When you go south for weeks or months at a time, it's nice to get a vacation home rental that feels more like a home away from home. A condo or apartment that has kitchen facilities and where you don't feel like you're living in a hotel (not that that's a bad thing). But sometimes you want a holiday where you can bring your bucket of KFC home without having to sneak it past the hotel receptionist! Where you can throw your towels on the floor and not feel guilty that the maid is picking up after you.

That's why a lot of my parents' friends like to go the vacation rental by owner route. You're more likely to find a place that's not in some huge bunker-like hotel complex.
