THE MISSION OF THE BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS PAGE
Is Not To Sell You A Macaw But To Sell You ON A Blue And Gold Macaw
There are two sides to every Blue And Gold Macaw or of any Macaw. There is the cute, cuddly, playfull and amazingly affectionate side. The side that is almost irresistable for nearly everyone. There is then the side only true lovers of these birds can begin to tolerate. The loud noisy, messy, sometimes destructive often demanding nearly unrelenting time consuming side. The side that demands a lifetime devoted to basically a two or three year old child that will remain loud noisy, messy, sometimes destructive often demanding and unrelenting for the course of that lifetime.
If you are that rare individual who can give the love, time, devotion that these magnificent birds require. You will be rewarded with what is likely the most intense and quite likely the longest human/animal relationship on our planet. The relationship between a human and a Blue And Gold Macaw or any Macaw may be the most unique, rewarding and challenging of all human/animal relationships.

LIVING WITH A BLUE AND GOLD MACAW
Accepting You Live With Him Not Vice Versa
However and not unlike a child it is not all work and no play. The thing is. If you consider that time spent on and or with your companion bird to be anything but pleasure, something you must do in place of something you love to do. The fact is you are not yet ready for the lifetime experience of Macaw ownership.
Certainly there are those things you must do to care and own a Blue And Gold Macaw parrot.
- You must maintain his home (cleaning, feeding).
- You must do the shopping required to meet his needs.
- You must do the research. You must know how when where and what to do and not to do for your Macaw.
- You must have the financial resources to properly maintain and care for your pet.
- Time is critical. You must have the time and most importantly the need to own and care. Hopefully for a lifetime.
- Nearly as important as caring for your Blue And Gold Macaw is the ability to enjoy your companion. If you encourage him he will become your best and most treasured friend. He will never be unhappy or fail to greet you. It is said your best friend will bail you out of jail, maybe? A Macaw would go to jail with you if he could. Your Macaw cannot stand for you to be alone. He knows no matter what you maybe doing. You absolutely need his help. Given a choice he will go anywhere you want to take him and be happy with your choice. He doesn't have preferences about those things. He will never let you down. Above all else he will always be a Macaw parrot expect nothing more or less. He may have his moments but he will always be your best friend.

BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS ARE ROYALTY AMONG MACAWS
THE BLUE AND GOLD COLOR SUGGEST ROYALTY HIS PERSONALITY CONFIRMS IT
There are a multitude of reasons for the love and adoration people have for the Blue And Gold Macaw. One of the more notable reasons being the magnificent and exclusive blue and gold coloration. The white facial patch and its black feathers, his massive black hooked beak and black bib, including his emerald green crown being the only coloring aside from his beautiful blue backside and golden underside. The Blue And Gold Macaws coloring suggests he take his place as Macaw Royalty.
The Blue And Gold Is King
The Blue And Gold Macaws magnificent coloring is not the only reason for his popularity among those who love Macaws.
The Blue And Gold Macaw reproduces easily in captivity. Therefore he outnumbers his counter parts as breeders and as pets. His numbers and popularity make him generally the least costly of all the large Macaws. Don't allow that to fool you. In the truest sense of the word the Blue And Gold Macaw is a true bargain among the Macaws.
The Blue And Gold Macaw generally the slightly smaller of the 4 most popular large Macaws is blessed with all the less thrilling traits possessed by all Macaws. Like the others he is messy, can be excessively loud at times. He chews or gnaws no less than the others maybe more. The Blue And Gold Macaw is still a large Macaw and like the other Macaws requires a very large cage. Many, myself included feel he demands the most of our personal attentions. His need for attention is in his nature he cannot help himself.
The Blue And Gold Macaw also comes with all the socially redeeming traits Macaw lovers admire about the large Macaws. The Blue And Gold is, like all of the Macaws extremely intelligent. He is a playful fellow. Many believe he is the more affectionate and loving of all the Macaws both accepting and returning love and affection unconditionally. The Blue And Gold is inquisitive and very adapt at problem solving and a trickster at heart. Two traits making supervision very important. He learns to talk as well as any of the large Macaws.
The Blue And Gold Macaw despite his less costly price tag is everything anyone could ever want or expect of a Macaw. He is 100% Macaw through and through.
I love all the Macaws but my heart and recommendations will always go with the magnificent Blue And Gold Macaw.

Your Blue And Gold Macaws Cage Is Everything You Just Add Love And Commitment And Your Time
At this point we are going to assume you have decided and are committed to owning a Blue And Gold Macaw or a larger Macaw of another variety.Assuming You Have Already Done The Following
1. You are committed to a lifetime of care giving to your Macaw Fully understanding all the implications of doing so.
2. You have decided you have the room for a Blue And Gold or other Macaw parrot.
3. You have decided the noise is something you want to live with including family members. The noise will not bother your neighbors.
