The Best Little Dog Breed: Papillon - Butterfly Dog

This lens was one of the first couple of lenses that I created back in August of 2010 when I first became a member of Squidoo. Since then, I've created some more lenses and learned a few things, so I'm returning to the older ones to give them a bit of a facelift so to speak and some much needed love.

Have you heard of a papillon? The question I most often get when people first see my papillon dog Tina, besides joking and asking whether Tina is a cat, is "Is that a long-haired chihuahua?" or "What type of dog is that?" No, she is not a long-haired chihuahua nor is she a cat (smile), Tina is a Papillon or butterfly dog. My little butterfly girl.

This lens is about the Papillon breed of dog, which, if you have not met one yet, will win your heart over in just a few short minutes. Papillon dogs are sweet, loyal, love to cuddle, and they make awesome friends and companions.

If you are looking for that perfect small breed, this may be the dog for you!

UPDATE! We have a new addition to the family -- Pepper! He was born on August 18, 2011, and we brought him home in January of 2012. Welcome Pepper!

Papillon - the Butterfly Dog

History of the Papillon

The Papillon's Long History

Papillon [pap-uh-lon; Fr. pa-pee-yawn] is a French word meaning butterfly. The papillon breed made its way to the United States in the early 1900s, having originated from France. The Papillon is a very old breed of dog, reportedly around 700 years old. They are often seen in paintings going back to the 1500s accompanying French and Spanish noblewomen.

According to the American Kennel Club, the Papillon, in addition to being referred to initially as the Dwarf Spaniel, then the Continental Toy Spaniel. It is believed that the Bichon was crossed with a smaller type of Spaniel to get the resulting Papillon breed. However, there is some discrepancy in that as there are two types of Papillons, one with furry pointed, erect ears, which is the Papillon type, and the other, the Phalene, has as ears that are more droopy and much more furry. Either way, the silhouette of the ears should resemble the shape of a butterfly.

The Papillon breed has a very good temper and they are easy to train. They are generally quiet, only barking when necessary. They are friendly, smart, and loyal companions. It has been my experience that they get along with most other dogs too. They like to be included in the family and are generally just happy little dogs.

Finding Another Papillon

Buyer Beware in Finding a New Puppy

Watch Out For Scams!

In December of 2011, we decided we wanted to breed Tina. Not only because a few of my close friends have asked me if we are ever going to breed her and because she is such an awesome and remarkable dog, that I hope she has a daughter exactly like her.

So, we decided to get a male and allow her to breed one time and then get the male neutered. I am sure she will only have a couple of puppies, afterall she only weighs about five pounds.

I know many people (and I was raised this way) do not believing in breeding pets. But these puppies already have great, loving homes and she isn't even pregnant. Tina is a remarkable dog and that's why I want to allow her to have one litter. I will keep one of the puppies.

Anyhow, when I decided to begin to look for a male Papillon, I found that there are a lot of scams out there when looking for a puppy. People want you to send them money and they claim they will fly the dog to your location. I want to let people know to watch out for these types of scams.

Luckily, I found a nice breeder in Oregon so my daughter and I took the several hour drive to Medford and picked up our puppy. It worked out great and we have a nice little male dog in our family now. He is only six months old and Tina isn't in heat, so it will be a while if she does get pregnant.

Princess Baby Girl in her very favorite spot. I call her my parrot dog because she enjoys sitting there up on my shoulder. This picture was taken when she was still pretty young. Notice how low she was on my shoulder. Now when she gets up there, she sits much higher, balancing her body and enjoying riding on mom's shoulder.
