What is Papertank?

Love to write? Love to read? Love Both? Great, plan on doing a lot of both there. Papertank is the ultimate source for writers, providing you the tools necessary to expose your talents and improve upon them with helpful criticism. Write about anything you want from poetry to movie reviews. Here you'll have a chance to give and receive help from writers all around the world. This is also a great place to mingle with other authors and discuss anything and everything about writing. If you're bored take a look at the vast and ever growing collection of articles sure to fit anyone's taste from science to romance to cow wrangling, we have it.

Most importantly, Papertank is a user-run website, you keep it running and play a big part in every single aspect of what makes this site what it is and what it will become.

What is this lens all about?

Papertank is a great site for all writers, however, I personally feel there are some great poets that use the site. It's my intention to highlight some of the better poems that have been published on the site.

Each poem on this lens has been voted as 'featured articles' on Papertank by their peers.

All poems are copyrighted by their authors and cannot be reproduced without their permission.

Why does 'Papertank Needs You'?

Papertank is a site that relies on its members. Without members posting their work, and without the members reviewing each others work, then the site will become stale and die.

Therefore, if you love writing come and join us...we don't bite....too much!!!

Gone are the Gardens of the Gods by Treborsinna

SimeyC said: " Very interesting commentary on society. Not sure if intended this, but it can be read as a commentary on individuals or the whole society....
It flows very well and keeps you reading.

Gone are the gardens of gods-
Father time has abandoned us as Mother Nature's abortion.
Here are the days of black gold, cheap sex and masochist majorities
-We dine alone, with unwelcome grace and relaxed grimace
Our lives have lengthened, medicines efficacious, death's rights suspended-
Earth's hunger for love has augmented in our longevity
-Green has gone,
Green is greed and malign
Hallowed American ideals decaying-sprawled wasted and dour
Frightened flies in crowded corners, scavenging crumbs
-Reckless and penurious
We scream for more, excitement and explosions,
Body counts and heroes; inlaid needs for attention
Trees, ozone and peace with oil
We petition for the extinction of death while we kill for religion
-How we have made our mother proud
.

My favorite writers from Papertank

My favorite poets from Papertank are listed below in no particular order (Note some of them haven't received a featured article on Papertank yet, but I am sure they will one day):

Irishgirl - has the ability to produce evocative and powerful poetry that pulls at the heartstrings. Her prowess with the language and her ability to write from the heart come through in all her poetry.

imdeadgoaway - this young man is prolific. His talents range from comedy, to satire, to terror to sublime poetry. His passion for his art flows through in all he does.

Crowley - if ever I wanted a mentor, then Crowley would fit the bill. Perhaps the most accomplished poet on Papertank, he constantly produced quality poems that are simply excellent, varied and professional.

Blamninja1 - is probably the most under-rated writer on Papertank- he constantly writes quality poetry and fiction. What is amazing is that you never know what you'll get - one day it'll be a dark sinister story - the next it's a in your face, laugh out loud poem.

I'll add to this list as the days go by - there are so many talented writers on Papertank but it's almost impossible to list them all in one day. Just visit Papertank and find out for yourself.

Duel - should poetry rhyme?

If you look at the poetry on my Lens, you'll note that there are barely any that rhyme. This seems to be a modern trend.

Should poetry rhyme?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes - all poetry should rhyme!

stacey says:

OOOh my kind of a question!

Should poetry rhyme?

Yes and No

There is no rule saying that poetry should or should not rhyme. Every poet has their own way/style of writing and if their pen flows in the direction of rhyme then so be it. Saying this, if their pen flows in the non rhyming direction this is equally acceptable.
This is what makes the poetry world so different and interesting.

No - modern (contemporary) poetry can be free verse.

0ctavias0fferings says:

It can rhyme or not all depending on the desired effect. I use both rhyme and free verse

Hence me ticking both boxes ;-)

Portable_eBay says:

That would depend on the poem...

LauraFincannon says:

No, but it can be effective, fun, interesting when it does.

Irishgirl says:

I enjoy rhyme in a poem but it shouldn't be given too much inportance, for me the 'flow' is important and sometimes rhyme (and often bad rhyme) is used by aspiring writers as a shortcut or replacement for rhythm.

That said, when you know how to do it and when rhyme is used properly it can be hugely effective. I try for rhyme in a lot of the pieces that I write, but also try to stay away from the old hackneyed 1,2,3 beat that you can fall into.

Also, there is a scope in free verse that may not be offered in rhyme, it all depends on what you are writing and how you use rhyme (or don't use it as the case may be)
