60th Annual Wardsboro Fourth of July Street Fair and Parade

This small Vermont town fair began back in 1949 when community members were brainstorming ideas to raise money and has turned into a celebration that brings people back year after year.

Wardsboro 4th of July

Some people look forward to building floats and others watching the parade. There are the famous home-baked pies and the strawberry shortcake. The A-Z Club many no longer make quilts and aprons but their spirit lives on in the Quilt show and the old photos at the Historical Society exhibits.

Don't miss another year of this wonderful hometown 4th of July Celebration in Wardsboro, Vermont

Wardsboro's 4th of July Celebration is not to be missed...

Parade

Though Wardsboro, Vt. is usually a quiet town, it quickly fills up on the morning of the fourth. People come from the far corners to join in the celebration.

The Wardsboro's Fourth of July street fair and parade is the oldest in the State.

Parade

Each year as many as 5000 visitors get up early and join the population of about 700 to celebrate the Country's Independence.

The fields have been hayed to park all the cars. The Mooover, a bus painted with cow spots, shuttles those who come late enough to need to park further away.

Booths of all kinds are open by 8:30 am. There are Craft Booths, Antiques, Fine Art, and books. The White Elephant Sale sells goods donated to the cause and helps raise further money,

BuntingThis year the auction has been replace with bingo but the highlight of the day is the parade.

The parade consists of floats, antique cars, fire engines, and tractors, bands and marching bands, which march through the town, up into a field at the end of the road, turn round and march back through, so you get to see the parade two times!

When you get hungry there's the Hot Dog Booth, Strawberry Shortcake, Chicken BBQ, and Wardsboro's famous home baked pies.

There are games for the kids, history exhibit, quilt exhibit, flower show and a display of paintings by local artists.

You couldn't find a better place to spend the day than at Wardsboro's 60th Annual 4th of July Street Fair.

We are still searching for new articles for this year's parade where we will be celebrating our 60th year. Nancy Perkins has graciously agreed to chair the committee again this year and we all know that means that it will be another great day to remember.
The Fourth of July: Wardsboro Style - Brattleboro Reformer
Settled beyond the shadows of Mount Snow, just north of Dover, the Town of Wardsboro has one claim to fame - the Wardsboro (pronounced Waads-bá-rah) Street Fair held on the Fourth of July.

The tradition was started over 58 years ago by Pastor Douglas Pierce as a fundraising effort for the churches in Wardsboro. Now sponsored by the Wardsboro Methodist Church and the Wardsboro Yoked Parish, its success is attributed to their coordinated efforts with the Friends of the Wardsboro Library along with 50-75 volunteers ranging from year-round residents to out-of-towners.They contribute their time and effort to make the Street Fair come together with an enthusiasm not unlike a family reunion.

Not a whole lot has changed over the years, according to Alan Bills, a long time resident of Wardsboro. This year's coordinator is Nancy Perkins. She has also been involved with the Street Fair for more than 25 years, and is also a member of the Friends of Wardsboro Library.

The women of Wardsboro have always needed to be thrifty. By piecing together quilts they used up scraps and turned them into beautiful works of art. Don't miss the Quilt Show in the Church.

This 1963 CJ-3B, possibly the lowest-mileage flat fender Jeep still in existence, was owned more recently by Adam, and driven in the 4th of July 2000 parade in Wardsboro, Vermont. It was accompanied by some WWII-vintage jeeps (50K JPEG). Adam says, "It's one of the bigger events in Vermont, now in it's 52nd year. People come from all around the state, and the Northeast for that matter. There is a car show/parade, marching bands, floats and a street fair. Later in the day a auction is held and all the proceeds go to the local Fire Dept. All of townspeople chip in and run it. It's a feast for the senses, and a real piece of Americana."

Wardsboro Vermont 2008 4th of July Parade

In 2008 the Wardsboro History House was set up to show what a typical home might have looked like before electricity came to town.

Everyone looked around their homes and donated items for the day. A cast iron sink, a four poster bed and old town reports were just a few of the items on display.

Local historians were there to answer questions. Next year we may be looking for reenactors to help the scene come alive.

The photo committee of the Historical Society of Windham County will present a slide show, a picture sharing program, and talk about the photographic process of making prints from glass plate negatives. The photo committee, consisting of Charles Marchant from Townshend and Dan Hescock and Bob LeBlond from Wardsboro, have worked on glass plate photo processing since the early 1990s. In that time period they have processed several thousand images.

To date over 1,900 images from the Vaile glass plate collection have been printed and mounted in 16 photo albums. These albums depicting life in Vermont in the late 1800s and early 1900s will be on display for all to enjoy. Comments or additional information about the people or places viewed will be welcome.

Visitors to the evening activities are invited to bring their own glass plate negatives and post card views. In addition to the Vaile collection, Marchant, Hescock and LeBlond will show examples of other glass plate collections they have worked on in the past including views from many towns in Southern Vermont.

Bright spots in '08: Rutland Herald Online
"He's always there" - June 15, by Kevin O'Connor

Six months after his "Dad, teacher and mentor" died of cancer, 16-year-old home-schooler Willie Finkel shared his memories of Robert Finkel this past Father's Day.

"He taught me addition and subtraction," the Wardsboro boy recalled. "Before I could read, he had me doing fractions, percentages and basic geometry."

His father, winning a full scholarship to Columbia University at age 16, had graduated with a rare triple-major degree in English, philosophy and math.

"He loved math because it's so stable," his son says. "If you follow basic principles, you can solve almost any problem. I think he wished the rest of life would be like that."

Instead, Bob - a paramedic, cardiac rehabilitation specialist, health educator and researcher - was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2007 and died last December at age 63.

But he taught his son well. Willie, facing this past year without a lesson plan, interviewed family members and friends so he could write a biography of his dad. He also applied and won acceptance to Marlboro College, where he started this fall (like his father, at age 16).

Vermont...A State of Mind
In a couple of weeks, I will be sitting in the front row of the annual Wardsboro 4th of July parade...a throwback in time...taking in the sun (I hope) and watching 500 other people enjoy the simple pleasures of celebration and community complete with chicken barbecues and pie eating contests. Given the fact that there is only one street in Wardsboro, a town of 200 people, everyone also gets to see the parade twice. Once when it goes down the street and, of course, a second time, when it turns around and returns. That's Vermont.

Donations: care of the West Wardsboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 187, West Wardsboro, VT 05360.

The Betty Boop Bus, a service that provides transportation for twice-monthly shopping trips to Brattleboro for residents from the West River Valley, recently received a $1,500 grant from the Stratton Foundation.

The Betty Boop Bus goes into Brattleboro on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. A $10 donation is requested, but Parsons said no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Parsons said she is looking for more riders from the West River Valley, and she will also swing through Dummerston Center to pick up riders there. The bus has room for 24 people, or 16 people and four people in wheelchairs.

For more information about the bus, or to make an appointment for a ride, call 802-874-4634. Parsons said the bus is also available for small group trips for schools, church groups and the like.
