Excellent explanation of a parable! The parables are one of my favorite parts of Scripture. Thanks for sharing!
  • thomanna Mar 4, 2012 @ 8:28 pm | delete
A parable is a Truth hidden within a story. The parables were not meant to expound upon a truth, they were meant to hide it from those who did not have the spiritual discernment to understand. Even the disciples themselves had to ask Jesus to explain them. So that " seeing they may not see, and hearing, they may not understand." I do have to disagree with listing "The Rich Man and Lazarus" as a parable. Lazarus was specifically named, and the rich man actually talked with Abraham. In the parables, names were not used. I believe the story of the rich man and Lazarus shows Christ's omnipotence. This is just my opinion. Love the lense!

Questioning ones belief in the form of parables positively reinforces an open mindset to seek the truth and a closed mindset to believe in His Father.

Excellent lens explaining the parables of Jesus. I have a lot of studying to do! I used to read my Bible daily, but things just happened, and I stopped reading it. I thought you might like to know that this lens is my 1,000th lens-like! ;-) Thumbs up and bookmarked. ~Vicki~

I'm reading through Matthew right now, in the section with the parables. It's good to go back and re-read stories that you've heard for years. They speak to me differently now, with a tiny bit more wisdom under my graying hair.
  • RonFosterCa Jun 26, 2011 @ 12:49 am | delete
Thanks for the list of parables. I was also thinking about what Jesus said when He was asked about His use of parables: "To you has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given...This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear…” Jesus’s use of parables was to fulfill what Isaiah said. Parables were, in effect, a judgment against the religious leaders of the day. There eyes were not opened, and their ears were unable to hear because God shut up the secrets of His kingdom through the use of parables. (See Matt. 13:10-17). Incidentally, this is the same reason Revelation takes the form of visions. God uses simple things to confound the wise!

Please visit my squidoo page as well. Blessings, Ron.

Thanks for this focus on one of my favorite and certainly most impacting parts of the Bible. The parable of the Good Samaritan is featured in my newest lens on church rejection, and many of the parables impact how I live my life. Thank you!

Great lens, and thanks for the lists. It's amazing that Jesus chose to teach deep truths with unforgettable stories that awaken our empathy and imagination. He didn't give us dry theology; He gave us windows into the heart of God. You've given us a great resource with this lens...
  • GospelSmith Oct 4, 2010 @ 8:56 pm | delete
Jesus still speaks in parables today. Many of us go through unexpected circumstances, only to find that when we pray about them, we suddenly realize we have just lived through a parable that tells us a deeper message.

Great lens brother. Coming across your site reminded me of something the Lord had me write. I titled it "The Master Painter. The Lord has used it numerous times to touch the hearts of His people. It is so amazing how the Lord uses such Parables to get behind the defenses of the mind. What an awsome God we serve.

My children have a wonderful little story book called "The Parable of the Lily". It's a beautiful Easter story based upon the teachings of Christ. I'd be very interested in seeing you make a lens on the best Biblical story books for young children - we're a bit tired of Alice in Bibleland.

"One common characteristic of the parables he told was that they would contain a twist which would have been totally unexpected by the original listeners." When you begin to understand how shocking some of these parables were to Jesus' contemporaries, it's no wonder they viewed him as a revolutionary.

    Great lens.