SEE TABLE CONTENTS FOR BLUE AND GOLD MACAW CAGES-TRAINING- TOYS- SUPPLIES- PRODUCTS For All Your Bird Needs
4. You have the time no less than 3 hours per day to spend playing and socializing with your Blue And Gold Macaw or other Macaw parrot. Your family members want to help with the care and particularly the socialization of the new Macaw.
5. You can easily afford the initial cost of acquisition for a large proper Cage.
Now that you and the family have made the necessary commitment. What is the next step? Now is not the time to go shopping for your Blue And Gold Macaw hopefully baby. First things being first your new baby Macaw needs a home, his own house, a cage.
In order to buy a proper Macaw cage measure the widest entrance into your home. If you buy a cage that does not come apart that will determine just how large a cage you can buy. You must also predetermine exactly where the cage will be placed.
Being frank with you my opinion is. A cage that will fit through the average homes doorway entrance is to small a cage for a large Blue And Gold Macaw. I would not advise anything smaller than 4x4x 6ft high and not round. Macaws have a need for corners. Being able to back into corners ads to their sense of security. A minimum cage such as 3x4x5ft can work if your Macaw basically only sleeps there. Do not buy your baby first and rush the cage buying process for I believe obvious reasons.
It is imperative that you buy the largest possible cage to be placed in a higher traffic area for socialization purposes. To small a cage may lead to behavior problems later such as screaming, plucking, aggression. Needing to be cheap with the cage is not likely to produce the results you want from your Macaw parrot.
Additional Considerations When Buying A Macaw Cage
1. Price will be determined largely by size and the building materials. Stainless Steel, Wrought Iron cages being the more common. S.S. Being the more expensive and less decorative material.
2. Matching room décor and the cage is important for many people.
3. A bottom allowing mess to fall through to a removable tray is great for the bird and makes cleaning easier for you.
4. Cage furnishings, foraging toys, perches, ladders, heavy ss bowls, swings etc are very important to a Macaws disposition.
5. A playstand for outside time is necessary.
6. A really good vacuum cleaner is a must.
7. Initial food and vitamin stocks.
The honest truth is. Failure on your part to provide an adequate cage and home for your Blue And Gold Macaw or any Macaw is very likely to undermine all the success you envision with your Macaw.
Simply be certain you are able to get his house right before you buy that precious baby. Only your time and commitment compares in importance.

BUYING A BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROT
Buy Your Blue And Gold Macaws Cage Before You Buy The Bird
1. You have purchased and stocked your new Macaws cage. You have opted for size over décor. The new Macaw has a complete functional household.
2. Don't buy the first bird you see. Try if at all possible to buy a baby or young Macaw. I suggest visiting a breeder if possible. Let that beautiful Blue And Gold Macaw pick you first.
3. If possible visit the bird each day at different times for at least 3-4 days. Is his behavior consistent. Is there chemistry going on? Do his eyes pin when you interact. (Expression of interest or excitement) Are his eyes clear? Visually the Macaw seems healthy. Eyes, wings, feet, no nasal drip, mandibles up and lower look fine. Is he fully weaned? By visiting your bird often during the weaning process at the breeders the day you finally pick him up you will not be a complete stranger. This lowers the stress level of all concerned and the birds too.
4. Some pet shops, many breeders offer certificate of hatch, DNA results. An Avian vets health certificate. Don't buy without a 7-10 day health guarantee. It is up to you to have the Macaw checked by a vet during that time frame.
The Blue And Gold Macaw is an amazing and wonderful lifetime purchase and commitment. Do this right and you will be rewarded over and over throughout that lifetime.

FACTS ABOUT BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS CONTINUED
What You May Or May Not Know About Blue And Gold Macaws But Should
Purchasing a cage to small for this large bird. Making this mistake is almost sure to lead to additional problems with a Blue And Gold Macaw. Some possible symptoms of to small a cage can be screaming and plucking. A to small cage leads to general unhappiness and stress and can manifest itself in many ways.
Failure To Maintain Proper Cage Conditions
Poorly kept cage conditions are another huge mistake. Please do not ever assume your Blue And Gold Macaw is not aware of his cage conditions. An uncleaned cage devoid of the necessary items like adequate and varied fresh food, clean fresh water, space, toys, wood to chew on, proper perches is very likely to lead to behavior problems.
Having An Avian Veterinarian Is Imperative
In all honesty you should have and before you buy a Blue and Gold or any Macaw selected an avian vet. I would not use a store suggested vet for this purpose. To much chance of one hand washes the other situations. Think discounts for referrals. After purchase the bird needs thorough checking to bind any guarantees of health. Refer back to the bottom of the introduction section of this site to find a local avian vet in your area.
Breeding
The Blue And Gold Macaw commonly mates once in life. The nest is found in a hole in a tree where the hen typically lays two to three eggs. The hen incubates the eggs for 28 days + or - a bit. The young chics fledge the nest ninety or so days from the hatching. Fledglings are young birds that have fledged the nest yet still require the care of adult birds.
