Pam Ayres - Comic Poet

Way back in the 1980s, back in New Zealand, my parents purchased a book of poems and a record LP of an English entertainer named Pam Ayres.

For some unknown reason, today she just popped into my brain. I havent heard or seen anything about her for many years. Certainly not since 1985. So I decided to find out what she was up and if she was even still alive. Thank goodness for the Internet.

Anyway, YES - Pam Ayres is still alive and she is still writing and recording poems. So I thought I would make this lens so I can introduce you to her funny poems and monologues and so that we don't forget her.

They Should Have Asked my Husband

As I was making this lens, I was doing some research on Youtube and found this poem. This is the first time I have ever heard this poem. Pam has not changed a bit - except for getting older. This seems to be a very popular poem. There is also one extra verse in the video that is NOT in the link. This link will take you to where you can read the words. I beleive this live theatre recording was performed in 2004.

Some of me poetry (and songs)

This is the book cover that I remember. I beleive it was originally published in 1976. Then a second volume of poems came out in 1978. The second one was called Some More of Me Poetry. The poems I remember are as follows

The Dolly On The Dustcart
The Spot Welder's Dream
The Secretary's Song
I Am A Cunning Vending Machine
How I Loved You Ethel Preedy
The Husband's Lament
Puddings - A Slice Of Nostalgia
Peeping Tom - Trad. Arr. - Pam Ayres
I Fell For A Black And White Minstrel
Henery My Son - Trad. Arr. - Pam Ayres
Little Lawrence Greenaway
Honey

Over the last 35 years, Pam has sold well over 2 million books. That is very good for a poet.

I Wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth

This video has 2 poems, neither of which I have ever heard before.

I wish I'd Looked After Me Teeth
and
The Voice At The Foot Of The Stairs

Pam Ayres is married and has 2 sons.

Pam Ayres Biography

Pam Ayres March 2010Pam Ayres was born and raised in Berkshire, England. After leaving school at age 15, she joined the civil service (what we called federal government) as a secretary and then later joined the women's air force - the WRAF I think. While she was in the WRAF, she discovered her love for entertaining and singing.

So she began by writing some poems and later began reading them at pubs and folk clubs around Oxfordshire. In 1974 Pam was invited to read on the local BBC station. That recording was aired nationally and was later chosen as a BBC Pick of the Year.

In the 1970s British TV had a talent show called Opportunity Knocks. (the fore runner of today's Britains Got Talent). In 1975 Pam appeared on Opportunity Knocks. In the years since, she has published 6 books of her original poems, made several recordings of her poems, toured England performing her one woman stage show, hosted her own show on TV and performed in front of Queen Elizabeth 2.

Pam's biography, called The Necessary Aptitude, is due to be released from Random House on October 1, 2011.

If you jump in fast, you can get a signed copy with NO P&P (that means free shipping) if you purchase before midnight GMT, September 14th, 2011. That is just 2 months from now - today being July 17, 2011.

Akaroa Cannon

And I have to show you this poem because its all about Akaroa - a small french village - just outside of Christchurch - in New Zealand. Are you shocked?? Yes this is the same Christchurch that has been severely damaged by earthquakes recently. (2010 and 2011) And NO - most kiwi children are NOT taught in school that the French did attempt to settle New Zealand first. I was certainly never told that in school.
