Panther Chameleons

Panther chameleons are beautiful reptiles, that come in a variety of colors.

Have you ever wondered how breeders ship chameleons?

These are our chameleons right after we got them.

They were packed in a styrofoam box, with a chiller, and newsppaper was used for cushioning.

Aren't they cute?

So far they all look fertile.

Velvet Winter Skye - My female panther chameleon

This is our female chameleon, Velvet Winter Skye. She is about 3 months old, and we've had her for almost a week.

She loves her crickets, but she's not so impressed with me.

It's amazing how much she changes - sometimes she looks green, sometimes gray, sometimes gray with blue or green streets (like she is in the picture), and sometimes she looks black!

It's always fun to try to figure out where she is in her cage.

Skye is usually in her ficus tree, and she can blend in pretty well when she wants too.

My husband is overjoyed, because he's seen her eat, and I haven't, but I'm pretty sure that will change soon.

Have you ever seen a panther chameleon drink?

It is very important to make sure that your panther chameleon is properly hydrated. One way to make sure your chameleon is properly hydrated is to watch it and see if it's drinking.

Feeding your panther chameleon

Panther chameleons need a variety of foods - from crickets, to silkworms, to dubias (my poor deprived chameleons probably won't be getting any roaches, unless someone else volunteers to come over and feed them), to mealworms, ...

Here are a few resources to help you determine which feeders, and which feeding methods are right for your panther chameleons.

What do you think about Panther Chameleons?

Sarah

Chammm, how little do you mean when you say little?

I only have experience with panther chameleons, and my chameleons do not like the be handled.

When I researched chameleons before getting one I read over and over that chameleons should not be handled because it is stressful to them.

If you do decide to get a chameleon and let your children handle it, they would have to know how to properly handle the chameleons and be supervised at all times.

Chameleons can hold onto a branch so strongly that they will pull their claws out before they let go - and a child who is impatient to play with his new pet now could cause serious damage.

Chameleons also need to be misted several times a day, and fed daily, and that can really crimp your lifestyle if you are used to traveling, or if you aren't home most of the day.

Chameleons also bite!

Here's some helpful information.

I'd love to hear what you do.