Regurgitation
Have you noticed your Blue And Gold Macaw or any Macaw bobbing his head up and down like a prize fighter? Perhaps your bird even reguritated his food on you. That is a normal behavior stemming from both the desire to be fed or to feed. Often the hens will bob hoping to be fed by the cock but either can asume either role. The bobbing and regurgitation is normal behavior for Macaws and shouldn't be worried about. That is unless your bird is trying to feed you. If there is no mate handy it is quite likely the need to feed could make you a handy target.
Regurgitation is not the same as throwing up or vomiting. Vomit from your bird will have the odor of vomit and regurgitation will not. A bird vomiting is a sick bird. A bird regurgitating is just doing what his species does.
Pinning, What is it?
Eye pinning in parrots is the rapid dialating or flashing of the birds pupils. Parrots can exhibit emotion in different ways. Pinning is one of the natural behaviors allowing the bird to show emotion. Happiness, contentment, excitement, pleasure, curiosity and anger or aggression can fall in there too. He may even pin simply because he is happy to see you. It is natural and normal behavior. When my bird pins, my first reaction is to try and determine exactly why. It is almost ritual for him to pin the moment I open the cage door.
Obesity
Unless you are a bit of an expert or you spend a great deal of time around Macaws it is rather difficult to spot obesity with a bird. Just like us if your Macaw receives to little exercise and the wrong diet they can and do often become obese. It is the owners obligation to be sure the bird they care for receives more than enough exercise. That is not easy with a companion Macaw because most never really receive opportunities to fly. Flight helpes to curb obesity problems in birds. Seeds are high in fat and to many or a steady diet is terrible for your bird. Nuts are also high in fat. Both seeds and nuts should be fed sparingly.
Go Very Slowly When Introducing A Kid And Blue And Gold Macaw
You have a Blue And Gold Macaw! You also have a younger child! You obviously really would love for the two of them to bond. It would you know be very good for both of them. Your Macaw is gentle, friendly but realizing he is just a Macaw and could behave in a manner you wouldn't imagine.
Where do you start? You know that if it goes wrong the child could be seriously bitten, not likely you think but yes, there exists that possiblity. There is also a remote possibility the bird could be hurt too. The object is to prevent damage to each and still begin creating a bond between the two.
When I was faced with the above scenario I sat down and wrote out a plan. I have to believe every Blue And Gold or Macaw is different. I have to believe every child is different. Because of this there probably is not a completely wrong way to start nor a correct way to start. It is up to the primary to decide, taking both the bird and child into consideration. Preparing a plan is likely the best method to approach the situation.
Step one for me with a four year old child with exactly no knowledge of birds but who seemed fascinated watching Shadow and I play and carry on was to give her some knowledge just knowledge not immediate interaction. I began this by asking her to begin helping me meet Shadows' needs. I taught her how to clean his cage. How and when to feed him, changing his water etc. At first, the first week or ten days I took the bird out of the cage as she did her duty. She could actually enter the cage easily to get this done. It was funny watching the bird watch her. He did watch too, seldom averting his eyes. After a few days I noticed he wasn't so worried about her being in his cage, I let her do some feeding and watering with him in the cage and that went well. He sat there and watched her, venturing down to sampling food while she was still in his cage. So far so good for each of us.
Step two was to teach her a bit about Shadow himself. During the evening or whenever the opp was presented she would sit on the floor and watch us play. I would tell her and demonstate how he used his beak to test things and how it is a hand and not just to eat or bite. I taught her how I moved slowly, more slowly than necessary. I taught her how to pet him and not damage feathers. I played with his beak, feet, scratched his head and belly. Doing all slowly and deliberately. She sat far enough away the bird paid only fleeting attention at first. After a few days I asked her to sit closer right at my knee. Still we werent petting but she was learning. He wasn't worried about anything either. Again so far so good! We did this two or three days.
Next step was to get him to accept treats from her while she talked to him. This was easy. The first nut he saw in her hand and zip right down my arm and right to her. He took the nut gently and she didn't freak. We did this a few times each day for two or three days. By then when she sat he was excited to see her. So far so good.
Next was the first touch. I had her move from the floor on to the couch next to me and feed him his treats and talk. One would have thought they had known each other for years. Again so far so good. So well infact I decided that she should pet him. This first time I took her hand and helped her scratch his beak. Her eyes widened in pure delight. There was though a momentary look of concern when he first tested her fingers with his beak but all went well and from that point on they slowly bonded seriously enjoying each others company and attention. Shadow as often as not bypasses me and flys to her. Doing this enough I get jealous. (Not) Turns out I likely didn't need to go to all that trouble but I worry about things.
After a month or so I no longer worried. I didn't leave them unsupervised but I was tension free about their behavior. It was a great experience and I wanted it to be memorable for me and for the girl. By the time she was 6 maybe 7 I would come home late afternoons and the two of them would be napping on the couch. Shadow sound asleep on her chest or stomach.
That process started 27 years ago. Today my daughter has a Blue And Gold Macaw of her own. Shadow still goes a little crazy when he sees her. They are the very best of friends. Depending on the exact bird and child I would not hesitate to get them acquainted. It is a wonderful thing to watch and be a part of.
