Pansies, A Favorite Spring Flower

Pansies, Means "I'm Thinking of You"
Pansies are one of the earliest flowering plants blooming at the same time as the spring bulbs. Pansies are one of my favorite flowers because of their cheerful faces and the large variety of colors that they come in.
The pansy, a relative of the viola, is named from the French work penseé which means thought. It was probably named that because the pansy looks like it has a face. When a bouquet of pansies is given to you, it means, "I'm thinking of you."

History of the Pansy
Pansies appeared in the early 1800s when William Thompson, an English gardener, bred several species of violas and created in 1839 the "face" type pansies that we know today The first was named 'Medora'.By the 1850's many varieties of pansies had been developed in England, Scotland and Switzerland. By the end of the century, a single-colored form with no "face" was bred by a Scottish grower, Charles Stewart. To this day, breeders continue to develop pansies with novel colors and color combinations, larger flower sizes and durability.

Tips on Growing Pansies

- Pansies are a good choice to grow because they are relatively pest and disease free.
- Pansies like slightly acid soil and a well-drained location.
- The easiest way to grow pansies is to buy flats at the local nursery. Do not buy the plants that already have flowers on them. Select plants that are still small and do not have buds on them.
- When removing the pansies from their pots, carefully break the root ball apart . This will encourage the roots to branch out and grow into the surrounding soil.
- Dig the bed about 8 to 10 inches deep and incorporate compost into the soil. Plant the pansies about 8 inches apart. Water the plants and apply a few inches of mulch.
- Pansies are cool season plants and do well in spring and then again in autumn. They keep growing until winter.

Poems about Pansies
Every Time I See My Pansies by Nicholas GordonEvery time I see my pansies
Vivid in the golden sun,
You are with me in my garden,
And I am once again a child.
Vivid in the golden sun,
Their beauty brings me close to tears,
And I am once again a child
Learning to assume your grace.
Their beauty brings me close to tears
As I join hands with you in love,
Learning to assume your grace,
Dancing to your inner music.
As I join hands with you in love,
You are with me in my garden,
Dancing to your inner music
Every time I see my pansies

Pansy Books on Amazon
White Pansies by Archibald Lampman (1861 - 1899)Day and night pass over, rounding,
Star and cloud and sun,
Things of drift and shadow, empty
Of my dearest one.
Soft as slumber was my baby,
Beaming bright and sweet;
Daintier than bloom or jewel
Were his hands and feet.
He was mine, mine all, mine only,
Mine and his the debt;
Earth and Life and Time are changers;
I shall not forget.
Pansies for my dear one - heartsease -
Set them gently so;
For his stainless lips and forehead,
Pansies white as snow.
Would that in the flower-grown little
Grave they dug so deep,
I might rest beside him, dreamless,
Smile no more, nor weep.
