Palm Centro offers low cost smartphone
PalmOS powered Centro banks on growing consumer appeal for smartphones
Palm has unveiled its $99.99 Centro smartphone that aims to bring the Treo's functionalities to the consumer segment.
The company cited market data from IDC claiming that the smartphone market is shifting from a professional to a consumer audience.
IDC projects that 13.8 million smartphones will ship this year, increasing to 74.4 million by 2011.
The Palm Centro features a touchscreen and keyboard, as well as a built-in camera and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Whereas the Treo comes in 'business grey', the Centro will ship in the more 'consumer-friendly' colours of black and ruby red.
The phone runs the PalmOS operating system. Surfing the web and mobile sites is enabled by a special mobile browser, but requires a special data subscription.
Similar to its Treo cousin, users can set up the Centro for push email for corporate messages, allowing email to be delivered automatically to the handheld.
The smartphone has also been optimised to work with popular online email services such as Gmail and Yahoo Mail.
The Centro is available in the US through Sprint. Palm did not immediately return a request for information on international availability.
The $99.99 price tag marks an introductory price after $50 instant savings and a $100 mail-in-rebate for users subscribing to a data plan. The phone comes with a two-year subscription to Sprint's CDMA network.

Palm Shows Off $100 Centro Smart-phone
Boston (dbTechno) - Palm is taking a different direction with their next smart-phone as they have unveiled a $100 smart-phone named the Centro. The Centro is a huge step for Palm as they try to enter the mass-market and become the least-expensive smart-phone on the market today.
The Centro is going to be running on the same Palm operating system which is used by the Treo and will also have a color touch screen, full keyboard, as well as access to e-mail and web surfing.
The smart-phone is going to be an exclusive to Sprint for a period of 3 months. It will be available for $100 with a $100 mail-in-rebate when customers sign up for a two-year service agreement with a data acess plan above $25/month.
With the announcement, the Palm stock rose by $1.02 or 6.6% which is great news for the company.
With competition from Apple with their expensive iPhone as well as from Motorola with the Q and Nokia, Palm had to do something different and they have definitely done so.
It will be launching next month and should be a huge hit for Sprint and Palm.
NEW Palm® Centro smartphone is now available for pre-order for $99 at palm.com.
Features of the Palm® Centro smartphone
The Palm® Centro smartphone, available in Onyx Black and Ruby Red is sure to impress your friends and co-workers with its sleek design. While smaller than the Treo smartphone, The Palm Centro runs on the Palm OS and has many of the same features including a 1.3 megapixel camera with 2X zoom, MP3 player, access email (including Microsoft Outlook) on the go, surf the Web via the Blazer browser, connect wirelessly with Bluetooth, Google Maps and Sprint TV.

Palm OS
Palm OS (also known as Garnet OS) is an embedded operating system initially developed by U.S. Robotics' owned Palm Computing, Inc. for personal digital assistants (PDAs) in 1996. Palm OS is designed for ease of use with a touchscreen-based graphical user interface. It is provided with a suite of basic applications for personal information management. Besides Palm, several other licensees have manufactured devices powered by Palm OS. The currently licensed version from ACCESS is now called Garnet OS, as the Palm trademark belongs to Palm, Inc.
