Pancreatitis - Living with Pancreatitis
Ranked #649 in Healthy Living, #13,138 overall
Pancreatitis Is Not an Illness You Want to Take Lightly Because Pancreatitis Can Kill You or Cause Complications That Do ...
I was diagnosed in 1979 by David Langdon M.D, a gastroenterologist, and have been living with pancreatitis ever since. And ...
After gathering tons of information via research plus, which is probably more important, my own personal experience over the years, I decided it might be helpful to share what I have learned and so I created this page for people like me or those who may be looking for information for a friend, family member or because they themselves are having undiagnosed problems that might possibly be related to the pancreas and may even be the conditon we are going to talk about right here on this page.
If you suffer from mild to severe gasterointestinal symptoms (PAIN, nausea, vomiting) it's important to find out what is causing your distress because if it happens to be pancreatitis it is nothing to fool with. It can turn ugly, real fast with death coming, in some cases, in as little as 48 hrs without competent medical intervention, and, from my personal experience competent medical intervention is difficult to find and I finally, with a stroke from lady luck, found Dr. Langdon, who I am sure, saved my bacon.
The information you'll read on this page is not from someone who has simply read about the condition in order to gather the information necessary to write an article. This information is from someone who has been diagnosed with pancreatitis, lived with the condition for a long time (over 30 years) and found ways to adapt, improvise and overcome.
As you read through this site you will find information about symptoms, my experience with doctors along with what I think of most of them, the possible complications of the condition, the primary and secondary causes and you'll also discover what I have learned through experience about such things as diet (what to eat, what not to eat, when to eat, when not to eat), the alternative, home remedies, supplements and I guess what you could call an absolute mandatory regimen I live by in order to make living with pancreatitis a lot easier and I think safer, with less possiblity of horrific complications.
So sit back, relax, grab a cup of joe to enjoy while you and I explore the in's and out's of living with pancreatitis.
Important Note: Read everything on this page. If you need to leave, bookmark the page or better yet email the link to yourself and place it in a folder named "Living With Pancreatitis" so that you can easily find it. The reason you'll want to do that is because I seriously doubt you will find this kind of indepth, from-the-horses-mouth kind of information about living with pancreatitis anywhere else on the net.
What Can Cause Pancreatitis?
The two most common causes of pancreatitis are gallstones due to the passing of gallstones which become lodged in the pancreatic or common bile duct and alcohol consumption: Alcoholic Pancreatitis.Traumatic abdominal Injury, sustained from something such as a car wreck, bad fall, gunshot wound or a 200 pound full back slamming into your gut at full speed, is also a known cause of pancreatitis.
Cancer of the pancreas often causes pancreatitis.
Other causes include:
1) autoimmune disease (autoimmune pancreatitis),
2) genes (hereditary pancreatitis),
3) medications such as Byetta (See video 3),
4) exposure to certain chemicals,
5) surgery and certain medical proceedures such as ERCP,
6) infections like mumps,
7) high blood fat levels and
8) pancreatic abnormalities such as pancreas divisum.
I imagine there are other factors for causation as well.

