Paper Lanterns

Paper lanterns are made from paper, an expander, and some lighting source; they are a type of lamp, and they are notable for their simplicity and how cheap they are. Usually, they are lit by either a flame or a light bulb.

They come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colors. The simplest type of paper lantern is a paper bag with a candle inside of it. This is seen on Halloween, as it provides a spooky feel. But, contrary to this, white paper bags are used in the same manner by the Spanish during Christmas to provide a holy, peaceful look. Paper lanterns like this are more dangerous than they are given credit; they are easily knocked over, and this can start a fire rather quickly.

They are usually lit with a light bulb today, so you will need a cord and socket. These are called "hanging paper lanterns," "hanging lanterns," or simply, "paper lanterns." The cords are usually either ten or fifteen feet in length, and they have a maximum bulb wattage of sixty. Occasionally, one can find cords with higher wattage capacities, but sixty is by far the most common. Lanterns are usually used for temporary occasions, so they are usually run up a wall from an outlet and over the ceiling where they are hung by hooks. Paper lanterns which will be used more permanently are run through the walls and ceiling in effort to hide the cord.

Flame-lit lanterns are also very common, and these are usually used outside. They go well in gardens or in places where groups of people will be gathering, such as an outdoor dinner table. Be extra careful to place these lanterns out of the way where they will not get bumped into, for this can very easily start a fire.

These lamps come in a variety of colors and have various designs on them. The most common color is white, but they come in many other solid colors as well. Often, they will have designs which are usually of an Oriental theme, such as Chinese characters or Japanese kanji. One might see cherry blossom branch or bamboo drawings on paper lanterns as well.

Some makers of paper lanterns are willing to do custom lanterns, and they will allow you to design your own by putting a specific drawing or photo on your lantern paper. These make great gifts.

Paper lanterns are great additions to any home or garden, as they provide pretty, tranquil light and add to the aesthetic beauty of the area.
