How to Paint Rocks in Landscape Paintings - Painting on Rocks - Rocks for the Home - Rock Jewelry

There are many styles of painting and each artist learning how to paint develops an individual approach. This demo teaches how to paint rocks in a landscape along with links to other web sites with other artists' online instruction Rocks can add interest to a landscape scene and can also be used in the perspective of the painting by varying the size and color as they recede into the background, giving a feeling of distance

___________________________________________________________________

Planing your painting: After the art supplies have been chosen, whether oil, acrylic or other, the initial sketch of a landscape painting which indicates the center of interest should also include details of the foreground of the picture. Unless the foreground is the main subject of the picture, it should not be so distinct as to take away from the painting's main focal point.

Foreground objects, such as rocks, appear larger as they come forward which adds to the sense of distance in the landscape. The colors are rich and warm, where receding colors appear bluish and somewhat gray in the distance. Therefore, the lightest lights and the darkest darks are used in foregrounds but care should be taken that the foreground features do not dominate the subject matter and take away from the center of interest, thereby allowing the eye to be brought into the picture..

How to Paint Rocks in Landscape Paintings

Painting Rocks - Instruction

Below are listed several links to other artist's methods for this subject
matter.

My procedure for the foreground rocks in this particular inspirational painting are as follows:

Palette: Burnt Umber, White, Yellow Ochre, Ultramarine Blue
(Note: I used acrylic paints for this painting and so I added a paint retarder made specifically for acrylic artist paints to allow time for blending the colors.)

Basic Color Mix: Equal parts of Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Whtie,

Color Mix: A mix of the three basic colors. was made.

Step 1 - A very thin wash of the Color Mix was applied over the rock and allowed to dry.
Step 2 - Burnt Umber was painted on the shadow side of the rock. A small amount of Ultramarine Blue was touched in a the very base.
Step 3 - While the paint was still wet, I painted the light side of the rock with the Color Mix and blended where the two colors meet.
Step 4 - (How to dry brush: Dip the brush in paint and wipe the paint out of the brush. Just a small amount of the paint will remain on the brush to be scumbled on the canvas.) When the paint in Step 3 was dry, a very light mix of white and the Color Mix were brushed on only where the sun might hit the rock.