If You Have Been Diagnosed With Pancreatitis ...
A war is comprized of what?
Battles.
You need to win the battles in order to win the war. So think like a warrior by realizing ...
"Every battle is won before it is fought" - Sun Tzu, The Art of War.
Pancreatitis Can Be Difficult to Diagnose ...
For several reasons
One of those reasons is simply that when it comes to pancreatitis doctors can be dummer than bags of barber hair or seem to be because they don't listen. They are in to big a hurry to see their next patient, are thinking about their golf tee time or simply don't give a shit because it isn't them who is in agony.Another reason is that they THINK they are omnipotent, know your body, its symptoms (what you are experiencing) a lot better than you do and if you beg to differ they simply chalk you up as a hypochondriac or a lonely person in need of attention. Yet ...
Another reason is that many doctors have difficulty diagnosing anything unless it slaps them in the face (CT scan showing horrendous damage due to necrotizing pancreatitis or cysts the size of watermelons). Horrendous damage and internal bleeding helps them arrive at a diagnosis of pancreatitis but if you don't have those types of complications yet, and trust me on this, you don't want those easy to read signs but ...
You have moderate to severe gastrointestinal symptoms and have yet to have a doctor give you a correct, common sense diagonsis make sure you persevere in finding a gastroenterologist who received his/her degree from somewhere other than a Cracker Jack box, is able to recall what they learned in medical school and use common sense (you know - if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, looks like a duck it most likely isn't a damn frog right?) along with the modern diagnostic tools. I know I am asking a lot because ...
Finding a good doctor with great diagnostic skills is like locating a huge placer gold deposit but I know there are at least one in 14 (7%) who have brains, and diagnostic ability (know how to read tests and have common sense). In fact here's one who wrote an article about Chronic Pancreatitis and Current Problems of Diagnostic Criteria
Just make sure you don't give up and the sooner you get diagnosed the better because there is evidence that the damage from both acute and chronic pancreatitis is reversable IF it is diagnosed early enough and YOU take appropriate measures to insure that the fire of inflammation in YOUR pancreas is completely put out and the tissue allowed to heal.
I wish you good luck.
My Pancreatitis Story
It just may help someone else who is suffering from pancreatitis
IF my pancreatitis was caused due to a football injury it is basically my fault I have the condition because I should have kept my head lower when charging towards that 200 pound fullback. I made what has turned out to be a very serious mistake.I was playing center linebacker for my highschool team when the injury happened. He came through the line, head lower than mine, (dummy me) and when we hit his helmet smashed into my gut. He was about 200 pounds of meat smashing into my 180 at full bore. He tagged me just below the rib cage, center mass. It felt great. Like I said it was my own dumb fault.
I sat out the rest of the game and my folks took me to the family doctor. He had me lay flat on my back, put his hand on my abdomen and asked me to do a sit up. I couldn't. He figured the contact had torn my abdominal muscles and told my folks that I was to sit on the bench the rest of the season. I started having some problems soon after. Heartburn and nausea.
Obviously our family doctor forgot about the fact I'd been nailed in the gut by 200 pounds of charging meat and when I kept complaining of heart burn and nausea he thought I may have an ulcer. That led to my first upper GI test. Barium is so yummy I enjoyed it emensely. The stuff tasted like a thick, white shit malt. My GI tract was clear. So the doc scheduled me for the old dye test for gallbladder disease. I guess teens can have gallstones; however, my gall bladder worked fine with no sign of gall stones. So when tests didn't show any reason for my symptoms of course I was then a "head case" with possible hypocondria tendencies. Here's the funny part ...
The symptoms simply disappeared.
After several months of feelings like crap, bouts of nausea for as long as 2 weeks at a stretch and heart burn that started in my gut and traveled all the way to the tip of my tongue, those symptoms simply vanished. I was fine. Hey, I was damn glad they were gone. I didn't miss them, the doc or the medical tests one bit.
I graduated from high school and enlisted in the Marine Corps. Towards the end of my last tour of duty I started getting sick. This time I experienced heartburn, nausea and pain. The pain would start center mass and bore into my back or visa versa. It was really weird to have it start in the middle of my back and bore through the front. That had me worried. I went to sickbay. I was stationed at a small Marine Barracks outside a little Nevada town. The Corpsman couldn't determine what was wrong and figured whatever it may be was beyond his paygrade so he scheduled a visit to Oakland Naval Hospital. I felt good about the appointment because military doctors are usually good, they have to be to save lives in war time trauma situations. I was looking forward to a resolution of my problem.
While at the hospital I was subjected to another upper GI, more blood work, saw a Naval Doctor, and was sent back to duty with a prescription for Librax. The Librax took the nausea away, which was a great thing because I hate to puke, but it did nothing for the pain. Come to find out later (after my enlistment and an honorable discharge) that Naval doc thought it was all in my head (tests showed nothing) and he put that in my SRB! I found out when applying for life insurance. I was told that my SRB showed a possible mental disorder! I was so frickin' pissed off I could have shot that doc. Dumb bastard. If I had stayed in the Corps that little bit of info in my SRB could have seriously damaged my career as a Marine. After about 30 days of off and on sickness the symptoms again disappeared. What a relief to feel normal again.
Then in the late 70's the symptoms came back and this time with a vengence. I visited the ER 7 times. 7 ER visits and none of those people could figure out what the problem was. I was beginning to dislike doctors and understood why their business is called a practice. I had one doctor, who was a digestive disease specialist tell me, after a whole 5 minutes of the first and last appointment, that he thought I was to young for a serious problem and was sure I had a spastic colon.
In the late 1970's I of course did not have a computer or access to quick information online so I spent a lot of time in the library reading about diseases and symptoms. I found that gall bladder disease can present with similar symptoms and of course passing stones can be quite painful but there are some key differences in symptoms and causes of symptoms. For example ...
Alcohol doesn't effect the gall bladder but will cause major pain with pancreatitis. The pain is usually more severe with pancreatitis and for me, in most cases, comes on suddenly, but, it can also have a gradual build up. A telltale symptom of pain starting in front and boring into the back or visa-versa is a typical pancreatitis presentation. I've experienced severe pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, sweating, difficulty breathing, swollen abdomen, rapid heart beat and other symptoms. One symptom I had when I was real bad years ago (before I found grape seed extract and curcumin) was that I could not stand something, like an arm or hand, laying on my abdomen. It would make me nauseous and cause pain. At times motion (driving the car, running) would make me sick and I had never experienced motion sickness of any kind before even on board ship in heavy seas. Anyway ...
Like I mentioned at the beginning of this page I finally found a really good doctor who not only reordered tests I had done previously but also ordered new tests, some of which he did himself like sticking a scope down my throat so he could view my bile ducts, etc ... and then he actually gave me 2 drugs while in his office that caused me to have an attack. He then drew blood every 30 minutes for approximately 3 hours when my enzyme levels suddenly spiked. I guess that was all he needed to confirm his suspicions. He again asked me how many times this had happened and I told him again of the 7 ER visits and that those were just the really horrible attacks and he calmly mentioned I was lucky I wasn't dead. Then ...
We had our little "prepare for the worst" chat and that's when he told me he was quite sure I had been having acute pancreatic attacks and that I'd most probably continue to have chronic problems. He went on to say that within 10 years I'd probably be looking at a pancreatic transplant because my pancreas would cease to function, I wouldn't be able to eat and that the success of pancreatic transplants at that time wasn't the best. In other words I think he was trying tell me that within 10 years I might be dead.
I had finally found a great doctor. This guy was not only one intelligent dude but he was one of those rare docs that really cares more about finding the problem and an appropriate solution than about how many patients he could run through his office on a daily basis. He spent a lot of time with me and worked diligently to find out the problem. Maybe it was because he was an Army doctor before private practice and he knew I was a Marine and I didn't strike him as a pansy. What I do know is that he told me no more alcohol. None. And he prescribed some drugs and told me exactly why he was prescribing them. One drug, robinul was to help slow down the digestive process, another compazine was for nausea and demerol for pain.
The demerol didn't help. It didn't even take the edge off. One night while I was in massive pain I was going through the medicine cabinet when I discovered my wife's Motrin. BIG pills. It said take for pain. I was in PAIN so I popped one of those horse pills. In 30 minutes or so my pain started to subside and was gone in less than an hour. I was one happy guy. I told Dr. Langdon about the pills. He told me they were an anti-inflammatory and as long as they worked he sure didn't have a problem with prescribing them. In fact, he was a little upset that he hadn't prescribed an anti-inflammatory before since pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. Cool! Things were looking up! I had pills that would slow down my gut and relax it, pills for nausea and pills that actually took the pain away without the chance of becoming addicted to opiates like morphine.
Now it was time to figure out how to heal and beat the 10 year time period.
I did hordes of research after my diagnosis. My research led me to completely eliminate red meat, pork, mayo, butter, cream, and everything else with high fat content from my diet. In other words I was on a diet of fish, poultry (chicken and turkey), fruit, vegetables, legumes and whole grain products. I also started taking vitamins and minerals to enable me to get enough nutrients absorbed because one of the problems or complications that arises from pancreatitis is called malabsorption. Basically that means you don't absorb nutrients from food like you should. I started taking a multiple vitamin-mineral formula.
Years later I found research on OPC's (pycnogenol and grape seed) and curcumin (turmeric). The virtues of the two sounded to good to be true but hey I gave it a shot. I started taking vitamin C, grape seed and turmeric. Then, after 6 months of no problems (no pain or other symptoms), to "test" the benefits of Vit C, grape seed extract and turmeric I stopped taking my meds. 6 months later I was still in a "no problem zone." The diet and supplements were definitely working. However ...
I didn't know what portion of my program was important so I tried eating red meat. After a few of days of steak, roast and hamburger I was sick as a dog. So that meant the diet was damn important. Once I was symptom free again I eliminated the grape seed and turmeric. Soon I was sick again. Being a right smart feller I figured that meant that BOTH the strict, low, low fat diet and the Vit C, Grape seed and turmeric were a necessary course of action unless I wanted to be in pain and puking.
The bottom line? 30 years after my diagnosis I'm still alive and can still eat..

