Learn How to Paint Dewdrops
Dewdrops are seen In the morning, if the air is still, as moisture will condense on cooled surfaces and form into droplets.
Study other artists' work for inspiration.. Click here for a site with inspiring photography of dewdrops. You will notice how the light source is consistent for each drop on a petal. The direction of the light source should be the same on all objects throughout each outdoor painting. When sketching a landscape, before starting to paint, it is important to indicate the source of light and how it hits each element in the landscape.

The Four Steps in Learning How to Paint Dewdrops
The following suggestions are for oil or acrylic paint.
See the sites listed below for more ideas and also for watercolor. painting.
The demo was painted with a a darker shade of the base color of the main object for the shadow areas and a lighter shade of the base color for the absorbed light area. White was applied for the highlight.
Before starting to paint, an oval was lightly drawn with a pencil and the direction of the light source was determined.
Procedure:
1. A narrow cast shadow outside of the oval which is opposite the light source.
2. A crescent-shaped shadow area where the light enters the dewdrop, the
shadow area being about 1/3 the size of the drop with a very soft edge.
3. The absorbed light area opposite the source of light also crescent shaped
with a soft edge.
4. A white hightlight where the light hits the dewdrop.

How Do Dewdrops Form?
We only see dew in the morning because of the way dew forms. For dew to
form, air must be cooled to its condensation point. There must be little
movement to the air or it will remain mixed and not form dew, but will form
fog instead. (Fog is formed in other ways as well). These conditions usually
occur overnight, when the winds die down, and the air becomes still.
Radiational cooling from the ground or structures near the surface, such as
automobiles, mailboxes, etc. cools the air in contact with the ground or
structures. The humidity in the air condenses into droplets of moisture we
call dew.