Who Should Own A Blue And Gold Macaw?
Who should own a Blue And Gold Macaw? The easy answer to that question is everyone. The honest answer to that question is. Only a select few have what it takes to own a Blue And Gold Macaw or any Macaw for that matter.
I say a select few mainly because parrot rescues are slap full of Macaws that somehow no longer fit in the owners plans, or their life. Maybe due to time constraints, economics, housing, lifestyle changes. The reasons list likely has no end to it. It is even likely in way to many cases that the novelty of owning a Macaw simply wore off.
The simple fact is to many people acquire Macaws and other large parrots as novelties and not as companions. To often they do not understand the needs these birds must have supplied to them by their owner. They only see what the bird can supply to them, not what they must supply the bird.
Owning a Macaw is not similar to owning any other pet. If viewed as only a pet maybe a dog should be purchased instead. Macaws should be viewed as companions not pets. As a companion more time, devotion, caring, loving, dedication, and commitment is automatically implied. With a Blue And Gold Macaw I can fully guarantee there are and will be challenges to be met not related in any manner to those of domesticated animals such as dogs or cats. Fail to meet and defeat those challenges and I can fully guarantee neither the bird or its owner will end up happy campers.

MORE TID BITS AND BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS INFORMATION
No doubt noise is the single most annoying problem for not only new owners but owners period. The Blue And Gold Macaw in particular is considered by many to be noisiest of all the Macaw parrots. This likely stems from his being a large flock bird and needing to communicate across miles of jungle with both his mate and other members of his flock. He is naturally communicative several times daily. Beginning around sun up, noon and evening follow. This is natural and normal for the Blue And Gold and cannot be stopped. Several times throughout the day he will call out to place mates and flock members, also normal and natural. By keeping him happy, busy, well fed, in large clean cages with fresh water along with being involved in the family life it is possible to hold the noise to more acceptible levels. You shouldn't attempt to stop that which is normal and natural for the Macaw.
2. BITING
Biting is with well cared for and properly socialize Macaws less of a problem. However it is a problem that does crop up occasionally with Blue and Gold Macaws as well with the other Macaws also. Biting generally occurs when the bird is frightened, as in new owners, places, situations. Time and social activity will often put an end to biting due to fear. Some Blue And Golds tend to get a bit aggressive during the mating season or upon reaching sexual maturity. It is not a time to give up handling and socializing but to increase those activities. Boredom, poor housing and diet, illness or just poor health due to neglect can also lead to a biting Macaw. Overall neglect of the bird is often the leading causes for a biting Macaw.
3. TO LITTLE TIME
Blue And Gold Macaws are attention hogs. They require constant interaction with their owner to be happy. Sorry, I misled you there. Blue And Golds more than other Macaws demand your attention. They and Macaws in general do not do well if they are put on a shelf to long and to often. Macaws subjected to a lack of interaction with their owners are prone to pick up every bad habit, from screaming, plucking, to biting. No less than three to four hours of daily interaction or socialization is pretty mandatory. Most days my Blue And Gold is out and with me eight or so hours. Be certain your lifestyle wll permit this time before starting a relationship with any Macaw.
4.THE BLUE AND GOLD MACAWS DIET
There is just a lot of information on the web about Blue And Gold Macaw diets. Properly feeding a Macaw is not difficult to do. However there are foods they shouldn't eat and foods that could cause illness or death. A good pellet mix, some seeds, some nuts, lots of greens and fruits, including much of what you eat. Pasta, occasionally a taste of flesh/meat. The easiest way to get a good grasp of proper diet for a Blue And Gold Macaw is to learn what you should not feed to your macaw. Avocado for instance can kill a bird. Other foods are not good in quantity. Processed human foods (canned should be avoided or severly limited) so forth so on.
5. DO BLUE AND GOLD MACAWS MAKE GOOD PETS?
The short answer to that question is. Providing a person is cut out to own a Blue And Gold Macaw in the first place, then there is no better companion of any kind. Lifetime companion is a better term. The word pet simply sells the Blue And Gold Macaw short. If you take the time to teach him he will even greet you in your own language. He will want to be with you every minute you allow it. He will cuddle if you want. He will preen you. He will try to feed you. He wants you to teach him. He wants you to give him things to figure out. Sometimes he can be so happy to see you his cheeks will blush pink for you. If you pay attention even his eyes will scream hello to you. Heck most Blue And Gold Macaws want to learn to take a shower with you. The list of good things is almost never ending. Don't confuse him with just a pet, no. He is by any stretch of the imagination not just a pet he is a lifetime companion. It doesn't get better than that.
6. LOVE THE BIRD RESPECT HIS BEAK
I read an article or comment the other day by a young lady claiming her or a Macaw bite fractured her wrist. Hard to imagine but the strength to do that is there in the beak. My bird "Shadow" can handle brazil nuts without my help, thankfully in 32 years he has never bitten me or anyone else. It is easy if you've been seriously bitten to fear a Macaws beak. There are methods to avoid serious bites when handling Macaws that or may bite. First don't offer a bird you do not know or trust your digits. Fingers generally suffer the worst bites when a for real bite is delivered. To see what I mean by not offering a digit. Watch this video to see the proper method with a Macaw you do not know or yet fully trust.
