Paleo Popular Food Substitutes

Looks tasty doesn't it, that pizza on the left. And what is not to love about a pizza, maybe with a side of french fries and ice cream to finish? Everybody likes that!

But these dishes are full of wheat, grains, dairy and sugar and when you're on a Paleo diet you want to avoid these things. Should that mean you can't have them anymore? Of course not!

By changing some ingredients around and by being a little bit inventive you can still enjoy these popular foods and keep to your Paleo lifestyle. And this lens is all about how you can prepare these dishes Paleo style.

Paleo Pizza

When it comes to pizza the biggest thing you have to worry about is the crust. Originally its main ingredient is flower from either wheat or grains, but for the Paleo version you could go with either flower made from nuts or from coconuts.

Over at the Paleo Oh My Goodness blog Julie Bauer has a pizza recipe where the crust is made with coconout flower and it has a topping of pumpkin, apple and bacon.

In the video below Darren McDuffie prepares a pizza from a recipe he found on Mark's Daily Apple where the crust is made from almond flower.

The best thing about making your own pizza though is that you can go wild with your toppings. It may be like the recipes above, but you can put everything you want on a pizza!

Paleo Ice cream

There's a little bit of a discussion going on if dairy products should be part of a Paleo diet. When it comes to regular ice cream the use of large amount of sugars make it non-Paleo.

You could avoid this all by using coconut milk, such as in this recipe for coconut vanilla ice cream on the Paleo Diet Lifestyle blog. The best thing about this recipe is that it gives you tips on how to make this icecream without the use of an ice cream machine. However, this is much more time absorbing and if you like your ice cream a machine is a great investment without breaking the bank.

Paleo Meatloaf

Most traditional meatloaf recipes contain wheat or grain flower. In order to enjoy meatloaf while living a Paleo lifestyle you should omit that. This meatloaf recipe uses a bit of almond flower in stead of regular flower and gives you a great tasting dish.

Paleo French fries

As with dairy, there's also a bit of disagreement if potatoes are part of a Paleo diet. When it comes to french fries however it's the fact that they are friend in frying oil which ads to its overall unhealthiness. This is easily fixed.

By putting the fries into an oven you can still enjoy french fries without the disadvantages of fried food. Ad some herb like rosemary for some extra flavor or maybe some chili powder for a little zing.

As you can see in the video below, you can also use butternut squash as your main ingredient for your fries.
