Barack Obama's father was Barack Hussein Obama born in 1936 and died in 1982. He was a Kenyan national and a senior governmental economist. Obama was born on the shores of Lake Victoria, Kenya to Hussein Onyango Obama and Akumu Habiba .
His family belongs to the Luo tribe. Obama grew up in Nyang'oma Kogelo, and was married at 18 in a tribal ceremony to Kezia. They had four children, two of them after he returned to Kenya from the United States. Due to a program offering Western educational opportunities to outstanding Kenyan students that was organized by nationalist leader Tom Mboya, Obama was awarded a scholarship in economics, and at the age of 23 he enrolled at the University of Hawaii . On 21 February 1961, Obama married a fellow student, Ann Dunham in Maui, Hawaii.Their son, Barack Obama, was born on August 4, 1961.

Ann Dunham the mother of Barack Obama was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (or Wichita, Kansas), in the year 1942. Her father was in the military during that time.Her parents,father Stanley Armour Dunham born on March 23, 1918 and died February 8, 1992. Her mother Madelyn Dunham was born in 1922 and raised in Augusta, Kansas and is still living in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Ann Dunham enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she studied anthropology. There she met Barack Obama, a graduate student from Kenya and the school's first African student, in a Russian language class at the University. When they became engaged, both sets of parents opposed the marriage, with Obama's father in particular objecting. Nevertheless, the couple married on February 2, 1961 in Maui, Hawaii, after discovering she was pregnant. On August 4, 1961, at age 18, she gave birth to her first child, named Barack Hussein Obama II.
