Panasonic KX-TG6644B Review

Ranked #15,344 in Computers & Electronics, #307,372 overall

I replaced our ~5 year old Uniden cordless phone with something more modern the other day. The old Uniden still worked, but the batteries are pretty much gone, and there were some areas in the house where we noticed occational audio glitches, I'm guessing it's a range issue. Anyway, time for an upgrade... Here's what I got:

The Panasonic KX-TG6644B

Features I Like

Talking caller ID
This is one of those things that I didn't think this would be that useful at first (actually I thought it might be annoying), but it's awesome now that I've been using it. Basically, it takes whatever name is in the caller ID or phone book (phone book takes priority) and says it out loud. Now, I can be cooking in the kitchen, or laying down watching TV, and all I need to do is listen to find out who's calling, even before I get anywhere near the phone.

Call blocking
Awesome for those persistent robo-calls from telemarketers. I just save the number (which I can pick from the CID list) to the blocked call list, and the next time they call, they get a busy signal. Easy.

Call screen on the handsets
It's automatic, so I don't need to push a button every time like with the old Uniden. And the sound comes out through all handsets. Nice to have since I'm not usually next to the base.

Sounds clearer/better
Compared to our Uniden, the audio quality has improved greatly. It also has some equalizer settings, but honestly I haven't fiddled much with it yet since the stock settings are good enough for me. The equalizer might be useful to those that hear better at higher/lower frequencies.

Answering machine + voice mail support
I like the answering machine more since I can call-screen, but our phone company also has a free voice mail service. Now, I've setup voice mail to take calls when I'm using this cordless phone. When I hangup, I get an indicator that there is a VM, and I can easily get it with a push of a button. There is an orange blinking light on the phone indicating a message from either one.

Big display with white backlight
It's has a nice easy to read display. When idle, I have it showing the time/date in a big font on one of the handset that's always near me (great as a clock replacement). On the others, I have it displaying their nicknames as well (you can name each handset) in a smaller font.

Alarm clock
You can program each phone to have a separate alarm clock. I use a regular alarm clock to wake me up, and I use one of the handsets as a second alarm clock to remind me that it's about time that I head out the door.

Works in a power outage
As long as you leave a handset in the base, the handset apparently powers the base. I actually have an old wired phone I keep around just in case of power outages. Nice to know I can unplug the thing now.

Standard AAA batteries
No weird sizes, no weird connectors, no kidding. I can easily pop in some of those longer-lasting Eneloops when the stock gets worn out.

I got the 4-handset model, but it's also available with 1, 3 or 5-handsets and is expandable up to 6.
