Painting Tips - Ocean Scenes

A lens on ocean painting with a list of online painting instruction sites and You Tube demos.

Lighting and movement are first considerations when becoming familiar with the action of the water. Make several sketches to
determine light and dark areas and to indicate the action of waves.

Below are listed links to several online demos on ocean painting.

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

Instructions - The Lighthouse Scene

The approach used in this particular painting to indicate the ocean. See the list of sites listed below for further instruction on painting oceans and waves.

This is one suggestion for painting the ocean in a lighthouse painting - How I painted this scene. You will develop your own style when studying the suggestions in the websites below. I used the colors which were used in the sky.

Sky colors:
Mix 1 - Cerulean Blue, White, and a touch of Payne's Gray.
When using acrylic paints, a retarding medium manufactured to be used with
your choice of acrylics can be added to slow down the drying time.
Working down toward the horizon, more white was added along with a touch of Cadmium Red Medium.

Ocean colors:
A touch of Cadmium Red Medium was added to Mix 1 to darken the ocean color.
While the paint was still wet, Mix 1 was then blended into the ocean coming forward. Small horiizontal strokes of white were used to indicate small waves which appear larger as they come nearer, as further objects appear smaller when drawn in perspective.

Quoting from the article:
"No matter what type of paint you are using to paint an ocean, the steps are the same. This article will explain steps using acrylic paint.
Step 3 - - - -
- - - - Try mixing some blues with white paint on whatever you are using as a palette to get a feel for the color possibilities. Don't forget to add some green to some of the blues, and mix with white. While doing this, picture shades of colors you have seen while at a beach. The shades ranges from . . . . . . . . . "

And, quoting from Step 5
"The ocean is not perfect.Select a lighter shade that you have created, or one straight from the tube, and spread on your palette. Apply this shade from the center of your work toward , , , , , , , , and notice how it begins to look like salt water"