Pancreatitis Cure
Is there a Pancreatitis Cure?
I'm not gonna lie to you.
There is no cure for Pancreatitis; However, my research is leading me to suspect (not believe yet) there may be hope of possible pancreatic tissue regeneration. If regeneration does exist within the ability of pancreatic tissue then it would be common sense that dictates the immediate course of action should be, when acute pancreatitis strikes, to ...
Not simply relieve pain with narcotic drugs but to actually STOP the Acute Pancreatitis episode in its tracks as soon as possible in order to prevent catstrophic damage and of course possible death due to shock, necrosis, infection, or organ failure. And the less damage, the easier it will be for the pancreas to regenerate if there is that tissue regeneration capability.
On this site you will find a section that deals with the potential possibilty of pancreatic tissue regeneration. There is NO concrete evidence, as of yet, that regeneration is a possibilty.
There are only slight, ambiguous clues.
I don't want to get all religiousy here but IF you believe in God and His Creation wouldn't one wonder if He created man in His image (Bible states we were created in His image) and His image being perfect, that there would be some form of regeneration potential incase of damage?
It is food for thought don't you agree?
So as I find any research that may lead me to suspect or lean towards belief of potential renegeration of pancreatic tissue I'll post that information within the section of this site pertaining to the regeneration of pancreatic tissue.
Don't get your hopes up. However ...
IF there is any possibiltiy of regeneration I am sure it would only happen IF the pancreas was NOT inflamed by alcohol or diet and the inflammation completely resolved in some way.
My Regimen Stops Pancreatitis Pain in ...
Time is of the essense to prevent damage and avoid the Grim Reaper!
Here are The 4 Steps that Work for Me
Be advised: I do this, my regimen, without medical consent. NOTHING I do is according to medical protocol. I am not suggesting, prescribing or directing you to do what I do. I am simply relaying information. If you use any of my information, you do so entirely at your own risk. It is always prudent to seek competent medical advise from a licesened physcian before using any alternative or home remedy of any kind. This information is NOT approved by the FDA or anyone else.
Am I crystal clear on that point?
If you try my regimen
Something else I want you to know. I make a buck or two if you purchase products from this site and I'll appreciate the income but here's what you should really do if you are currently in pain due to chronic pancreatitis and decide to try what works for me:
Go to your local health store and purchase at least your first monthly batch of supplements. Why wait 10 days for delivery when you can be using them today and possibly receiving benefit before an order would even arrive? Just make sure you buy quality vitamin C (with bioflavonoids), grape seed extract (with nothing else in it but maybe vitamin C and/or maritime pine bark) and curcumin extract (with nothing else in it).
What to look for
A lot of times supplement manufacturers will package grape seed extract with a bunch of other nutrients, you do NOT want that. They often put grapeseed with stuff that can be toxic at high doses. All you want is pure grape seed or grapeseed coupled with C or maritime pine bark is actually a good thing (but nothing else) and pure curcumin. Make sure that the grapeseed contains at least 85% proanthocyandins and the curcumin is 95% curcuminoid.
Grape Seed Extract
Super antioxidant
Twinlab Grape Seed Extract 100mg, 60 Capsules
Amazon Price: $17.67 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Grape seed extract is one powerful OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidin). OPC's are flavonols. Very powerful flavonols. Grapeseed is more powerful than both vitamin C and E when it comes to fighting free radicals and oxidation. How it works to protect the pancreas I have no clue. I can guess but it would be only a guess. All I know is that without it and other supplements I get sick.
If you have pancreatitis I strongly urge you to try grapeseed extract.
How to use: I can NOT prescribe. I am not a doctor but I take it twice per day 100mgs per dose. That is more than I need to take to hit the optimum levels of saturation which is one milligarm per pound of body weight. However, IF I start to feel ill I take MORE. Most people tolerate up to 450mgs per day without problems. It is best to start out slow and increase the dosage until you find relief. Note: Be aware grape seed can cause flu-like symptoms in some people because of the extreme cleansing action until the toxins have been cleansed from your body.
What About Children with Pancreatitis Pain?
I had found what worked for me, out of desperation and the need to stop the pain and potential damage.
When I was diagnosed I was not able to simply slam some key words or phrases into a google search and get information. I had to really dig for it and the information at that time was rare indeed. None of it even hinted that children were potential victims, I mean what 6 year old gets gallstones or becomes and alcoholic?
I guess traumatic abdominal injury was a possible threat but there was no information regarding pancreatitis in children or it being caused by high blood fats etc ...
Hell, very few doctors could even recognize the symptoms and diagnose the condition - period! And I doubt the diagnostic skills have increased much but the information and research surely has and some the information I have come across (blogs and stuff) on the Net while searching for new research to add to this lens is not only very wrong but deadly. I'm serious about the bad info thing. And it is no wonder those people are still sick, in pain and suffering from pancreatitis. But ...
If I had a child with Pancreatitis here is what I would do: Stopping Pancreatitis Pain in Children
It is simply common sense again to eliminate the fire of inflammation as quickly as possible and keep the fire out. So in children as in adults, in my opinion (and that is all it is - my opinion), is to stop the pain as fast as possible and keep it from returning just as you would in an adult.
Pain siganls inflammation and impending damage. Masking the pain with morphine or other opiates is not the same as stopping the problem which is inflammation. I always want to eliminate the problem, the source and reason for the pain. The faster you accomplish that task the less chance there is of catastrophic damage.

