Parenting a Gifted Child

I'm the feature writer for Parenting a Gifted Child at Suite101 and mother to three gifted children. I'm a recovering gifted underachiever myself, so as my kids navigate the school system it is all eerily familiar. After my experience, I knew my kids needed a strong advocate for their unique needs. So much has changed in gifted education. Unfortunately, so many misconceptions remain. Read my articles, blogs, and blurbs about parenting gifted children. Hopefully you can glean something of use to you and your child!

Is there such a thing as healthy perfectionism?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, perfectionism can be normal and healthy.

No, perfectionism is by definition unhealthy as perfection is impossible.

carlaboulianne says:

The terms healthy perfectionism and normal perfectionism are misnomers. Parents, teachers, and researchers commonly confuse a healthy strive with excellence with the negative condition of perfectionism. A gifted student who constantly wants to grow and do their best differs from the perfectionist with an all-or-nothing mindset and the mistaken goal of perfection. A perfectionist becomes hypercritical at the slightest error while a learner striving for excellence may suffer disappointment but uses setbacks as opportunities to learning. It is the negativity, self-criticism, and unrealistic goals that set a perfectionist apart, not the desire for excellence or order. Perfectionists are succeptible to depression and underachievement from self-imposed stress. Specific strategies can help a perfectionist moderate these traits and avoid the most critical damage of perfectionist thought processes.

Whole Grade Acceleration of Gifted and Talented Students

Should grade acceleration be a more frequent practice in public schools?

Whole grade acceleration, or grade skipping, of carefully screened gifted candidates is supported by research but often resisted by schools.

Should schools offer acceleration to more gifted students?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, you can carefully screen candidates to minimize negative outcomes.

Coral_Milburn_Curtis says:

Certainly - I run a global Learning Community for gifted children based at the University of Warwick in the UK. Our students join the community precisely because they aren't sufficiently stretched in school. It's not just a matter of keeping them occupied - it's all about self-belief and a feeling of belonging to a group of learners who have similar issues. Children need to belong to a peer group where it is 'cool to be bright'.

carlaboulianne says:

Using the Iowa Acceleration Scale, schools can carefully screen acceleration candidates. Acceleration shouldmore frequently used to meet the academic needs of strong candidates. Most educators' resistance to grade skipping is based on misconceptions. Gifted research demonstrates acceleration is a viable option, academically, socially, and emotionally.

No, enrichment and differentiation are enough.

Sarah says:

depending on the child. So many "gifted" children are academically ready but socially are not. While I agree children need to be challenged in the classroom, I don't think most children who are academically a whole grade level ahead are at the same developmental stage socially and/or emotionally as their academic peers. When differentiation and enrichment is done correctly and in the classroom it can create more of a safety net for the gifted child ~
