What Are Parasites?

Parasites are living creatures that vary in size, some are micro-organisms which are not visible to the human eye, others such as tapeworms for example can grow over ten metres long and weigh many kilos. Can you imagine playing host to one of those?

Parasites have a complex life cycle and each type of parasite can have varied effects on the human body. Throughout a typical life cycle, some forms of parasites will naturally move around the body from one organ to another depending on its own needs.

As parasites do not have a bowel of their own, they require a food source which is already predigested. Hence, why many forms are found in the bowel of humans like you and me.

Although there are thousands of known parasites, we will look briefly at the most common types which include; tapeworms, pinworms, hookworms and roundworms.

Where Do Parasites Comes From?

Well, literally everywhere! Food, water, animals, soil, and even plants.

Regardless of where they may have originated from, today's amount of international travel and the import and export of large quantities of food greatly increases our risk of exposure.

The bowel is usually where parasite infection will commence. Purely because they need the essential nutrients found in our bowels to grow and develop.

Popular Pinworms

Pinworms, often known as "threadworms" are the most common human parasites - particularly in children.
  • They can lay up to 15,000 eggs per day and approximately 500 million people are known to be affected worldwide.
  • The most typical sign of an infestation is itching in the anal area where the eggs hatch.
  • They will often cause restlessness at night when they come to the outer of the rectum to lay their eggs.
  • They can often be associated with irritability and behavioural problems such as ADD.
  • Their presence is implicated in serious nervous system problems.

Random Roundworms

  • Roundworms are easily picked up and present in contaminated foods or faeces.
  • Mature species can pass into the heart, liver and lungs and have a major impact on the immune system.
  • If present in the bowel, roundworms may cause stomach pain, constipation and/or diarrhoea.
  • If present elsewhere, they may cause eye pain or weakened immune system with allergies, wheezing, and coughing.
  • Roundworms grow up to 15 inches long and lay approximately 200,000 eggs per day.

Terrible Tapeworms

Tapeworms don't have a digestive system and rely solely on our bowel for nutrients. Recorded up to 10kg in weight and 10 metres in length, the tapeworm is amonths the largest known parasite.

They commonly come from contaiminated beef, pork or fish and live long, active lives.

Tapeworms are very significant as they are segmented, meaning the entire worm is made up of numerous detachable segments. Unfortunately for us, each segment has its own reproductive capabilities so when one becomes detached, there are now two separate tapeworms.

Mostly, there are no symptoms associated with tapeworms. A bad infestation, can result in upper abdominal pains, severe bloating and excess weight gain around the abdomin.

Due to their size, they require more nutrients leaving us craving foods and deficient in essential nutrients. This causes malnutrition, poor immune function and weight gain.

If you've tried to lose belly fat and numerous ways to lose weight and it still won't budge, regardless of the food or exercise levels then perhaps, you may be experiencing some other symptoms of parasite activity as well?

Hooked on Hookworms

Hookworms are more likely to be found in the tropics, however infection is not restricted to those areas only.

They pass through the skin, to the lungs where the host will cough them up and swallow them. They then reach their destination - the bowel.

Hookworms are extremely potent and can cause chronic weight problems and anaemia.

Acute cases may cause cardiac failure & death.

The Only Way To Optimize Your Weight Permanently
This is an excellent straight-to-the-point article that anyone trying to lose (or gain) weight should definitely read. The author, Dr. Pearsall, joined my clinic, The Optimal Wellness Center, in May of 2003, and she specializes in weight issues, diabetes and women's health here. She is also a co-author of my new book, Dr. Mercola's Total Health Program.

Dr. Pearsall is a naturopathic medical doctor who received extensive accolades in the southwest region of the U.S. for the real, and often dramatic, improvements people experienced through her holistic approach to health and healing, which you'll get a strong sense of in the piece below.

Obesity is not simply a matter of eating too much. Listed below are some of the contributing factors to excess weight: (includes Parasites)
Tale of the Tapeworm (Squeamish Readers Stop Here)
I found this article on Digg, originally published in the New York times about a jewish lady who enjoyed making special Jewish meals include gefilte fish. But she had not been feeling well for months: abdominal symptoms of cramps, distention and occasional diarrhea, associated with increasing weakness, shortness of breath, lethargy and fatigue. Her doctors were stumped.

Diagnostic Tests

How Do You Know For Sure If You Have Parasites?

Many symptoms associated with parasite activity can also be symptoms of a number of other ailments or health conditions. Because of this, some people like to obtain a proper diagnosis. So how do you go about a diagnosis for parasites?

There are a number of options, the most common including blood, stool and urine samples. Unfortunately, there are over 1000 varieties of parasites that we are aware of and not all of them will or can be detected from these kinds of tests.

Other simple tests your GP may perform are vaginal swabs or the very common tape test. The tape test is particularly common for children and detecting the pinworm. Quite simply, a piece of tape is placed over the anus and when removed, traces of eggs or other micro-organisms may be detected if parasites are present. A little invasive but no pain involved.

Maintain A Healthy Bowel

Tips - Nutrition & Prevention

For good bowel function it is necessary to eliminate parasites and their associated waste. (Remember, as parasites feed they also need to poop it out - inside of us).

This waste is called endotoxin waste which also adds to our levels of toxicity which in itself can cause enough problems.

Poor functioning of the bowels causes inflammation and "leaky" bowels. A leaky bowel causes toxins and poisons to be more easily absorbed.

Let's look at some simple ways we can maintain a healthy bowel.
  • Supplement your diet with high quality sources of fibre like flax seed, psyllium husk and slippery elm.
  • Slippery elm helps to relieve inflammation in the bowel.
  • Use lactobacillus to promote healthy bowel flora after the elimination process.
  • Nutrition is key in building a good, healthy immune system. Without supplementation, due to lack of essential nutrients in our foods we are opening the door to more parasitic infections.
  • Chronic bowel dysfunction and bowel disease is caused by nutritional deficiencies also. At the very least, add a colloidal mineral and multi-vitamin supplement to your diet. If you can add high powered antioxidants and EFA's you are doing great.
  • Nutritional deficiencies must be rectified once a parasite cleanse has taken place. Due to the parasite activity, your body will be feeling malnourished and reinfection is highly likely if the bowel remains unhealthy.
  • Tip - if you can maintain a healthy bowel, keep up the nutritional supplements and the immune system boosted, you will be less likely to play host to parasites again.
  • It's important to know that constant, re-occuring parasitic infections are likely the result of a poor or disfunctional immune system. Do a parasite cleanse and colon cleanse but make sure you boost the immune system.
  • Prevention is always better than a cure. Protecting the immune system is the best prevention.
  • Be cautious of the foods you purchase, particularly ready made foods from shops and restaurants.
  • As much as you may like sushi, it's probably one of the worst thinks you could eat.
  • Red meat is highly likely to contain parasites, it should be cooked thoroughly.
  • Where possible drink purified, filtered or at the very least, boiled water.
  • Pay particular attention to personal hygiene, always wash your hands after going to the toilet and before preparing food and eating.
  • Cysts and eggs are most easily spread in the bathroom or beds. Wash the bedding regularly in hot water and keep the bathroom clean.
  • Last but not least, purge or do some kind of parasite cleanse at least every 6 months - at worst yearly. Never leave it longer than that.

Black Walnut

Black Walnut is the most commonly used natural parasitic remedy. Effectively kills and eliminates parasites from the body. Relieves constipation, and aids waste elimination.