- I love you! Your shoot from the hip presentation is refreshing, and I don't put much trust in Dr's either, other than for diagnosing. I feel blessed to have found you!
I had my 1st bout (that I know of) with pancreatitis last month. I was in severe pain for over a month, before I went to ER. CT scan & ultra sound showed I had a gall stone lodged in a duct.
I refused to allow them to remove my gall bladder because Gallstones can form anywhere along the biliary tract where bile is present, it's not always a faulty gall bladder ... I have had it for 61 yrs, I've grown fond of it! Their "just in case" rational was not justification enough for me to be sliced & diced. It pissed off the dr & he stormed out of the room screaming about how stubborn I am.
I did my usual turn to natural healing. Researching remedies led me to do the castor oil pack 3 days a week. (http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/castor_oil.html), I began sleeping on a healing magnet pad and holding a magnetic pad on my tummy when setting watching TV, drinking a lot of magnetized water & twice a day I drink 2 oz ea of Noni, Goji & aloe vera juice.. So far no pain and I have so much energy, even my diabetic nerve damage tingling & pain is gone!
I am going to do your 6 month vegan suggestion. I'm not sure I can do without my midnight snack of Greek yogurt & a chunk of cheese......... sigh ...........
I also read that coconut is wonderful for digestion as well as healing, and that coconut butter is a tasty, healthy butter replacement, has anyone on here tried it? That's on my todo list along with grape seed, Curcumin and a juicer for the vegan thingie when I find the best value @ the cheapest price.
BTW Swansonvitamins.com is the best source I have found for suppliments, cheapest too, I found them while searching for pancreatitis remedies, they have a huge selection of natural stuff! (No, I don't work for them) I'm just passing on info from one frugal peep to another.
Thanks from the bottom of my emaciated pancreas for you and your knowledge, for caring enough to create this site to share your info & bring us sick-o's together to share info.

Information on Supplements for Pancreatitis
Read this info like your life depends upon it because it does!
There is very little research on supplements for pancreatitis. Most of what I have learned has been by trial and error but I did find out about supplements and what they might be capable of accomplishing by doing a lot of reading and then trying them to see if they worked at all for me. Remember This About Pancreatitis ...
"I have heard that in war haste can be folly but have never seen delay that was wise." Sun Tzu
"Ultimate excellence lies not in winning every battle but in defeating the enemy without ever fighting" Sun Tzu
What do the above quotes mean?
To win the battle with pancreatitis you must take swift, decisive action, prevent acute pancreatitis attacks and potential, unrepairable pancreatic damage.
Your actions will determine the difference between life and death.
Curcumin
Antioxidants for chronic pancreatitis
Daily antioxidant supplementation appears to relieve pain and reduces oxidative stress in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Individuals with chronic pancreatitis may be deficient in antioxidants. Oxidative stress is an important mechanism of injury and inflammation of the pancreas in chronic pancreatitis.
Dr. Pramod K. Garg and colleagues from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi gave chronic pancreatitis patients daily doses of 600 ug organic selenium, 54o mg ascorbic acid, 9000 IU beta-carotene, 270 IU alpha-tocopherol and 2 g methionine. All patients were treated in the standard manner with analgesics on demand and pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. After 6 months, the reduction in the number of painful days per month was higher in the antioxidant group than the placebo group. One third of patients became pain free on treatment. Gastroenterology 2009.
It only took the medical community 14 years more than me to figure this stuff out (certain high potency antioxidants relieve pancreatitis pain) and frankly I'll bet grapeseed, curcumin and vit C work better and they are non-toxic. Selenium, even though proven to fight heart disease and cancer, in high doses becomes toxic causing a vast aray of problems and large doses of methionine will immediately raise blood plasma levels of homocysteine which irritates artery walls, causing damage and the resulting arterial plaque known as atherosclerosis but ...
That's the medical community for you. If there is a way to do something well, non-toxically, they will choose the toxic way every time!
I'll stay with vitamin C, grape seed extract and curcumin all of which are non-toxic.
Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95, 500mg, 120 Capsules
Amazon Price: $21.43 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Newer research actually shows that curcumin helps stop pancreatitis attacks and inhibits the progression of the condition. I take it. It works. That's good enough for me. Grape seed extraxt and curcumin should be a daily ritual that occurs 2 - 3 times per day until you have had 6 months free of symptoms when maintenance dose should be sufficient.

Pancreas Regeneration - Is It Possible?

I am now looking into research as to whether or not there is any possibility that a pancreas damaged by pancreatitis can regenerate in some way. As I find information I will post in this module.
If there is a chance of the pancreas regenerating it's own tissue, such as the liver has been know to accomplish, then it would only make common sense that it is extremely imperative to STOP an acute pancreatitis episode as quickly as possible in order to avoid tissue damage and thereby limiting the amount of pancreatic tissue that needs to be regenerated thus making it that much easier for the pancreas to regenerate.
If this is infact possible it may explain, or at least be a reasonable conclusion, as to WHY (after so many acute episodes) my CT scans are clean. And would also lead me to beleive it might just be possible (not saying it is a hopeful possibility) with the correct pancreatitis diet and protective supplement regimen the pancreas may be able to regenerate its own tissue.
I am not saying you should get your hopes up or expect miracles but wouldn't that be frickin' exciting for people like us?

Caregiver tips
One that I wouldn't wish on anyone.
In fact, because I was so sick at first and I was told by the only doctor who was able to diagnose my condition that I most likely did NOT have a future and since my wife wanted to have children and I felt so uncertain about my life and it seemed to me very selfish to make her go through it (I had watched my mom go through my father's cancer and death), and to expect her to give up what she wanted in life ... Gallstones and Pancreatitis
A major cause of Pancreatitis is gallstones

