...and share a memorable letter

From the lens In Praise of Paper Letters.

Can you think of a letter you've written, or one you've received, which meant a lot to you? If you feel comfortable doing so, please share a few lines about it.

I just dropped some letters off at the post this afternoon! I love sending thank-you cards in the mail, as well as valentines.

I used to receive letters from my Grandma when she was alive. I was just looking at my memory box the other day and some of the letters brought back such clear memories - Laughs - and tears. Here is one piece of a letter which shows you what a fabulous person my Grandma was.
"Well, here goes. So watch out. I just finished a 22 page letter to L. so I'll give you fair warning. (ahead of time now) You'd better kick off your shoes, get comfortable in a chair and prop up your feet. Come to think of it you'd better fix you something to eat and drink because I have seven letters in front of me all from you guys. Come to think of it you'd better hide those shoes because these letters are going to be so long that you'll be so mad- I don't want to get hit in the head by a passing shoe. OK. How are you, sure you are all comfie -- You sure -- Got something to eat and drink. Maybe some chips, Okay. Here goes....."

I laughed so hard when reading that tears came to my eyes. :)

Ohhhh...your comment and the excerpt from your grandma's letter almost made me cry, too! I have all my family letters from the past 30-something years and they are my most precious possession in the world. Your grandma would be so happy that you're still reading her words and feeling that sweet connection. Thanks for taking time to share that with me.

Susan, thanks for the sweet blessing. I appreciate that. I wrote a paper letter just yesterday, and my poor hand cramped up after a few lines. It reminded me that a letter every week would be a very good thing - both for someone on the receiving end and for my hands!

Gorgeous. I am off now to stock up on nice notepaper and new shiny stamps. Blessed by an angel today (/my-angel-blessings).

Like your parents, we "courted" via the US mail and the telephone. And here we are 45 years later, so those letters worked! :) My sister Betty still writes 2 or 3 notes every single day before she goes to work - I so admire her for that. I just can't seem to discipline myself to do it. And it is so important! Letter writing is becoming a lost art.

Longing for snail mail now. Lovely sentiment; lovely lens. :)

I love sending and receiving letters, but I'll take them as email too. Not forwards, not group letters, but a good old fashioned meant for one person letter.

My daughter and myself only just finished writing to my Grandparents, they do not like typed letters, they only like proper letters, and although it is slower and you can't email them, it is quite nice to do, it does feel so much more personal, and they love it. Great lens

It's a shame that handwritten letters are quickly becoming something of the past. Most of the mail I receive now are either bills or junk :( 5*s to you.

I really miss writing to my best friend Marie, somewhere I still have a shoebox full of her letters!

I worry that with the onset of e-letters, our children's handwriting will deteriorate. What a thought provoking lens. 5 ink blots :o) to you Bonnie, lensrolled to my Valentines Day lens and I am off now to feature this lens on Love Letters of Great Men!

I think had written thank yous and condolence letters are important. I hate to see it replaced by email. There are times that a written thank you is called for and a condelence letter can give great comfort....one that the recipiant may read over many times.

Great lens! I have to admit condolence letters are about the only thing I still handwrite. 5* and lensrolled to The Great Christmas Card Debate which is also about handwritten notes!

Oh, of course email counts! I write emails exclusively. I think I've written about three handwritten letters in the past year. I do miss the feel of the paper and the excitement of tearing into an envelope from a friend or loved one. It's just a rarity anymore.

I think the time of letter writing is simply long gone. Why not encourage your kids to write grandparents an e-mail? Though perhaps they don't read e-mail yet?

I have nostalgia for letter writing as well - but if you had had an option of 0 letters written in the past year, that would have been the one I would have clicked in your poll. I do write long e-mails sometimes though. Does that count? I guess not.
