My Lens About The Parasol

Why parasols? I like parasols. They seem so romantic! I like to pick topics for my lens that I don't think anyone else might have. They say parasols are making a come-back. They keep the sun off your delicate skin and celebrities are now being seen with them including an aide with Michael Jackson Who carried one for him! They make a beautiful fashion statement and bridesmaids are now using them in weddings. You can even make your own with your own fabric choice to match an outfit. Lots of period costumes out there nowadays, for such activities as re-enactments of civil war or for stage plays use a parasol, too! How about one with a period Halloween costume or at a little girls birthday or tea party?

Parasols on Wikipedia

:"Parasol" redirects here. For other uses, see Umbrella (disambiguation) or Parasol (disambiguation).

An umbrella or parasol (sometimes colloquially, gamp, brolly, umbrellery, or bumbershoot) is a canopy designed to protect against precipitation or sunlight. The term parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun, and umbrella refers to a device more suited to protect from rain. Often the difference is the material; some parasols are not waterproof. Parasols are often meant to be fixed to one point and often used with patio tables or other outdoor furniture. Umbrellas are almost exclusively hand-held portable devices; however, parasols can also be hand-held. Umbrellas can be held as fashion accessories.

The word umbrella is from the Latin word umbra, which in turn derives from the Ancient Greek ómbros (??????). Its meaning is shade or shadow. Brolly is a slang word for umbrella, used often in Britain, New Zealand and Australia. Bumbershoot is a fanciful Americanism from the late 19th century.WorldWideWords - Origin of the world "Bumbershoot"

Ever Hear of Parashells?

Interview With "Parashell" Designer

PingMag gets the back story on Tokyo-based Canadian expat John Di Cesare's Parashell umbrellas & parasols. Working with a 73 year old umbrella maker in Ome, near Tokyo, he prototyped an idea he had back in Canada based on the shapes and forms of sea shells.

In Japan, everybody and his uncle has an idea for a weird-shaped umbrella. Seriously, if you go to the patent office you see. So I think for them, they were just like, "Here we go, another guy with a weird umbrella idea."

We've seen a few asymmetric umbrellas to tackle fierce weather, this one's more of a well-made elegant accessory and given the increasing awareness of the sun's harmful damage, there's certainly a growing niche market for the parashell.

Great lens. Parasols do make a lot of sense in addition to being really pretty. I recall being in Arizona one spring and my little umbrella never left my side.

I love Parasols, always had one on our summer holiday to the seaside as a child. Then they went out of style. Now they have to comeback as the sun is dangerous and I happen to be photosensitive.

Thanks for the lens!

Fans of Perfect Parasols

12:00a.m. 11 June 2008

| By Amy Remeikis

In days past - when ladies were ladies and men were gentle, the humble fan had the power to tempt marriages and break hearts.

While it is unlikely that Victorian men understood all the rules of what is commonly referred to as the Language of the Fan, the fan and the parasol could be very powerful tools in a woman's seduction arsenal. A flutter of lashes over the lace of a fan, or the flirtatious twirl of a parasol could say a lot in a time when showing an ankle could have you banished to the country to wait out the scandal.

While society matrons would probably be in a permanent swoon at today's relaxed dress and etiquette, the fan and parasol have made the transition to 2008.

At least they have in Helene Duval's world. The Landsborough 65-year-old designs lace and embroidered parasols and has found a ready market in the bride-to-be and those looking for something different.

But in what would surely have secured her a voucher to Almacks in Lady Jersey's day, her reasons for creating such beautiful and whimsy objects are entirely practical.

"I'm too short for a hat and unless you are wearing a dress, you are always overdressed if you wear one with casual clothes," Helene said.

"But my work (as a marriage celebrant) meant I was standing in the sun for up to an hour and a half and I needed something to keep the sun off me.

"I went to a wedding expo and I saw a parasol at a photographer's stand and thought it was just what I was looking for. But when I asked her where she got it, she said, 'I wish I could get more. We just can't get them,' and I went home and decided that that is what I would do."