One of the leading causes of Acute Pancreatitis and necrotizing pancreatitis is the gallstone or gallstones that obstruct the pancreatic duct. The victim goes from unpleasant pain, nausea and possible vomiting due to gallbladder disease to an actual life threatening situation called acute pancreatitis. Complications of Pancreatitis (part 1)
It is extremely important, if you have pancreatitis, to understand what you are really dealing with and how important it is for you to keep your pancreas as non-inflamed as possible in order to avoid serious complications that could result in your death. The more you do to help yourself the better off you are going to be because if you have mild acute or mild chronic pancreatitis it can get worse if you allow the problem to become uncontrolled because you don't do what you should do and the last thing you want is full-blown acute pancreatitis with complications.
So what kind of complications am I talking about?
There are some serious ones, ones that cause death such as:
1) Pancreatic cancer
2) Necrotizing pancreatitis (infection)
3) Organ failure (Kidney, Heart, Lungs, Liver)
4) Shock
Other complications include:
1) Pseudocysts
2) Breathing problems
3) Diabetes
4) Malnutrition
5) Acidosis
Food Choices for Pancreatitis
You try a small meal of chicken or fish (not pork, beef or lamb - just chicken or fish), preferably broiled or baked in such a manner that the meat sheds the fat and does NOT sit in the fat while cooking. No you can't bread or deep fat fry the damn chicken. Use your head. NO FAT. Listen to me cuz I have been there, done it. Don't pay attention to guys like the doctor in the video below because, if you noticed, subject of the video is "Healthy Food Choices for Pancreatitis" and as usual he is like most doctors I've met and didn't read the script, or listen to the director and gives absolutely no information of value on "Healthy Food Choices for Pancreatitis."
Complications of Pancreatitis (part 2)
Your Eating Habits and Food Choices Are ...
What Are Healthy Food Choices For Pancreatitis?
Listen Up! This is the real deal
In another section below and throughout this page on living with pancreatitis I have mentioned the foods you should avoid at all costs but I haven't really hit on the foods that are healthy choices or foods that you should eat (when you are hungry) that will help you maintain some semblance of health without putting your pancreas in an inflamed state or your life at risk any more than it already is.Once you "get it" and completely understand that your life is in your own hands and that fat in any form is your enemy it narrows down your food choices considerably. Saturated fat, animal fat, is the worst fat. Fatty, oily anything is not a good thing . And you know alcohol, in any form, is completely out right? So let's look at what you may somewhat safely eat.
It all Depends on Where You Are At ...
And I'm not talking about your global location.
First of all if you are just coming out of an attack my best advise is to live on water for 48 hours and then try some fruit juice and vegetable juice (V8). If you have a juicer great. Make your own vegetable juice. After your pancreas has "rested" for at least 3 days and you have encountered NO symptoms for 72, preferrably 96 hours, on juices then, if you are hungry (your belly feels like it is against your back bone hunger) try a small meal of brown rice and vegetables. I mean a SMALL meal, maybe half a cup.
If that goes well have another half a cup in an hour or two. Eat SMALL meals 5 - 6 times per day but if you begin to feel any symptoms STOP eating. And ...
Immediately take aspirin, grapeseed extract (capsules) and curcumin (capsules) to stop the inflammation. Then rest your pancreas as explained above. I suggest you take grapeseed extract (one mg per pound of body weight) daily along with 500mgs of curcumin and at least 1000mgs of Vit C. The grapeseed, curcumin and VitC should become a daily routine. They fight inflammation and help heal your pancreas. You can buy them all from any well stocked health food store. You'll also need digestive enzymes with pancreatin 4X. So get them while you are at the health store as well and take them 15 - 20 minutes before EVERY meal. They help take the load of producing digestive enymes off your pancreas.
If you are NOT hungry DO NOT eat.
Ok, foods that are usually safe and healthy are strict vegan:
1) Whole grains. Oat meal, wheat bread, rye bread, wheat germ, barley, brown rice, bulgar
2) Legumes. Beans (vegetarian), peas, lentils
3) Tubers. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, rudabegas
4) Leafy Greens. Spinach, lettuce, chard etc ...
5) Cruciferous Veggies. Brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli etc ...
6) Fruit. Tomatoes (yes tomatoes are fruit just don't put them in a fruit salad), apples, oranges, pomegranate, pineapple, mangos, papaya, etc..
If you cook your food do it in such a manner that you DO NOT need oil or fat of any kind. None, zip nada. NO oil. Got it?
Note: Avocados are fruit BUT they contain extremely high amounts of oily fats and should be avoided unless you feel extremely lucky or have been symptom free for over 6 months. If you eat avocado, eat a very small amount.
Once you have been on grapeseed extract, curcumin and VitC for 6 month and have had ZERO symptoms eating a strict vegan diet you can begin to try other foods - in SMALL quantities.
These other foods are:
1) Fat free or 1% milk
2) Fish (trout, tuna, salmon, mackerel, sardines or white fish like bass, perch, crappie)
3) Chicken and turkey (Broiled, boiled, or BBQ'd)
4) Eggs (soft boiled, hard boiled, poached)
5) Avacado, flax seed, nuts (very small amounts)
Remember: Cook everything WITHOUT oil or grease of any kind.
If you experience ANY unpleasant symptoms you know the drill right? Rest your pancreas and start again after 96 hours with the strict vegan regemin.

Go Vegan to Heal Your Pancreatitis Damaged Pancreas
While checking out various authors on Squidoo I found this lens about going vegan and thought it may be helpful.
Just remember that some vegans use dairy and all dairy contains to much fat for a damaged pancreas.
They allso cook with oil which is another no-no when trying to heal the pancreas. So ...
Keep in mind that NOT all vegan recipies will work for you because some do contain to much fat for a damaged pancreas but they do give you ideas to use in order to cook some tasty "should be safe" meals with some substitution or elimination of certain ingedients such as dairy products. Either substitute or cut out altogether those foods which contain fat, look like fat, smell like fat and most likely are fat from any vegan recipe and enjoy some good food.

Autoimmune Pancreatitis
Is it really idiopathic?

When a doctor can't think of and then confirm a reason for your pancreatitis (IF they recognize that you have pancreatitis) then you'll be classified as idiopathic in most cases; however, it is a well know fact that autoimmune diseases can and do cause acute pancreatitis. Those that have been directly linked to pancreatitis will be found in the links below. If you have pancreatitis and your doctor can't seem to discover the reason you may ask him or her if they have tested you for autoimmune diseases such as the ones mentioned below.