7. MISSING IN ACTION
Those in the know (Nautralists) believe the only Macaw not on the endangered species list in the wild is the Blue And Gold Macaw. They cite several reasons Macaws in general and overall are suffering a decline in numbers. Most of those in the know believe that it is the reduction in forestation providing less suitable trees for nesting coupled with the poor attempts at regulating the pet trade. Incidentally the deforestation problem also can lead to shortages in specific needed food sources for certain Macaw family members.
8. The Blue And Gold Macaw, Natures Chic Magnet
lol ok, For you girls you could care less, However my guess is a Blue And Gold Macaw on your shoulder would work really well to. I mean with the guys too. My Macaw "Shadow" managed to get me married twice. The second one for 20 years more or less. I blame him totally for both marriage and maybe for the first wifes divorce. Guys if you don't believe me about the chic magnet just take a Macaw any Macaw down on the beach like I do. I promise you won't be alone long. I'm sixty three and still get surrounded by the youngsters. I just know better than to try and take it serious. Promise it works better than a puppy. Every dude on the beach has a dog. You'll stand out heads and shoulders with a Blue And Gold Macaw on your shoulder.
9. Bathing And The Blue And Gold Macaws
If you're a bringing a baby Macaw into your home you may need to teach them to bathe. Do not force this upon the young bird. Use a spray bottle that will give him a fine mist and mist him from over head, not directly at him. You don't want his first experiences to frighten him. Being from the rainforests the Macaw is used to bathing regularly and should easily adapt to bathing for you. Often it takes some experimentation to discover your Macaws favorite means of bathing. Some prefer a large dish or pan to bathe in. My Macaw loves to shower when I do. I allow this up to 3 times a week. He spreads his wings and struts his stuff on the tub floor all the while saying WEEEEEE!
10. Your Blue And Gold Macaws Dishes
Here is just a tip, Many people do this some of us may never think about it. Your Blue And Golds water dish should be changed and washed twice a day normally. His bowls for fresh fruits and or greens should be changed and washed daily also. With this in mind it is easier to have two sets of bowls for your Macaw than it is to fetch the bowls from his cage, empty them then clean them. With two sets you just replace each bowl restocked and remove the old bowls then empty and clean them. Much easier and faster time savings.
11. Your Blue And Gold Macaws Toys
Blue And Gold Macaws, maybe moreso than other Macaws need mental stimulation. Your time and your Macaws toys is where that stimulation should come from. Concerning his toys they should be many and should be varied. Emphasis should be given to foraging toys and not simply sqeaky or squawky toys. Foraging toys help insure your Macaw will have some time consuming, yet rewarding problems or puzzles to solve. You should have enough different toys that they can be recycled every week or so. One group of toys taken out cleaned inspected for damage and replaced with another group of toys. 3-4 and over time more groups of toys would be great. Safety says throw away or repair damaged toys, Macaws can easily damage some toys. With the correct type and number your Macaws alone time should not depress him. He will receive the correct mental stimulation and be rewarded for his puzzle and problem solving abilities.
Deciding The Best Macaw Or Parrot For You.
This site is about Blue And Gold Macaws primarily, Macaws in general. That does not mean a Macaw is the best choice for all individuals. I would suggest a great deal of research before settling on the best bird for yourself and or family. There are many smaller parrots (Mini Macaws) Amazons, Cockatoos that make excellent companions while preparing to own a full sized Macaw. Just commiting to the lenght of life is a difficult thing to do without the actual physical care taking. The bird a person actually ends up with is a matter of personal choice and preferences. Simply because one individual is in the situation and posesses the knowledge and desire to own a large Blue And Gold Macaw does not mean everyone else should or has a similar ability and actual desire. Frankly if one doesn't have a burning need to commit to a large Macaw it may be best for the bird not to!

Your New Bird First Things First
Hopefully the new bird you have just brought home is tame and gentle and immediately you can handle him. Hopefully he loves to be handled. If so you must continue handling consistently, constantly as much as is possible. Its good for you and good for the bird. It aids in quickening the birds bonding with a new owner, place, situation, surrounding. Getting to know each other is an important first step. Don't immediately begin to rush training and tricks. Work really hard at establishing a permanent bond with yourself and others in the family. Macaws live a very long time there will be plenty of time to train and teach. The personal bonding will make training and teaching far easier for both the bird and owner.
Blue And Gold Macaws Are Flock Birds
The Blue And Gold Macaw is a flock bird so they should be raised to be one of your flock. Each person in your family ideally should have a relationship with the bird. Macaws across the board are intelligent birds with a need to be with others. Great pains should be taken from the earliest of ages to be sure all members of his flock play an important part in his life. Don't think for a moment he doesn't know who feeds him, waters, teaches, plays, or cuddles him. He knows! Don't be afraid to introduce him to your neighbor or simply family friends and again the sooner the better and more the merrier. Done carefully and consistently you will be amazed at how well a Macaw will respond.
