Tips for Panic Attacks

I've suffered from panic attacks for years. Having one can surely be a frightening experience, but I have found some tips that helped me overcome a sudden attack.

First thing to know is while panic attacks are frightening, they are not medically harmful. All the symptoms you experience during an attack are just caused by your subconscious thoughts.

Please remember that the following tips don't help overcome the actual panic disorder, but they will help you regain control during an attack. It is advised to see a psychotherapist or get help in form of a self-help course to treat the underlying disorder.
  • If you feel you are starting to breathe rapidly and feel dizzy, breathe slowly in and out of a paper bag. This will help normalise your oxygen levels.
  • Distract yourself by solving math problems or counting down from 100.
  • Listen to music you like. Tell yourself those symptoms you feel are just caused by your thoughts and are not harmful or dangerous.
  • Splash your face with cool water.
  • Watch some funny shows on TV. Laugh out loud.
  • Talk to someone. Tell them how you are feeling right now. If no one knows about your panic attacks, talk about something else to distract yourself.
These tips will help you regain control when experiencing a panic attack. Please remember though to start treating the underlying panic disorder as soon as possible. A self-help course might be the best choice for you if you want to treat your panic attacks at home. Click here for more information.