Supplements for Pancreatitis
These supplements help me ...
I take 200mg per day of grape seed and 500mg of curcumin (the extract from turmeric) as a maintainence dose and when I started I took 400 - 800mg of grape seed along with 500 - 1000mg of curcumin per day. Be advised that grapeseed extract can cause some side effects. Some people experience nausea and headache with the higher doses due to detoxification. If you experience them decrease the amount you take but TRY to take ONE mg per pound of body weight each day. If it works for you like it does me you'll notice you feel better in a few days and in time may heal.
Since the pancreas produces the enzymes needed to breakdown a meal I take digestive enzymes about 15 minutes before meals as well which seems to help possibly because it takes some of the load of producing enzymes off my pancreas.
I also take 2000mg of Vitamin C because vitamin C is a proven cancer fighter ( so are grapeseed and curcumin) along with being a very strong free radical fighter and it works hand in hand with the grapeseed to help protect my pancreas. Even with extra enzymes to help digest food someone with pancreatitis may also suffer from malabsorption which means that your small intestines don't absorb the necessary vitamins and minerals your body needs to stay healthy. This of course means it is important to supplement with a quality multi-vitamin and mineral formulation.
And ...
This is important, not all vitamin formulations are good.
When buying multiple vitamin-minerals formulations, look for quality (real natural vitamins, not synthetic) not price. Stay away from the cheap crap you see advertised on TV. I won't mention any names but cheap one-a-days are useless. If you don't believe me call the sewage treatment facility in your town and ask what vitamins are found in the sewage and then use something else.
Below you'll find the formulas I use daily. Whether you give them a try via my site or go to your favorite health food store just make sure you do give them a try in order to find out if they help you too.

Listen Up! When You Have Pancreatitis ...
You Are Fighting a Battle! Your pancreas, for some reason, is trying to kill you. So think like a warrior by realizing ...
"The skillful strategist defeats the enemy without doing battle" - Sun Tzu, The Art of War.
Pancreatitis Diet and Bonus Info
Be careful of what you put in your mouth!

Do you have pancreatitis? Then read the sticky note above this section - read it over and over until you get it. You are now in a war, a battle for your life because for some reason, whether due to a gallstone obstruction of the pancreatitic duct, alcoholism, an accident with abdominal injury or something you have done (whether on purpose or accidently) your pancreas has, in some way, been injured. It doesn't matter if it shows on a CT scan. If your pancreas was perfectly healthy you wouldn't have the condition - period. In any event you are in trouble, you are now engaged in battle. And ...
"Every battle is won before it is fought" - Sun Tzu
This means that if you want to win the battle you need to out fox your pancreas. You need to know what will piss it off (cause it to become inflamed) or worse, to destroy itself, thereby killing you. And you need to take the appropriate actions to ensure that the first does not happen so the second does not happen.
Things to Know and Take Seriously.
1) You must eat to live instead of living to eat. When you have pancreatitis eliminating alcohol, red meat, pork, lamb, duck, butter, mayo, margarine and anything else with a high fat or oil content (deep fat fried or pan fried food are not a good choices) from your diet is absolutely imperative. Read labels on anything you purchase to eat. Make sure that hidden fats such as palm oil, coconut oil, butter, oil based products (margarine, coolwhip etc ..) do not enter your mouth but ...
That ain't all kemosabi. There's way more ....
2) Be careful of cough syrup, cold remedies and mouthwash because many contain alcohol and yes the alcohol in mouthwash can be absorbed via the skin, especially under the tongue.
3) Vanilla extract doesn't work either because of the alcohol and even a small teaspoon used in baking can cause problems.
4) Bananas must be eaten before they begin to spot because the spotting signals that the sugar is turning into alcohol (trust me I learned this stuff the hard way). And ...
5) If you haven't been told by your doc or figured it out yet from what I have said previously, alcohol is a real big no-no with pancreatitis. Yes, that means no wine with dinner, no beer at ball games and if you drink after I have warned you, well you might want to consider getting your head examined.
The important thing you must understand is that you need to make a choice between drinking alcohol, eating wonderful tasty food full of fat and possibly dying a horrible painful death or eliminating alcohol along with certain food and possibly living to old age. The choice is yours and I already made mine years ago.
Ok ...
I just remembered some other things I do that may be helping me and may help you as well.
Always think anti-inflammation.
6) Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. So when I feel unwell, like an attack is coming on, I immediately take aspirin. I used to wait until the pain was bad but I finally figured out it makes more sense to take the aspirin at the first hint of trouble. I'd rather waste 10 cents worth of aspirin than take a chance of pancreatic damage. And ...
I figure if I catch the inflammation early I am much better off.
I switched from high doses of motrin to 1300mg (4 tabs) of aspirin simply because I feel aspirin is safer. Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, it also thins the blood (helps keep blood from forming clots) so that when I get tachycardia I lesson the chances of developing a clot. So I get a double punch.
I use several spices that lower inflammation. For example ...
In my rice and vegetables for dinner tonight I added in a nice dose of the following:
- Cayenne Pepper
- Ginger
- Garlic
- Turmeric
7) Do not eat if you are not hungry. I have a family member who thinks it helps to eat when they are nauseous and most often they puke after eating. How dumb is that? What you need to understand is that if you are not hungry, I mean hungry, you can feel the hunger, your belly feels like it is starving and it is talking to you and it says: "feed me!" It is not a good thing to eat when you have pancreatitis. Not FEELING the hunger is a signal that your pancreas doesn't want to go to work and if you piss it off - you'll pay. Trust me. So ...
I am not talking about your stomach making gurgling noises, or maybe it is dinner time and you THINK you need to eat - I'm talking about the fact that you KNOW you are hungry and need to eat because you FEEL bonafide hunger pangs. If you aren't hungry - do not eat. Don't worry you won't starve. You can go up to two weeks without food but you do need to stay hydrated so drink water. But if you are not hungry don't eat.
8) Eat at Home. One of the things I have learned the hard way is that it is much safer to eat at home and to eat only what I myself have prepared. The reason is simple. Your family and friends may care about you, even love you dearly but they have been cooking their way for years. If they use a little butter, bacon fat, mayo, or marinade that chicken breast with a little wine or whatever - they inadvertantly think: "It's just a little, what's it gonna hurt?" Well, that little bit of bacon grease in the fried potaotes probably will make you very ill and could possibly lead to complications that kill you. You need to ask yourself: "Is it worth it?"
I know this is in fact what happens because I have become ill eating food prepared by frineds and family. I found the easiest way to remedy the problem ws to simply avoid the food prepared by others. I've had 2 wives and a myriad of live in girlfriends. They all, even though it was unintentional, made me sick with their food. My own mother, who loves me dearly, has made me sick with her cooking. You absolutely must take responsibilty for your own life (if you wish to live) and avoid eating food prepared by others. They simply don't get the significance of: "A little dab will do ya." And I don't mean that in a good way because that little dab may lead to the attack that turns chronic pancreatitis into an acute episode that ends your life with necrotizing pancreatitis or organ failure.
You may think I am being "anal" about this but I'm still alive after 30+ years. I've learned the hard way and I've been extremely lucky. I also understand that my luck could run out at any time. I'd personally prefer it were much later than tomorrow or next week. So, again, you need to choose between what is best for you, your health and in this case, your longevity and eating food prepared by others.
All in ONE Multi-Vitamin Mineral Formulation
All One Powder Multiple Vitamins & Minerals, Fruit Antioxidant Formula, 2.2-Pound Can
Amazon Price: $41.49 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
Vitamin-Mineral formulations are not created equal. Most are absolute garbage. I use this formula myself and even though I wouldn't rate it as exceedingly outstanding it does trump 85 - 90% of the products on the market. Most of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids come from plant based sources, however some are still of the low quality synthetic composition. But the majority of the formula is quite good. It's easy to take and the absortion is very good and it beats the hell out of buying and taking 30 - 40 different single products of better quality, if you can even find them. I'm happy with it and feel the difference. Give it a try to see if it fits you.

