Paleolithic people that lived inland had a high consumptions of wild animals. In both areas diets consisted of fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, raw meat, raw fish, nuts, seeds, eggs and edible leaves. Cavemen did not eat grains or dairy products. Many wheat, grains and potatoes are inedible raw. Uncooked they contained toxins. Animals were wild cows and goat provide milk and had not been domesticated. Therefore, dairy was not eaten during the Paleolithic Period. The only sweetener was natural honey, agave nectar and stevia. No agriculture, land was not cultivated for growing crops. Sweeteners in Paleo Diet
Sweeteners for Cooking Baking No Processed Sugar
Stevia is now claimed 100% friendly Paleo sweetener. A green leafy herbal plant grown in North and South America. Species of the sunflower family. The leaf of certain species over 30% times more sweetness than table sugar. Scientific claims, has a negative effect on blood glucose.Any medical benefit should be reviewed with a medical professional. No medical uses unless recommended by medical professional. Known as sugarleaf, sweetleaf and sweet leaf. For centuries used as sweetener in Japan, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil. In centuries passed used for culinary and medicinal purposes. In 1971 Morita Kagaku Kogyo, a Japanese company produced the first commercial sweetener for table use. Stevia large percentage of sweetener market in Japan. Note: U.S. in 1990s required that stevia be labeled as dietary supplement. In 2008 U.S. approved rebaudioside A extract as food additive. Confusing, stevia is a natural herb but I am not a scientist Many Paleo recipes use agave nectar or raw honey in recipes. Agave nectar and raw honey are not 100% Paleo if allowed at all in diet. Never the less agave and honey are used. I personally prefer agave or honey. Controverial, that Cavemen only ate stevia and not natural agave or raw honey. Recipes using these ingredients are modified Paleo Recipes but generally only small amounts are used. Sweeteners used in recipes personal judgement.Wikipedia Stevia

Organic Foods vs. Natural Foods
Organic or Natural Produce, Eggs and Meats
Read Organic vs Natural You Maybe Surprised.Consumer assume the the terms "organic" and "natural" are interchangeable. This is not true. Organic food production are managed by the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of 1990. Ecological balance is encouraged. Animal feed 95% organic ingredients. Natural Foods:When they read the label "Natural" foods you assume foods free of pesticides and preservatives. This is not the Case. There are no standards or jurisdictions for"Natural" in the United States.
Food & Agriculture Organization Codex Alimentarius have standards for organic foods but not for natural foods. Food and Drug Administration does not have standard rules for "natural foods". The FDA discourages the term being used by the food industry but we well know "natural" is commonly used. To insure pesticide, herbicide and or antibiotic free foods I would suggest purchasing organic foods.
Eggs and Chickens
Free Range Chickens: Free range chickens roam freely and not cages.
Organic Chickens & Organic Eggs: Are not feed antibiotic, artificial foods, preservatives or hormones. They are not exposed to any pesticides or herbicides
Natural Eggs: Consumer assume when they read the label and it says, "Natural" foods are free of pesticides and preservatives. This is not the Case. There are no standards or jurisdictions for"Natural" in the United States.
Commercial Chickens & Commercial Eggs: Allowed to be raised in cages and can be feed antibiotic, artificial foods, preservatives and hormones. Caged chicken tended to be living in cramped, unhealthy and uncomfortable conditions. Commercial chickens can be exposed to pesticides and herbicides.
The Healthiest Chickens and Eggs are Free-Range & Organic.
Organic vs. Natural Meats:
The USDA allow fresh meat labeled "Natural" if no artificial flavoring or ingredients or preservatives, BUT "Natural" meats have no third-party USDA verification. Meat labeled "Certified Organic" USDA animal comes from verified system history information and breeding history, animal health care and type of feed.
Criteria for certification:
- Certified pasture animal born and raised
- Never given Antibiotics
- Never given Growth-Hormones
- Only certified organic grasses or grains
- Unrestricted outdoor access (roam freely)
In organic cattle there are two types of foods given.
Grass-Fed: Cattle eats certified organic grass until time of slaughter. Grass-fed cattle are inclined to be leaner than grain-fed cattle.
Grain-Fed: Keeping to rules of USDA all grains must be certified organic and the cattle is inclined to have higher percentage of fat.
Consumers concerns about commercial foods organic foods are being purchased at increasing levels.
The question arises What The Heck are we Eating? Read the labels optimally it is best to eat organic. Cooking 100% organic is costly and tough in this economy. Realistically, cut down or eliminate fast foods, if possible purchase organic produce, milks, flours and oils. When possible purchase organic meats the next best thing would be natural meats. Paleo Style cooking encourages fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meat, eggs, herbs, unsaturated oils and spices.
Stone-Age Diet
Stone-Age Cookware
Cavemen only technology was the stone. Stones were used for tool making. Materials used were bones, wood, sea shells and other stones. Stones can be used for chipping and carving. The Paleolithic period is before the Neolithic period. Therefore, man had not settled in one location. Cavemen were hunters-gatherers always looking for food. Wild animals that were captured were eaten raw and animal skins were used for clothing and shelter. Fire had not been discovered and there was no cookware or utensils. Paleo Recipe Quiz
