Paper dolls - old favorites make modern collectibles and quiet toys
When I was a girl I had a huge collection of paper dolls. Most of my paper dolls were gifts that came with a special paper doll folder that stored the dolls and their clothes. Other paper dolls came in magazines my mother subscribed to such as McCalls. The newspaper usually printed at least one paper doll in the Sunday edition. Greeting card paper dolls were also very popular - in fact, paper doll greeting cards are still quite popular.
Printed paper dolls reflect popular culture and styles of the day when they're created. Paper dolls create a visual history of top musical performers, film stars, entertainers and presidents. Historical figures and toy figures are top favorites for paper doll designers. Many paper dolls showcase the best work of contemporary fashion designers and artists, too.
Paper dolls are still popular with children and adults - you can design and play with electronic paper doll games using your computer and the internet. Many collage artists and artists who enjoy creating Altered Art projects use paper dolls as a design element for their works of art.

Paper Dolls, all time favorite paper toys
Paper dolls have been popular, inexpensive toys for hundreds of years. Frequently used as advertising pieces for generations; magazines such as McCall's featured a new paper doll craft page in every issue. Cherished, fragile vintage paper doll collections are highly prized collectibles.According to the Original Paper Doll Artists Guild, the first manufactured paper doll - Little Fanny - was produced in 1810 by S&J Fuller, London, followed 2 years later in the United States by The History and Adventures of Little Henry, published in 1812 by J. Belcher of Boston.
European boxed paper doll sets started production and were exported to the US in the 1820s. The first celebrity paper doll portrayed ballerina Marie Taglioni, followed later by other dancers and her Majesty Queen Victoria.
More recently, artists have begun to offer paper dolls as giveaways or published in book format. Paper dolls are a perennial favorite with girls who have outgrown baby dolls - fashion, celebrity and famous people paper dolls are contemporary favorites. Animals with clothing are also a favorite paper doll variety. My favorite dress up animal paper dolls are cats, many from vintage collections now available in reprint form.
Paper dolls of the past were simple printed characters and clothes that could be cut out and attached to the doll with small fold-over tabs. A new paper doll set meant hours of fun cutting, trimming and arranging the dolls and their paper fashion wardrobes. Some paper dolls came with stand-up scenes or special folding books to store the dolls and their clothes after they were cut out.Today's paper dolls are made from paper, cardboard, plastic and even magnetic materials. Many newer paper doll collections are pre-cut or come in easy to use perforated sheets that are easy to punch out.
If you'd like to make your own paper dolls, you can purchase a paper craft die cut machine and software to design and cut your own paper dolls and paper doll clothes. Or, you can draw your dolls free hand or on your computer, print them on nice paper or card stock and cut them out with a craft knife and sharp scissors.

- I'd love for paper doll fashions to become popular again. Very simplistic fun: especially creating the paper doll's clothes. I still do in my free time. In fact I've started my own lens featuring paper dolls in a story about "paper doll trends".

- This is so cool -- I had no idea it was out there. Paper dolls were just about my favorite toy as a child, and I think they can be quite educational for kids. I've been preparing to write my own paper doll lens... Would you believe I was out scanning my own childhood paper dolls the other day to use as illustrations for the piece? Yes, I still have some of them tucked in a photo album. When I get that lens up, I'll remember to feature this one.

- Oh my Goodness, did you ever bring back memories . I had a huge Betsy McCall paper doll collection when I was little. I also used to sit for hours ( and force my little brother to participate) making my own dolls and creating my own designer paper clothes for them.
I continued this with my daughters. Lots of fun without any electronics required.