When Pancreatitis Makes You Sick ...
Our Lord and His Angels Will Help
The doctor who diagnosed me said " You're lucky to be alive." And ...
I didn't see any major resolution in sickness for another three years but while in an attack I prayed - alot. Talking to my Father helped and I know that during the worst episodes He had angels keeping me safe. I never saw them, but, I was never in fear, just pain. And for those of you who have experienced the pain, the type that is so bad you begin to lose touch with reality, things seem to move slow, it seems like a foggy pain racked dream - you know what I am talking about right? Asking your Father in heaven for comfort may help you bear the pain.

- Great article-I have been living with this issue since highschool: Diagnosed as everything from ulcers to allergy. (I'm 42-female) When I collapsed in pain 6 months ago & wound up in the ER the blood tests, followed by the CT finally identified it. 5 scopings later, the remedy for the complete blockage was supposed to be surgery to remove the duct, re-duct into the intestine & remove the gall bladder. I am a teacher without a job or benefits & basically broke, this was supposed to be done thru medicaid--BUT, pancreatitus is not coded under medicaid. So with only 72 hours to the surgery date, everything is on hold.
I have been doing everything you suggest (except for the supplements) & after significant weight loss I do feel stable- but scared of the next attack.
Was your duct blocked? Did they ever suggest surgery? My blockage is scarred over so bad they cannot remove without surgery...I am scared & if you have any input I would love to hear it.

- Hi Heidi, sorry to hear you are having pancreas difficulties. As far as I know I have had no duct blockage. I have never had surgery for pancreatitis and don't want surgery. I'm not comfortable recommending that folks should do anything because I'm not a licensed physician and do not wish to be prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license.
What I have shared on this page is what I did and still do personally to keep as well as possible. If someone else does what I do, they do it completely at their own risk.
I am walking a real tight rope on this page because people ask me stuff that if I answer could be construed as medical advice.
I can not give that.
I can only tell you what I would personally do and I have no clue what I'd do if I were in your shoes and I am even coming to the point where I hesitate to even say what I'd do because if someone does what I would do and for some reason they become worse I could be in deep shit even though everyone knows that IF they do ANYTHING I have done or still do it is at their own risk.
I feel bad about being evasive but the laws prevent me from giving advice. I would however, if it were me, be asking the surgeon what problems or complications could arise from removing the duct and re-ducting into the intestine, if he'd let someone cut out his duct (do the surgery) and what can be expected if I were to choose not to have the surgery. I'd also want to know how many times he has personally performed the exact same surgery and what his complication ratio was.
If your surgery happens I hope it is successful and you heal perfectly!
Thank you for visiting.

- I had an attack of severe pancreatitis on January 2 while at work (I work night shift). It took the doctors several hours to determine what I had, and by that time I was totally out of it, in some sort of confused state. With the initial onset, I had no pain, just weakness and feeling that I was going into shock. I was hospitalized for 24 days, mostly because I was so confused. The doctors told my wife that if I survived, I would never work again, and that I would have years of rehab. I lost 60% of my pancreas and now I am watching what I eat. I never was a heavy drinker, and the only things that I think of that could have caused this is the chemicals I worked with when I was a chemical operator in a chlorine plant, or possibly genetic. Anyway, the doctors said that I would never work again. I was released from the hospital on January 26 and went back to a full schedule at work on Feb. 13. I am functioning at about 99% of my former ability and the weight loss and better diet has dropped my blood pressure and my cholesterol. Thank goodness I live fairly close to one of the good hospitals that know how to deal with this. The first hospital I was at said that I would be sure to die if they did not transfer me the 70 miles to the good hospital, and thankfully they got that transfer done in time. I just wanted to tell my little story and to let people know that a prediction of death or doom does not always come true.

- Thanks for the response! I have not had a drop of alcohol of any kind since diagnosis and was never a huge drinker in the first place.
My biggest question: How do you keep your weight up? Or do you? That is one of the most difficult areas for me...I simply cannot eat as much as I obviously need to bring my weight back up to the level it was. I was never the brawniest person to begin with, but now I'm feeling like I'm starting to look like an Auschwitz survivor...have gone down two pants sizes, my clothes hang on me. (I am embarrassed to admit this, but I even resorted to buying some padded underwear on-line so my pants would fit better, and even on hot days this summer, I wore long-sleeved t-shirts under my long-sleeved shirts. I was too ashamed of being so skinny that I didn't even wear shorts or t-shirts this summer except for around the house.
Any advice?

