Great authors and reads you should try

I'm a fiction junkie but my addiction lies with paranormal romance.
I grew out of historical romances back in my teens, and for many years I didn't pick up another romance until I came across a book while browsing at Walgreens. I'll be honest, the cover was what drew me. It was different, captivating and mysterious. The cover had me wondering what the book was about. I didn't know it was a romance until I picked it up and read the excerpts. The story line was much different than any romance I had read before. There were faes, druids, magic and gorgeous men in kilts.

I was a little hesitant about giving the book a try but I'm glad I did because I discovered the world of paranormal romance. That book I picked up was "The Dark Highlander" by Karen Marie Moning. I've been hooked ever since. I've found that there are very few series and authors that I can get into so much that I truly get pulled in and lost in the story. So far Ms. Moning is the only author other than Jane Austen that I've found worth reading every piece of writing she's ever published. There are, however, some other great authors that have worth while series/books to try.

If you've never heard of paranormal romance you should definitely check it out, especially if you like a lot of history, creativity, action with a bit of romance. Not all recommendations are romance though, some are just really good paranormal fiction.

Mona Lisa Darkening

erotica

I just finished the sixth installment of Sunny's Mona Lisa series, "Mona Lisa Darkening". I was surprise with this one, I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as the first three because the last couple seemed to drag on. I wish my favorite character (Amber) had a bigger role in this book though. It's a pretty good story, not quite romance more erotica, which is something I don't normally enjoy (too much sex and in this story the main character has five lovers. I KNOW). Sad thing is though is that the author said that's the last book of that series for a while, she's working on a new series. It's depressing. Just when I started getting back into the series. I'm guessing it's not the end of the series, or at least I hope not because it didn't feel there was any closure.

Description:
"On the vernal equinox, Mona Lisa is taken against her will to NetherHell, the cursed realm of the damned. In this place, she will be torn from both within and without by desire, love, and ecstasy. And when her first love crosses the boundaries of the world to rescue her, she must choose her own destiny-before others choose it for her."

Bone Crossed

paranormal/popular fiction

Last week I finished book 4 ("Bone Crossed") of Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series. I've notice a great improvement in the flow and writing style in this book. The story just flowed more smoothly, whereas the previous ones did a lot of back tracking and slim on the storyline. I can't wait for Book 5.

In this book you'll see Mercy grew more emotionally and come to a revelation about herself. You'll see her relationship with a certain someone grow and another person being forgiven.

Up in Smoke

Katie MacAlister

This is the second book in her Silver Dragon series.

"Doppelganger Mayling is the mate of Gabriel, a Silver Dragon. Unfortunately, however, Mayling was specifically created to be the consort of the Demon Lord Magoth, an oversexed, narcissistic, cleverly evil villain with an ego the size of Hades. Gabriel is a very powerful leader, so Mayling is amazed when he tells her to go through with the consort ceremony. Gabriel might love Mayling more than life itself, but he has his reasons for convincing her to hook up with Magoth. The second in the Silver Dragon series (Playing with Fire, 2008), this zany paranormal, with its madcap plot and screwball characters, will work its magic with MacAlister's many fans and make some new ones along the way." --Shelley Mosley

The Darkest Whisper (Sabin's story)

by Gena Showalter

Showalter's fifth installment to her "Lords of the Underworld" series. Release date: September 2009.

Excerpt: Chapter 1

"CHAPTER ONE

Sabin, keeper of the demon of Doubt, stood in the catacombs of an ancient pyramid, panting, sweating, his hands soaked in his enemy's blood, his body cut and bruised as he surveyed the carnage around him. Carnage he'd helped create.

Torches flickered orange and gold, twining with shadows along the stone walls. Walls that were now spattered with vivid red, dripping%u2026pooling. The sandy floor was thick like paste, wet and colored black. Half an hour ago it had been honey brown, grains sparkling and scattering as they'd marched. Now bodies littered every square inch of the small corridor, the scent of fatality already rising from them.

Nine of his enemy had survived the attack. They'd already been stripped of their weapons, hustled into a corner and bound with rope. Most trembled in fear. A few had their shoulders squared, their noses in the air, hatred in their eyes, refusing to back down even in defeat. Damned admirable.

Too bad that bravery had to be quashed.

Brave men didn't spill their secrets, and Sabin wanted their secrets.

He was a warrior who did what needed to be done, when it needed to be done, no matter what was required of him. Killing, torturing, seducing. He didn't hesitate to ask his men to do the same, either. With Hunters-mortals who'd decided he and his fellow Lords of the Underworld made good whipping boys for the world's evil-victory was the only thing that mattered. For only by winning the war could his friends finally know peace. Peace they deserved. Peace he craved for them.

Shallow, erratic rasps of breath filled Sabin's ears. His, his friends', his enemies'. They'd fought with every ounce of strength they possessed, each of them. It had been a battle of good versus evil, and evil had won. Or rather, what these Hunters considered evil. He and his brothers-by-circumstance thought otherwise. "
