What Makes a Great Digital Camera for Amateurs?

Many features should be considered when choosing the right digital camera.

  • Ease of use.
For amateurs it's important to have a lot of automated features to avoid having to make too many manual adjustments in order to get good pictures. Automatic focus, a number of scene modes, and so forth help make shooting simple but reliable. Of course having the option of adjusting the exposure settings and so forth can be a plus too.

  • A large, easy to view, color accurate display.
A good display can help in framing a picture well and allow for easy editing.

  • Optical image stabilization.
Image stabilization helps to eliminate blurry photographs. It can reduce the effects of unintentional camera movement and in some cases, motion blur when a subject moves.

  • Optical zoom.
Zoom allows you to get up close shots even at those times when you can't physically get near a subject.

  • Good resolution.
Yes you need a certain number of megapixels to get the detail and clarity you want in photos. Three may suffice when sharing photos on line, five is great for typically sized prints of 4x6 or 5x8 but seven or eight is good for larger prints.

  • A good lens.
Your lens is probably the most critical, and expensive part of your camera. A good Carl Zeiss or Leica lens is recommended. Ideally, a lens will give you the ability to take wide angle and telephoto type shots.

  • Speed.
Some digital cameras are slow. You may press the button and it make take a second or two for it to actually take the photo. Or, your camera may not be able to shoot a second photo for a second or two. This can result in a lot of missed photographs. Cameras that reduce this delay to .006 or so will be less frustrating to use.

  • Portability. Most amateurs want a camera that they can take everywhere. A camera small enough to fit in a pocket is often desirable.

  • Video functions. Some people want the flexibility of using their camera to take video as well. This way they don't always have to carry two devices!

This Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ3 is an outstanding compact, point and shoot camera. It's 7.2 megapixel CCD sensor provides the detail needed to create beautiful prints up to 15 x 20 inches. But megapixels aren't the only key to great photos, quality lenses are also a critical factor and this Lumix provides a great 28mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ3 helps assure that you can get the best possible shot no matter where you're standing. The 10x optical image stabilized zoom allows you to get close to your subject even when you can't step in any nearer, while also reducing any blur due to small camera movements. The wide angle lens on the other hand can assist in getting everything in the shot you want when standing close.

The TZ3's image stabilization function not only compensates for those small camera movements but can even reduce blur when your subject moves. The Intelligent Image Stabilization will automatically adjust the ISO and shutter speed settings for you as it determines the speed of movement and lighting conditions. This makes a near perfect shot easy.

    This digital camera also features:

  • Extended optical zoom for up to 15x magnification with 3 megapixel resolution
  • The ability to capture photos in three aspect ratios: 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9.
  • Direct Print for quick and easy printing

  • Improved noise reduction
  • ISO settings up to 1250 with full resolution (great for low light settings)