The Keys To Training Your Blue And Gold Macaw
Training your Macaw means getting the behavior you desire in your bird. Training should not begin day one. Training should be fun for both you and your bird. Once begun training should continue until it produces the desired results. Consistency, continual and constant are key to training any bird. Don't jump from one prodecure to another. Doing so will only slow the process of learning new things. Stay focused on one training, get results before introducing new training.
1. You should be calm and relaxed when training your bird. Macaws easily pick up on moods.
2. Know precisely what you want to establish with a particular bird and stay with it till you get results before changing to another trick.
3. You must be patient making everything fun and rewarding for the bird. Maintaining both your interest and the birds interest is important.
4. Using your birds favorite treats will help keep his interest and attention.
5. Get the birds full attention before training, Don't interupt his other activities such as eating or playing. Train in the same place, parrot gym or a particular table helps get his attention.
6. Training should be in short sessions, He wants to learn but remember he is a toddler and can be easily distracted so short sessions several times a day will work best.
7. Remove distractions if possible. Turn tvs, radios, music off. Train in the same location, Use treats for rewards. Being alone with the bird is important this includes family, pets, other birds. All of those will distract and slow the training process.
Why? The Blue And Gold Macaw For Your Pet
Why would one choose the Blue And Gold Macaw Parrot to be their choice for a household, family pet? The answer for me is quite easy. I love birds, any shape and or flavor, the larger the better. The Blue And Gold while not the largest is rather large. Then there is the coloring, All my life I have loved the color combination of blue and gold. So it follows that I should be naturally drawn to the Blue And Gold combination in my choice of favorite Macaw parrots. I'm certain there are others, many who prefer the majestic coloring as opposed to the brilliant reds, greens, blues, yellows found in the other Macaw parrots.
There is then price. Normally the b&g is less expensive, likely due to the ease of and success of breeding. There is also no doubt when brought into the home that the b&g is all, 100% Macaw parrot. Though each specie of Macaw is in nature a bit different, they are all Macaws with many of the same traits good and not so good. It is though the Blue And Gold Macaw that tends to posess a bit more of all the traits people find appealing.
There is no doubt he is every bit as intelligent if not more so. He is every bit as loving if not more so. He generally appears more pleased to see and interact with his owners. He gives the impression of being a tad more interested in people. In fact if there has been proper bonding and socialization he wants to be and do everything you do. He is seemingly convinced he can be completely helpful. True or not he believes it.
Without a doubt he seems to be the nosiest of the Macaws. He doesn't miss a thing you do. The b&g is gregarious to a fault. He is truly a natural people pleaser. He is also seemingly the most overall affection loving, showing, giving Macaw and maybe the easiest to train and work with. On the kinda downside he is always without a doubt the most demanding of time and attention. That is hands down. He is for me at least the epitome of the "Companion Birds"!
Blue And Gold Macaw Parrots Are Simply Fun
Actually all Macaw parrots can mean fun is coming our way. Mainly because all Macaws and to the varying degrees determined by the individual birds nature. Owning a Macaw is simply fun, a lifetime of entertainment.
Macaws are so intelligent and gregarious they simply cannot be ignored. Macaws especially the blue and gold Macaw will endeavor to become an integral part of whatever you may be doing at the time.
This particular little piece of writing is gonna take me far more time than necessary. Shadow is helping. I'm certain he believes he can do this better than me.
There are some things here on the desk he can get into that he shouldn't so naturally I need to keep shooing him one direction or another. We are both real used to that. He helps alot all day long.
It isn't just typing he helps me with either. When preparing dinner he separates the chopped veggies and samples them just to be sure they will be good for me.
He monitors my coffee cup too. He grabs the edge trying to tip it over, I suppose for no other reason than to give me something to watch over.
Mostly he is fun because no matter what we do together I can never forget he is a Macaw. When that happens he will do something to remind me.
Who Should Not Own A Blue And Gold Macaw?
Who should not own a Blue And Gold Macaw or actually any bird? That is actually a fairly easy question to answer. Summed up the answer is most people should not own a Macaw or any bird for the matter. Prospects must learn and understand owning a bird and the larger the bird the more unique and amplified are the problems associated with that ownership. Birds come with an entirely different set of problems than say dogs or cats and fish. It is those differences that make owning a bird in the least far more challenging. BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS OF BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS
Blue And Gold Macaw Behavior Problems Mostly Caused By Humans
Blue And Gold Macaw ProblemsLife with a Blue And Gold Macaw I wouldn't trade one minute of life with my Macaw. I had worked in an aviary and knew a bit about Macaws. How to care for them, a great deal of what I could and should do and what I couldn't and shouldn't do with them. I fell hard and fast for Macaws so I understand peoples desire to keep them.