- Keith, I must admit I have no good answer for you in regards to weight. With CP it is difficult to gain weight until healing takes place. If you are sick you either lose weight due to vomiting or malabsortion or both. Once you are able to eliminate AP and control the resulting CP, and when I say control I mean controlling the CP to the point you no longer have pain, nausea and vomiting, you may then also see your ability to eat foods that will help keep your weight up increase. Protein is necessary to keep muscle and when you can not consume enough protein it is difficult to build and or maintain muscle.
Vegetable sources rich in protein include beans, lentils and beans.
Once you have complete pain resolution (without drugs) and your pancreas has healed (no abdominal tenderness) you can begin adding foods such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, and milk for additional protein. And ...
The malabsortion may see improvement as well thus allowing you to gain weight more easily. The secret is to control the CP and I only know of one way to accomplish that and of course I have posted about diet and supplements. It takes time but it does work. I also found that I did something, completely by accident, that turned out to be a big step towards my recovery ...
Since I was no longer able to drink socially I began drinking grapefruit juice. I was diagnosed with AP and CP in 1979, started drinking grapefruit juice in I believe 1981. I drank a lot of it. My AP episodes stopped. I thought it was maybe diet and my drugs that did it but now there is evidence that points to grapefruit juice as the benefactor.
I was AP free for like 7 years while drinking copious amounts of grapefruit juice. I could eat more foods and began to regain weight. I felt better, not great but better. Then in 1994 I found grape seed extract and in 1995 added curcumin. For some reason I got away from drinking grapefruit juice but the vitamin C, grape seed extract and curcumin obviously did a great job because soon (I don't remember how long exactly but it was NOT over night) I was pain free. No pain, a lot less nausea and then my abdominal tenderness disappeared. I actually began to feel almost normal however ...
I wasn't quite normal or "cured" because without the supplements I became sick. With NO diet and supplements I again became sick. WITH BOTH diet and supplements I became well. And once I felt well, I also regained my weight and energy.
I still can NOT eat like a normal person who does NOT have CP. I can't eat pork, lamb, duck, steak, roast (NO red meat, pork, lamb or duck). I can NOT drink alcohol. I can't eat a lot of oily foods (potato chips etc) or foods fried in fats and oils. But ...
Unless I screw up by eating or drinking something I shouldn't I am pain free and have been for quite some time. I may be just lucky, but I don't think so. I think that, unless there is so much damage that the pancreas simply can not function, what I do will help anyone who decides to get serious about healing. It takes total dedication to a new lifestyle but it beats the hell out of pain and puking.

- Greetings, Health Guy! What an informative site! I was diagnosed with CP a few months ago, after having had 3 visits to the ER with acute attacks, the first one being gall bladder/gallstone related. When they removed my gall bladder, they said it was like mush. (I had had repeated acute attacks several times over a two year period prior to that and was misdiagnosed as having diverticulitis, so I would just let them pass...until the last one, which landed me in the ER.) I was never a particularly heavy drinker (I drank, but not to excess).
I am now in almost constant pain. I have a precription for Oxycodone/APAP which I take on occasion, but mostly rely on Acetaminophen. One of my biggest problems is weight loss...I have gone from 162 lbs. in late March to 135 lbs. now. I can hardly eat much of anything...have actually become "afraid" of food. No matter how healthy or "right" I try to eat, it affects me anyway. I drink one or two bottles of Ensure a day and try to eat things that are both low-fat and carry enough calories to at least keep my weight stable or possibly gain weight. Not an easy task!!! Any recommendations??
Also, do the NOW Foods Super Enzymes that you recommend take the place of Creon? My doctor has me on Creon 2400 capsules with every meal, but not sure they are doing a whole lot of good. I also take Floragen, which is a digestive enzyme as well. The Creon is quite expensive (something like $330 for a month's supply...fortunately, am still working and have insurance so they only cost me $20.00, but down the road, if I have to go on disability and Medicare, I doubt that I could afford them.)
This is a horrible condition (and one I had never even heard of until I was diagnosed with it. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.) Thanks for all the time you've taken to put this site together. Have learned more from it than from any other.
Regards,
Keith

- The only recommendations I have Keith would be to stop taking Acetaminophen because it is proven to cause liver failure. Switch to Ibuprofen or aspirin. Ibuprofen and ALL NSAID's carry risk but they actually address the inflammation of the pancreas (AP or CP) not the pain and once the inflammation resolves the pain does as well.
No alcohol none, nada, zip. Watch your useage of mouthwash, vanillia extract and cold remedies because they may contain alcohol. (vanillia extract and mouthwash like Listerene DOES contain alcohol).
The enzymes I use do take the place of Creon. Creon is a synthetic replication of panc enzymes I prefer natural as they tend to work better and are safer. Creon is made from pork and pork is HIGHLY inflammatory to the pancreas. Unfortunately most enzyme products are made from some animal but pork would certainly not be my first choice.
Do NOT stop taking your meds without checking with your doc. I am NOT a doctor and can not give medical advice. I simply do certain things, for certain reasons, and the things I do work for me - that doesn't mean I know what will work for you or suggest you do anything I do.
I hope you find a resolution to CP pain and damage.
Thank you for visiting!

- Hello!
I really enjoyed reading this lens. I fully agree with the 'treat for inflammation' ideology and have my own supplements etc that I take to manage my chronic pancreatitis. This is one of the most informative sites I have found so far for pancreatitis. I even printed it off and gave it to certain family members to read so that they can get a better understanding of the disease and how I intend to treat it. The head of my pancreas was left scarred and my pancreatic duct is unable to work due to a particularily bad acute attack with complications. I still cross my fingers for regeneration and think it's possible, especially since my symptoms are so mild (usually). So, take care and I look forward to using this site and all it's information as you update it!

- Hi,
My husband has not yet been formally diagnosed with pancreatitis but it is definitely leaning in that direction. He has been in the hospital 4 times within the last year due to severe dehydration from extreme vomiting. Almost always his lipase and amylase are very elevated. We have not yet found all of the triggers and I'm concerned because after this last bout just a few days ago the pain has not gone away and is there especially after eating. I am looking for ways to alleviate the symptoms and find the right diet for him. I have ordered a high quality multivitamin as well as various supplements, including vitamin c, a , and b. Also the woman at the health food store told me of great success that pancreatitis suffers had with aloe vera liquid. I'm willing to try anything. Please help. I'm so scared that he's going to become disabled and be in constant pain and we won't be able to care for our daughter or unborn son. I'm freaking out beyond belief and can't stop crying.
