I have a subscription to four different parenting and baby magazines: Parents, Parenting, Babytalk, and American Baby. This is my favorite. I seems to be the most informative and the topics are presented in Parents long before Parenting every gets around to it. For example, Parents had a indepth article on new discoveries in miscarriages and the following month parenting ran a similar article, but was not as informative and obviously was a steal from Parents. There are also great contest. There are also topics that parents can send in comments about and actually get paid for them if published. I really love this magazine because, first of all, I love Genealogy! And this magazine is a great source of information whether you are just starting out on your family search or if you've been hitting the archives for years.
And it is WEB oriented which is just what I'm looking for as I do a lot of research online. Family Tree Magazine always has new or important search tips. I learned to check characteristics of old photos for clues in narrowing a search for birth years when you don't have an exact date. I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 41/2 year old, they both love the magazine. It has characters that the kids know and are interested in. Lots of activities. My daughter went through the entire magazine in the first sitting and continues to go through it. The activities are right on target and don't frustrate her. I went to the bookstore and looked at all the magazines before I got a subscription. Some of the other mags have too many advertisements and are pushing their products. This has no advertisement pages in it. I liked the fact that it had activities that both kids were interested in doing. Counting and colors for 2 year old and writing and thinking skills for 4 year old. Highly reccommend. But, if you are looking for a subscription for your child, buy a few different single magazines for them to look at and see what they are interested in. I am a pediatrician with 2 ADHD children. Although I have alot of technical knowledge on the subject, I have found this magazine extremely helpful in terms of suggestions for problem-solving day-to-day issues, and keeping things in perspective (if they discuss the same problems we're having in a magazine, then the challenges my kids face and my less-than-perfect parenting are not failures of discipline and self-control- we're just part of the ADHD community!) Very straightforward, balanced, but mainstream viewpoint. Lots of practical articles about living with ADHD in all settings and behavioral/ cognitive interventions. Doesn't push medication, although it does provide information and tips on dealing with side-effects. Also light on coverage of alternative therapies. When I received my first issue of Adoptive Families Magazine, I could not wait to read it! It felt great to feel connected to many of the writer's stories. My husband and I are waiting for our first American,adopted newborn and this magazine continues to educate us on the adoption process. I recognize a few of the magazine's writers and advisory committee members attending their lectures and through books they have written. Also, there are diverse viewpoints and laws that appear to be changing due to this network. There weren't magazine like the "Old Schoolhouse Magazine" when I homeschooled in the 80s & 90s and did I miss out! Now, I get this magazine just to see what's going on in the homeschool world. Every time a new issue comes out I think, "This is just like a 'flu shot' for homeschoolers."
Each issue is jammed pack with what homeschoolers need to succeed: information, resources, and encouragement. You'll find articles on how to homeschool as well as testimonies of how others homeschooled. Your enjoy using the free unit studies included, learning about famous people to add to your homeschool curriculum, and even provide your children with simple art lessons from the magazine!
Going on a field trip? There's articles about field trips - what to do, where to go, or how to use a field trip as a learning experience. Homesteading? Read articles on topics such as how to make your own soap, how to make your own candles, or practical information for deer hunters.

n 1990 I started homeschooling my three younger children and continued on until they received their high school diplomas in 1998. For all but two years of that time, all of it as a snail-mail-dependent, pre-overseas-Internet military family in Europe, my regular homeschooling support was Home Education Magazine.
Although they didn't know it, the magazine's columnists and writers held my hand through my ups and downs, gave me ideas when I needed them, and reflected back to me many of my own situations but with a twist that always gave me insight. I found mailing information for catalogs from which to order our materials, and even a school for when the kids got into high school and we wanted transcripts and diplomas. Every two months the mail clerk delivered my homeschooling lifeline. Other magazines had information, HEM had heart.
For the two years when a support group was available, the magazine provided inspiration for the newsletter I produced, and is continues to do so now for my website.
The homeschool-support world has grown with the expansion of online connections and my kids are grown, yet my subscription continues. It just might come in handy with the grandkids. -- Valerie Bonham Moon (Not in the Alps, unfortunately)
