Parenting Tips on How To Tackle Stubborn Children

1. Be assertive
As a parent, you have to maintain a firm and yet gentle attitude when dealing with a stubborn child. When your child behaves well, you should encourage and praise him/her. But when the child misbehaves, make sure you don't change the rules. Rather be firm and tell them they will face punishment for any misconduct.

2. Maintain your cool
Shouting at the child will only make the matters worse. As parents, it is very important for you to remain calm, otherwise it will take much longer time for your child to see reason. No matter how badly the child behaves, don't respond by yelling. If you find it hard to maintain your cool, count 1 to 10 and take deep, long breaths.

When you finally regain your composure, then state your stand firmly to the child, mention the reasons for it and the consequences of misconduct. Don't argue or get angry. At times, when children don't face any opposition, they feel less inclined to rebel or act stubbornly to get your attention.

3. Listen patiently
You have to act responsible and be patient, when your child acts out. Tell your child that if he/she calms down, you are willing to listen his/her demands. This will make the child realize that you are ready to consider his point of views. Sit down with your child, and patiently listen to him/her without any interruption. When the child has finished speaking, put forward your point of view and very gently and calmly explain to them how his/her behavior is unacceptable. If the child apologizes, you must say thank him/her for that.

However if the child claims that he/she won't misbehave in the future only to get rid of punishment now; make sure you stay firm and tell them that fake promises won't work.

4. Don't be stubborn yourself
If you want your child to do something, don't demand that it should be done right away. For instance, if your child is watching his/her favorite movie, don't force him to start doing his schoolwork instantly. Instead give him/her a little time and suggest that he must start his homework after 10 minutes or after the show is over. Be reasonable in your demands and yet be assertive.