Bad Behaviors Are Learned And Learned From Humans
For the inexperienced life with a Blue and Gold can be overwhelming. There is simply so much to learn about these animals. Mishandled that sweet, gentle, loving, playful and affectionate baby Macaw you brought home can turn into a raging beast in a very short period of time. Remember Macaws have their natural traits and behaviors but bad behavior they learn from us. For the average person just their normal and natural behaviors can be more than they can cope with. The noise, gnawing-chewing and near constant need of attention for the inexperienced quickly separates the wanna be from those who completely commit to their pet. The inexperienced without meaning to often are the root cause of all the problems they are having with their Macaw.
Unless your Macaw is a hand me down or inheritance the acquisition and household set up is not a cheap proposition. Why would anyone make such an investment without the knowledge it will take to achieve success. For those without the necessary knowledge or desire to acquire the necessary knowledge, for both the Macaw and owner the relationship can be horrific. For those who will take the necessary steps, acquire that knowledge the relationship between bird and human is an absolutely heart warming experience and relationship.
In the case of buying a hand fed baby in good health virtually all behavorial problems people have with Macaws are inadvertently caused by the caretaker. For the most part they have no idea they may be teaching their bird behavior which at first is believed cute but will lead to a problem shortly. There really is a fine line with Macaws. A simple game like grabbing your finger with his beak could teach a Macaw that you are afraid of his beak if he isn't permitted to grab hold everytime. Giving him a treat when he is noisy to quiet him down will teach him noise leads to treats.
Never underestimate his abilities to associate. The Blue And Gold Macaw is an absolute master with that game. What you do and what you do not do and when you and when you don't do it will have a huge impact on how your Macaw turns out. Not knowing what you are doing can destroy any chance of a meaningful and pleasant relationship. Everything a Macaw does short of his natural and normal traits is on us as owners.
Because of the Blue And Gold Macaws ability to associate we have a weapon to help insure his behaviors don't get out of line. Food and treats and his keen ability to associate behavior with the food and treats can get us the behavior we want and need. Using the reward of food and treats bad behavior can be eliminated. That is bad behaviors and not his normal behavior. It is still up to us to know exactly how, when and where to institute the rewards to get what we want not what he wants. The Macaw is smart if given the opportunity the Macaw will get from you what he wants. If you don't believe this or understand this I guarantee your relationship is not going to be what you had hoped for.
The Blue And Gold Macaw is an attention hawg. He wants, craves your attention. He wants it all. He wants it and wants it when he wants it. He has no concern as to whether or not you wish to give it. He wants your attention every bit as much as he wants your treats. If he learns excessive abnormal noise will get your attention good or bad he will learn to make noise. He will use your emotions and lack of knowledge, understanding, and patience against you. Imagine if he believes you are afraid of his bite.
Newly hatched Blue And Gold Macaw babies do not come into this world with behavior problems. They do however come with some normal and natural behaviors and traits ordinary people find very annoying. Once you have brought that sweet baby Macaw home it is your knowledge and decisions or the lack there of that determines the depth of the relationship. Acquiring the knowledge it takes will make all the difference.

Caring For A Blue And Gold Macaw Isn't Difficult. That Doesn't Make It Easy
Having A Child Or Buying A Blue And Gold. About the same thing!
Just as there are differences between Great Dane dogs and the tiny Chihuahua there is a difference between parakeets and the large Blue And Gold Macaw Parrot. However the progression from parakeet owner to owning a large Macaw parrot seems a natural one. Not everyone will make the progression but many will or will wish to. Most will realize long before hand they cannot make the commitment necessary to keep a Blue And Gold Macaw. The final commitment and decision to own a large Macaw of any kind is certain to be a life altering decision not at all unlike adding a baby to the household.
Questions you should ask yourself well prior to making a commitment to owning a Blue And Gold Macaw or any other Macaw parrot.
1. Do you have time to interact daily with your Blue And Gold? I have found it is impossible to have to much time for a Macaw!
2. Do you have room for such a large bird? The Blue And Gold requires a large cage. Can you be certain your Macaw will get adequate sun light?
3. You understand that birds are noisy and quite messy. You and your family are committed to the daily upkeep of your Macaw. You understand a large Macaw of any sort is going to be noisy and could influence not only you and your family but those neighbors around you.
4. Most importantly you understand that owning a Macaw is not a ten or fifteen year situation. It is a long term lifetime commitment. There is a very real possibility a Macaw will out live you. Given excellent care 50 years together is not unrealistic.
If you can truthfully answer the above questions emphatically yes. Then there may be a life experience awaiting you and your family that far to many people will never ever enjoy. Not owning my Blue And Gold Macaw for the last 32 years is something I hate to even think about.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PERCHES FOR YOUR BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS CAGE
Don't Scrimp On Perches When You Buy A Blue And Gold Macaws Cage
Don't Make Me Tell You My Feet Are Killing Me
Birds spend the vast majority of their life on their feet. The feet are the Macaws hands along with a means of transportation. In the wild birds have an endless choice of where to stand. They have far fewer choices in the cage kept in your living room. What they have in the wild are options so what you must give your bird in captivity is options. It is difficult to be loving or affectionate when their feet hurt from improper care.
