Pandora Radio and Web 2.0

I just discovered an online radio service called  Pandora Radio.

This is a fantastic service and I am playing my own George Benson station.  In other words, Pandora Radio allows you to develop your own music radio station that is commerical free.

Check out the resources and videos belows...what a vision! Here's the Pandora Website

Welcome to the evolving world of Web 2.0 please check this lens at least monthly so see the latest updates!

With Pandora Radio, the digital age expandded our musical horizons by givng the customer to choose melodic options.  As an online music library, Panodr started as an experiment. Pandora was brought to life as the Music Genome Project.  This sophisticated project analyzed a huge variety of music. After extensive analysis conducted by musicians and techies working together, they came up with an engaging way to find music ranging from melody and instrumentation to rhythm and vocal arrangement within our favorite genres.

For example, let's say you're a Geoge Benson fan like me. You can start your Pandora radio station with a George Benson instrumental or song and Pandora will suggest new songs, similar in style but by different artists.  You tell Pandora your likes and dislikes while it learns your individual tastes.  Pandora gives you more of what you like and less of what you don't while you're finding new artists.

Like ipod playlists, you can start with different radio stations on Pandora, one for every mood or occasion. At the same time, Pandora's insight will help you understand the nuances and qualities of the music you like. So not only will you evolve while listening to music , so does your musical education.  You moving forward with the music you love, rather than looking back.

Quick Intro to Pandora Radio

Here's a quick intro on the origin of Pandora Radio

Created by musicians, Pandora Radio makes it easier for people to find music they love listen.

Pandara Radio has millions of songs broken down as a genome type project.

Their hard work paid off and lucky for us we can use it.

You can create your own radio station by listing two or three of your favorite musicians. The technology used by Pandora pulls songs from its huge database that share genes with those artists. The result is mixed music you love to hear based on your selection of musicians.

Pandora Radio Is A Little Different

What makes Pandora Radio different? Pandora does not use the concept of genre, user connections or ratings. Pandora Radio does not care what other people who like Gomez also like. When you create a radio station on Pandora, it uses a new and radical approach to delivering your personalized selections.

Pandora Radio software analyzes the musical structures present in the songs you like. Then it plays other songs that possess similar musical traits. Pandora relies on a Music Genome that consists of 400 musical attributes covering the qualities of melody, harmony, rhythm, form, composition and lyrics. The Music Genome project began in January 2000 and took 30 experts in music theory five years to complete. The Genome Project is based on an intricate analysis by actual humans (about 20 to 30 minutes per four-minute song) of the music of 10,000 artists from the past 100 years.

Pandora's launch its online service on August 2005. As of May 2006, the Genome's music library contains 400,000 analyzed songs from 20,000 contemporary artists. Latin or classical are currently not part of Pandora's database. However, Pandora is in the process of developing a specialized Latin music Genome and is still deep in thought about how to approach the world of classical composition.

Future of Pandora

The Music Genome Project is not new. Music producer Alan Lomax spent thirty years developing an interactive music and dance "jukebox." Using Genome analytical techniques social, cultural and historical connections between various art forms are made using Lomax's Global Jukebox. The Genome project analyzes the musical traits and dance moves and compares with social and other connections.

Pandora plans to use the "Long Tail" economic concept to turn academic analysis into cash. Helping customers find relevant content easily. Practically, Panodor can charge service with no ads and for the free service will have ads is the current model of Pandora. Pandora needs to pay licensing and bandwidth costs will referring to buy music to iTunes and other online or retail distributors.

Pandora is going to be compete with music giants like iTunes since they partnered with an electronics company to develop slim device or Pandora squeezbox similarly used for iTunes. The Panodora device will be used to control the streaming music anywhere in the home as well as going mobile such as a standalone player and apply it to cell phones and PDA devices. Of course, international licenses have to be worked out by Pandora
