Innocence Has A Power Evil Cannot Imagine

PAN'S LABYRINTH (El Laberinto del Fauno) is a movie from director Guillermo Del Toro, best known to American film audiences for HELLBOY and BLADE II.  This incredible story is set in 1944 and is about a young girl who uses her imagination and fantasy to escape the horrors of post-WWII, facist Spain.

This film gained its first accolades when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, receiving a 22 minute standing ovation.  It went on to win seven Goya Awards, Spain's highest film honors, and three Academy Awards at the 2007 Oscars!

PAN'S LABYRINTH tells the story of Ofelia, a young girl living in Spain after the end of World War II. She and her mother are moving from a city to the country to live with her mother's new husband, a captain in the army. Captain Vidal is a staunch facist supporter, obsessed with killing anyone and anything that opposses him, even his own reflection. Ofelia's mother is pregnant with his child, a baby his believes to be a son. Ofelia loves to read and escapes into her book on fairies.

Next to the mill which serves as the captain's home and garrison stronghold is an old labyrinth. Mercedes, the woman who keeps the Captain's household, tells Ofelia the rocks are very old, and have been in place since before the mill was built.

One night, Ofelia ventures in the labyrinth and encounters a strange faun. Told that she is the lost Princess to an underground kingdom, she must complete three tasks in order to prove herself and be allowed to return to her former life. With her mother's impending delivery and the captain's escalating violence, Ofelia's tasks are not easy ones.

This film is being praised for the strength and imagination of the story as much as it is for the cutting-edge blend of pracital special effects and computer-rendering technology. As much as the film is a fantasy, it is also intelligent and an interesting look at a dark time in recent history.

Doug Jones talks about Pan's Labyrinth

Don't be surprised if you don't recognize Doug Jones right off the bat. He doesn't look very much like the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth. You might recall one of his previous characters from the movie Hellboy: he was the physical performance of Abe Sapien, the one who had to wear all the makeup.

For his next role, he'll be the one entirely in chrome. He's giving the physical performance behind the Silver Surfer in this summer's Fantastic Four sequel.

Comments and Feedback

I really enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth, even though I felt it ende on a really sad note. The story wasn't at all what I expected and I thought the little girl did an excellent job for it being her very first movie. I liked how the fantasy angle fit in with the harsh reality.

Have you seen the movie? If so, please tell us what you thought of it.
