Paper folding or origami?

Ranked #3,658 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #41,948 overall

Origami is the art of paper folding

The art of paper folding, known as origami, was first developed by the Chinese, who invented paper. However, when Buddhist monks brought paper and paper folding to Japan it became the art form it is today.

Origami really is the Japanese word for paper folding coming from ori meaning "folding" and kami meaning "paper".

As paper was originally very expensive, paper folding was only done for very ceremonial or important purposes.

Paper folding was also developed in Spain although it is unclear whether it developed independently or came from Asia.

Today origami can be found all around the globe and while it can still be an art form it is also child's play which makes it a great hobby for young and old alike.

A little bit... just enough to do some origami projects with kids. It's fun!

ChineseKitesforKids says:

I used to know a lot when I was younger. My best friend always had japanese exchange students at her house in the summer time. I could make a lot of boxes...animals, not so much =)

fanfreluche says:

Yep, I even tried to do some pieces a couple of time, with very limited success...I am not really good at it, and looking at the instruction on how to fold to get whatever it is suppose to be don't help me one bit!

Our recommendation for getting started

Origami is fun

Origami sailboat

My son loves making animals and objects that he can play with. Origami is endlessly entertaining to him because he enjoys creating the objects and then he enjoys playing with them after the fact. Some of his favorite designs are the balloon (that you blow up with air!), paper cup, and pig!

The right paper makes all the difference

I like that your son plays with the origami after making it. Have you heard of the pelican variation on the fortune teller? See my Action Origami Easy Paper Pelican lens for instructions. Have fun!

We have quite a few books on origami and have made a variety of designs. We agree with Noah, it is so much fun and entertaining. We like the crane and the story that goes along with it. Thank you for sharing.
