Ghost Hunting Reality Shows

I have always had a little interest in reading about the supernatural. As a kid we played with the Ouija Board, had seances, read supernatural books, hung out in old cemeteries as a teenager and told ghost stories about vacant or abandoned houses. But, I never really believed....well, maybe just a little.

Cable television has gone crazy finding and adding anything paranormal to their line up. At first, I was really intrigued. I watched every show I could find. My sister would call to alert me when she found a show being aired at an unusual time. Why are millions of viewers attracted to these shows?

* Is it that people really want to know what happens to a soul that is not at rest?
* People are skeptic and yet they are trying to prove that ghosts exist?
* Viewers want to know the difference between a good and a bad spirit?

For centuries people have been interested in learning more about the supernatural. But now we have ghost hunting reality shows that brings this topic directly into our home. I must admit that I believe a lot that I see on these shows is just plain entertainment. Sometimes, the investigators are just over dramatic.

One of my favorite Friday night shows is Ghost Adventures. I do believe that these guys put themselves into situations that is just asking for trouble from the other side....but, that sells television doesn't it? I've seen some compelling evidence though from some of their investigations. I wish Aaron would stop screaming, "Oh, my God!" in every other scene. This is truly annoying. Or, when Zak wanted to have a Valentine's Day rendezvous with a female spirit, that was just wrong.

It appears that these investigators in all of the shows that I've seen are mostly just normal people from every walk of life all with a "like" interest of hunting supernatural spirits. One of the new shows I discovered, Dead Files, airs on the Travel Channel on Friday nights after Ghost Adventures, has an interesting twist. Steve DiSchiavi is a Homicide Detective and Amy Allan is a Physical Medium. I like Steve. He is a "just the facts" kind of person. Amy just amazes me how much information she is able to decipher just from what she sees and feels.

After a while, I finally got my fill of watching all these paranormal shows. At first, I couldn't get enough. Don't get me wrong, I still watch them every once in a while, I am just not obsessed anymore. When I got to the point of being scared and not being able to sleep, I decided that was enough.

Skepticism

Many ghost-hunting groups say they find evidence of something they can't explain through scientific or natural means, yet critics question ghost-hunting's methodology, particularly its use of instrumentation, as there is no scientifically-proven link between the existence of ghosts and cold spots or electromagnetic fields. According to skeptical investigator Joe Nickell, the typical ghost hunter is practicing pseudoscience. Nickell says that ghost hunters often arm themselves with EMF meters, thermometers that can identify cold spots, and wireless microphones that eliminate background noise, pointing out the equipment being used to try to detect ghosts is not designed for the job. "The least likely explanation for any given reading is it is a ghost," maintains Nickell. Orbs of light that show up on photos, he says, are often particles of dust or moisture. "Voices" picked up by tape recorders can be radio signals or noise from the recorder and EMF detectors can be set off by faulty wiring or microwave towers.

According to investigator Benjamin Radford most ghost hunting groups including The Atlantic Paranormal Society TAPS make many methodological mistakes. "After watching episodes of Ghost Hunters and other similar programs, it quickly becomes clear to anyone with a background in science that the methods used are both illogical and unscientific". Anyone can be a ghost investigator, "failing to consider alternative explanations for anomalous ... phenomena", considering emotions and feelings as "evidence of ghostly encounters". "Improper and unscientific investigation methods" for example "using unproven tools and equipment", "sampling errors", "ineffectively using recording devices" and "focusing on the history of the location...and not the phenomena". In his article for Skeptical Inquirer Magazine Radford concludes that ghost hunters should care about doing a truly scientific investigation "I believe that if ghosts exist, they are important and deserve to be taken seriously. Most of the efforts to investigate ghosts so far have been badly flawed and unscientific --- and, not surprisingly, fruitless."

Unfortunately, I don't watch any any more - Yvette Fielding presenter of Most Haunted kind of spoiled it for me with her panicking every 5 minutes of the show. Karl would have made a better presenter imo

Paranormal Described
A general term (coined ca. 1915-1920) that designates experiences that lie outside "the range of normal experience or scientific explanation" or that indicates phenomena understood to be outside of science's current ability to explain or measure. Paranormal phenomena are distinct from certain hypothetical entities, such as dark matter and dark energy, only insofar as paranormal phenomena are inconsistent with the world as already understood through empirical observation coupled with scientific methodology.
What is a Ghost?
The soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or wispy shapes, to realistic, life-like visions.
Supernatural
Is not subject to the laws of nature, or more figuratively, that which is said to exist above and beyond nature.
Poltergeist
A paranormal phenomenon which consists of events alluding to the manifestation of an imperceptible entity. Such manifestation typically includes inanimate objects moving or being thrown about, sentient noises (such as impaired knocking, pounding or banging) and, on some occasions, physical attacks on those witnessing the events.
Demon
A supernatural being from various religions, occultisms, literatures, and folklores that is described as something that is not human and, in ordinary (almost universal) usage, malevolent.
Charles Fort
(August 6, 1874 - May 3, 1932) was an American writer and researcher into anomalous phenomena. Today, the terms Fortean and Forteana are used to characterize various such phenomena. Fort's books sold well and are still in print today.
Shadow People
Supernatural shadow-like humanoid figures that, according to believers, are seen mostly in peripheral vision and move quickly. They are sometimes known in modern folklore and paranormal popular culture as dark entities with malevolent intentions.

One of the most famous archaeological sites in the world is the buried army of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang. The Qin Dynasty came to an end in 206 B.C. In 1974, farmers made this extraordinary discovery while drilling wells in search of water near the Chinese city of Xi'an. Since that time, millions of visitors have marveled at the ongoing excavation. Each of the over 8,000 life-sized terra-cotta figures, organized in ranks of infantry, cavalry and charioteers, are modeled with distinctive features and are thought to be portraits of actual, living soldiers from that time. # Our set of four gray terra-cotta reproductions is made by a family workshop in Xi'an not far from the original site. These stately figures capture the proud military bearing detailed uniform regalia of the originals. An excellent gift for a military enthusiast or history buff. # Millions of visitors to Xi'an, China have marveled at the excavation of the 2,000-year-old terracotta armies of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang. More than 8,000 life-size figures of soldiers and horses were buried to protect the emperor's tomb. Even more remarkable is that this multitude of statues are each modeled with unique, distinctive features and are thought to be portraits of living figures. The emperor Qin Shi Huang would not have liked to hear it, but reduced down to a more modest size, some of his loyal soldiers turn out to make evocative table and desktop decorations, guarding personal documents particularly effectively.
