I am passionate about paper.  I have all sorts of paper from around the world with various designs - batik, marble, block-printed, hand-painted, botanical - you name it.  This lens is dedicated to the paper arts, including marbling, bookbinding, origami, paper sculpture, and so on.  If you have a similar passion, please share your website, lens, or comments in the guest book.  If you haven't yet seen the gorgeous items that can be made from paper, sit back and enjoy!

Papermaking

Recycling at its most artistic!

Making your own paper is incredibly easy and can have amazing results. It's as simple as tearing up your junk mail and adding water and weeds from your backyard, blending it all together and then straining out the excess water. Actually, you don't even have to use the weeds, though they do create a more natural look. For the most part, you can get started with items you have around the house.

Bookbinding

The first time I made a book, I was totally amazed. It looked like a book. It worked like a book. And I had made it in just a few hours. Origami

Origami literally means "paper folding" in Japanese. Designs are created from folding paper in various ways. Origami typically uses square paper and requires no cutting, taping, or gluing, but there are a number of styles of paper folding that don't adhere to these rules.

Joseph Wu's Origami Site
Joseph Wu is no less than an origami genius. If you want to be either seriously intimidated or truely inspired, this is the site to visit. His galleries are truely amazing. The site also has links to several databases of diagrams, but most of his designs are for more advanced folders.

Origami Tessellations

Eric Gjerde provides plenty of eye candy in his blog that primarily focuses on tessellated origami designs. A tessellation is basically a repeating pattern of geometric shapes.

Fabulous Origami Boxes

Tomoko Fuse is known for her beautiful origami art that is often quite functional. Origami boxes are typically "modular" meaning they require you to fold several pieces and then assemble them. This can be tricky, as the folds need to be very precise in order for everything to come together as intended. Beginners can do many of these projects, but patience will be required.

Origami Basics From Wikipedia

Category: Image - :Orizuru.jpg|right|thumb|200px|The traditional origami crane and papers of the same size used to fold it

Category: Image - :?? WUXGA.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Origami cranes

(from oru meaning "folding", and kami meaning "paper") is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. The goal of this art is to create a representation of an object using geometric folds and crease patterns preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper, and using only one piece of paper.

Origami only uses a small number of different folds, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The most well known form is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Contrary to most popular belief, traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603?1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper during the creation of the design.
