MY REVIEW
Chapters in this incredible book are written by a different parent who recounts the hell of living with a child who is an addict, the damage done not only to the addict but to the family as a whole, and sadly coping with grief after the death of their beloved child.
Parents recount the tales of living with an addicted child, run-ins with the law, brutal attacks, children stealing from their own families, and getting the phone call or knock on the door that no parent ever wants to experience.
These parents have reached deep down inside their souls and relived their tragic stories for several reasons - to save the lives of other children, to save other families from living the hell of a bereaved parent, and to make sure their children did not live and die in vain.
As they recount each stage of their child's addiction from beginning to self-medicate through holding their children as life support is turned off or having to learn their child died days earlier and was dumped in a vacant lot by their so called friends, you will feel the pain each parent experienced but you will also learn about the disease of addiction and how to help your child or loved one.
This book is a must read for parents, those in the medical fields, treatment fields, and even the addict in your life as well.

- Sherry McGinnis' trio of books are invaluable resources to all American families, clinics, schools, hospitals and college social work depts. One is about parent's gut wrenching stories of love and loss, another is a children's story told by a family cat, the other is an informative factual book with interview from researchers, advice from parents to children, parents to other parents, etc. Very unique books. It's a shame the big bookstores across the country won't display them on their shelves about a plague that is killing thousands all year long.

- Thank you so much! If we can all ask our school systems to include the "square cat" in their curriculum, then more and more children will learn about addiction. It isn't just about drugs. It's learning that drugs can lead to addiction, and that's the scary part.

- I have read all 3 of the listed books,& found them all very informative. If a person has no understanding of addiction other then the image they portray, this will open your eyes.Addiction is a disease,& the entire family is effected by this.
Square Cat is a must for younger kids. They need that message as early as possible.Every child should know the consequences of that 1st sip or puff. This book should be mandatory in every school library.
The parents in these books should be commended. They put their hearts & souls into each word.I know it's not easy having your child & family judged by others. If 1 kid reads this book & get something from it,1 family knows that pain,& gets the help they need, then it's so worth it. Knowledge is free.Spread the word & save a child.I wish I had a book like this 3 years ago,but like so many others,I didn't think I had a need for it.Thank you to every family that had the courage to share.

- I have read many, many books since I lost my son. This book is by far the most poignant book on the market. The stories are real. You begin to read, then you want to stop because of the heartbreak so eloquently expressed by these grieving parents, and you pick it right back up because it grabs you in a way no other book can do. Buy several copies and donate them to libraries, rehabs and treatment centers, and support groups like Narc Anon and Al Anon or any of the many groups out there helping people reach for recovery.