Helene found a supplier in Shanghai who would make her designs, and in just three months, she has sold more than 100 parasols. And the fan hasn't been forgotten, either. The delicate lace offerings are popular with brides looking for something different to carry.

"When a fan is decorated by a florist, they are just gorgeous," Helene said.

"The Sculptured Leaf florist created some to show me when I was creating my website. Eve Boutique provided the wedding dress and the whole ensemble was just beautiful.

"It's just something very different to introduce the bride as she walks down the aisle and is also lovely as something bridesmaids can carry."

But just like the parasol, the fans have found a practical market. "Rock 'n' roll dancing. It gets very hot and the ladies just dangle them off their wrists. It is very physical, so it's good for them to have something to cool themselves down with."

Helene believes that far from being a dying art, parasols and lace fan creations are actually on the up and up, something one could imagine the beau monde or Original of the noughties carrying on her arm.

"I think it is a new trend," Helene said. "It's something different for brides, but also for people who are fashion conscious and always looking for something new. And they want to be first. And really, they are just such great accessories under the hot Queensland sun."

And that's something even Lady Jersey would approve of.

Parasols: Unfurl a frilly new fashion accessory

Samantha Critchell | The Associated Press

Why waste a fashion-forward umbrella on a dreary rainy day? Instead call it a parasol and show off the beautiful colors, fabrics and embroideries that have become a part of umbrella design.

Sun umbrellas are enjoying a moment in the, er, sun. Parasols were on the runways for several spring collections, and celebrities, including Marcia Cross on the set of Desperate Housewives, have been photographed holding them.

It seems a growing awareness of the damage caused by the sun has helped make an old-fashioned affectation hip again.

For spring, Totes-Isotoner made satin sun umbrellas, sun umbrellas in Asian-inspired floral prints and sun umbrellas with bold graphics. They are parasols because they provide sunshade, but they're not the romantic and nostalgic lacy ones that people immediately think of when you say the word, says Ann Headley, director of Totes-Isotoner's rain-product development.

Those do exist, Headley says, just in a much smaller quantity.

Fashion designer Anna Sui makes a strong case for the parasol as an objet d'art. She has put them on the runway at least four times. A model matched her turquoise-and-black print blouse to her turquoise-and-black print parasol.

Tracy Reese and Temperley London also made style statements with parasols this season.

Sui works with a licensee to make umbrellas, and she says the parasols always sell out of her Manhattan store. She can't recall ever carrying one on the street, but an elaborate one from India with mirrors and appliques hangs in her bedroom.

It provides the necessary drama as a prop, but it's also a traditional sunshade, especially in India, China and Japan, as well as in the Old South, when the real-life equivalents of Scarlett O'Hara would use one to keep her skin from freckling, Sui says.

Cross, who is known for her porcelain skin, explains her use of a sun umbrella on the set: "I have moments when I can't wear a hat or if my hair is done. If they've done my hair, they're not thrilled if I throw my hat on," she says with a laugh.

Right now, hats and sunscreen are the core of Cross' sun-protection routine but she says a parasol "might be something in my future."

"I've seen people use the parasol and I think I might check it out," Cross says. "I was on a hike and saw an Asian woman with one, and she looked great."

And they seem to be gaining in celebrity appeal. Among the stars photographed with assistants holding umbrellas for them in the sun are Beyonc%uFFFD, Mariah Carey, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Michael Jackson. Rihanna even has a new umbrella (ella, ella) line for Totes.

The modern sun umbrella is coated with UV protection, blocking 98 percent of ultraviolet rays, Headley says. It also often has a waterproofing treatment so the umbrella can be used in the sun and the rain. "Most consumers, unless they're in a hot climate and find a parasol they love, they want an umbrella they'd want to use either way," she says.

Headley notes that dark umbrellas will do a better job blocking sunlight than a light-colored one if neither has the UV treatment. "It's just like a white T-shirt versus a black T-shirt. If you're in intense sun, the sun will get through light colors," she says.

She thinks you're seeing more parasols because of the increased awareness about sun damage to the skin.

"They're less and less a commodity. They're a real lifestyle thing these days. People look for function and fashion in their umbrellas," Headley says.
