There Is Not A Terrorist Under Your Bed
It may seem like a silly thing to say, but people - and their governments - make important decisions because of fears like these. In this age of out of control Homeland Insecurity, we need to remember that life is almost completely safe, and that ordinary traffic on the street is the biggest danger we will likely face. We do not need to overreact to terrorism, or school shootings, or any of our other fears.
It is time for America to calm down, and stop acting so afraid all the time.

Fear of what could happen in the future would only be well-founded if we could actually predict the future.

The Trumansburg Bomb Threat Fizzle
A firecracker blew up in a toilet. Now they're freaking out.
It started out as a mystery in the small village of Trumansburg, in upstate New York: Why were the Trumansburg schools closed on a sunny warm day in April, with no official notice or explanation on the school web site? Later that day, the schools issued a press release explaining that there had been a pair of bomb threats and an exploding firecracker in a middle school toilet.By nightfall, rumors were running rampant through Trumansburg, including one piece of news spread by word of mouth that a bomb had been found on the school playground. Actually, no such bomb was there.
At an evening meeting, panicky parents demanded surveillance cameras to watch students at all times. It was announced that all students and adults would be searched, and adults would have to present drivers' licenses, and security guards would be hired to help keep the school in a special security "lockout".
All over a couple of notes and a firecracker. Homeland Insecurity has hit the village level.
