Travel Through Time and Space with Classic Illustrated Books
Let's start with Passepartout, the character featured as head of this lens.
He is the faithful and very resourcefull valet to Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days famous journey. He is such a fun character that he's the perfect intro to the incredible world of classic literature.
Classic Illustrated Deluxe highlights some of the best literature adapted in graphic novel format.
This lens will feature the first 10 books in the Classic Illustrated Deluxe series. As more get published (and I acquire them), more lens will be made, 10 books at a time.
Each book is illustrated by a diffferent artist, making for an amazing collection of talents.
For each book, I offer personal impression, a little history of either the story or the author depending on interest, examples of the art, a poll of readership, and anything else that feels right for that articular story.

#1 - The Wind In The Willow
by Kenneth Grahame
Numerous Movie Version Available
be sure to read the book first! ;p
- The first is from 1995 and is introducted through a mother reading to her children, then continues as an animated story. I understand from some of the comments below the video that this version is a classic.
- The second is a 1996 UK Theatrical Trailer using people with appropriate feature enhancements to play the part, and looks like quite the hoot. It starts Eric Idle, Terry Jones and John Clesse
- There is a new 2012 trailer which I am not including here because it's not shopwing much of anything. Once the movie out -or a better trailer-I'll consider adding it to the page.

Kenneth Grahame
1859 - 1932

Kenneth Grahame was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and lived the first 5 years of his life by the sea. When his mother died in childbirth, the father turned over care of his children -Kenneth, one brother, one sister and the new baby boy- to the grandmother, who lived in the village of Cookham,in Berkshire.
With spacious grounds, riverside living and boating, this idyllic setting would be the inspiration for The Wind In The Willow of later years.
Grahame could not attend college due to cost and went to work for the Bank of England in 1879, remaining there until her retired as its Secretary in 1908 due to ill health.
Grahame married Elspeth Thomson in 1899. They had one child, Alastair, who was sick most of his short life. Upon Grahame's retirement, they moved back to Cookham, where Grahame's bedtime stories he told his son became his literary masterpiece.

French Version
A Little History
and other facts
Around The World In 80 Days (Le tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours) was written by French writer Jules Verne and first published in 1873. It is one of Verne's most recognized work.Jules Verne wrote the book during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), during which he served as a coastguard.
Verne was fascinated with the possibility of traveling around the world with new technology advancements made in the 19th century, namely, the completion of the First Trancontinental Railroad in America in 1869, the linking of the Indian railways across the sub-continent in 1870, and the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
For the first time in history, it was now conceivable to circumnavigate the globe in reasonble comfort and safety -something previously reserved for the hard core adventurer.
Fun Fact: the adventure first appeared as a serial publication, with some readers believing the story was actually taking place. Bets were taken on whether Fogg and his crew would make it in time or not. Raiway companies and ship liners even lobbied Verne to appear in the book.
Since then, many travelers have re-ennacted or followed in Fogg's footsteps for their own circumnavigation around the world.
Jules Verne
1828 - 1905

Born February 8th, 1828 in Nantes, the busy port city in the south of France, Verne started writing short stories in boarding school. He went on to Paris to study law in the foot steps of his father, receiving his degree in 1850.
Verne married Honorine de Viane Morel in 1857. During his travels, he met fellow authors Alexandre Dumas and his son, and Vistor Hugo. Despite several rejections, Jules Verne's literacy career was launched after meeting editor and publisher Pierre Jules Hetzel.
His best known novels:
- 1864, A Journey To The Center Of The Earth
- 1870, Twenty Thousand League Under The Sea
- 1873, Around The Wrold In 80 Days
Jules Verne wrote about travel thorugh air, land, sea and space before practical submarines were invented or space travels remotely possible.
He is the second most translated auhtor. His books have been made into animated movies, TV shows and Hollywood movies.