In the wild where they perch will consist of tree branches of many different sizes and shapes. These branches are not uniform in their circumference nor their type. Some will be hard woods some not so. The bird will need to grasp each branch differently from branch to branch and also as the bird goes along each branch. The circumferences will vary from spot to spot. Wild birds are not confined to one size and type of perch. The captive bird should not be either.
Ideally perches would be mostly tree limbs. Reality is people are not always able to provide natural limbs for the majority of their birds perches. Mostly they are forced to purchase the wooden dowels sold in most pet supply stores. The dowels as perches are perfectly fine. It is up to the owner to understand that if they need 4 perches each perch should be of a different circumference. This gives the captive bird a few options to choose a comfortable spot to sit and each perch presents a need for a different grasp for his feet.
Pay attention to your Macaws feet when sitting on his perch. If the birds feet wrap around the perch so that the toes touch the perch is too small. That doesn't mean it should be removed but maybe the location changed where it is less used or used mostly for climbing.
If the birds feet are flat on a perch the perch is to large and like the small perch should be located in another place in the cage.
Somewhere between to small and to large so that the birds nails embed around the vertical center line of the perch should work fine. Hint: Old baseball bats taken down to the natural wood make tremendous perches. They are varied and very hard wood.
Watch where your bird sleeps. Make sure that perch is a good fit. If not change it and move the original to another location. If the bird ignores the newer perch and moves to the older perch then for whatever reason it for that bird is likely more comfortable.
Concrete perches have their place and will help keep the toenails filed. Remember however concrete is not a naturally normal place for a bird to perch. Having a concrete perch in an out of the way location is perfectly fine providing there is an abundance of natural surface perches available.
Remember above all, like the birds in the wild you want to provide options and the more the merrier. You don't want to clutter the cage and create an environment that could jeopardize the bird but room permitted the more options the better.
Arthritis Is Crippling And Not Just For Us Humans.Take The Time To Provide Options With Your Perches.
PROTECTING YOUR COMPANION BLUE AND GOLD MACAW PARROTS FUTURE IS A MUST
Your Blue And Gold Macaw Is So Loving And Affectionate And Is Very Likely To Outlive You. Then What?
For many people it is the beauty of these animals that first attracts them and that is completely understandable. For most of us the beauty is irresistable. The Blue And Gold Macaw is a very large bird and once you've seen one the bird cannot be easily forgotten.
Once you spend time with a Blue And Gold Macaw and you bond with the bird. The beauty like that of a mate becomes oh! so! secondary. There is so much more to a Macaw than beautiful feathers. Macaw parrots are not just another pretty face!
What many do not understand is the individuality and intelligence, capacity they have to give and receive love and affection. Like people each one is a bird of a different feather. Each Macaw comes equipped with their very own personal drum and are very ready to beat it.
Blue And Gold Macaws are lovers and almost cannot stand to be ignored or kept out of the family loop. They seek affection and return it just as well. There are those birds who are loners more or less, they seem to just put up with you. There are those birds who want to be agressive and test their owner frequently biting and nipping particularly if they get the results they want. The thing to remember is each Macaw is unique and marvelous in its own way.
As a bird owner it is up to you to discover your birds personality and make the absolute best use of it. Just as a human most birds traits that are not appreciated can be changed, eliminated or curtailed with training and simply caring and loving your bird. Some more easily than others but changed nonetheless. It is simply amazing what a bird can be taught. Even more impressive is what a bird can figure out all by their lonesome.
Be Smart! Put Him In Your Will I Did
For those who may see a large Macaw in their future there is one very important aspect that needs to be pointed out and addressed. Some birds live well in excess of 40-50 years. Dog owners for example understand that they are very likely to outlive their animal of choice. They prepare mentally for that dark day when the animal is lost. Most of us understand how difficult the loss of a family pet is. Few ever stop to consider how difficult losing you would be for a parrot. Imagine how your loss would affect your 2-3 year old child. There is not a great deal of difference.
Assuming excellent care, good genetics and barring no accidents your new Blue And Gold Macaw parrot could live easily to be 40-50 y.o. and even older. Just as a dog owner knows and understands the life span of their pet so must the owner of a Macaw. All bird owners should act with that understanding.
Simply put if you are an adult even a young one. There is an excellent probability the Macaw you choose could certainly outlive you. I honestly believe that for the good of a bird that you love and in return loves you. Some plans should be laid in advance. There for me is nothing sadder than a beautiful well trained and affectionate Macaw that must either be sold or given away to total strangers. Even bird rescues, bless them are not optimum for your bird.
Suggestions to help guarantee the future of your Blue And Gold Macaw should the need arise.
1. Make certain if you have an immediate family that your bird is socialized and has a satisfactory relationship with each family member. Be sure all or at least someone knows how to care for the bird and wants to do so.
2. Decide who has the most loving two way relationship with your Macaw. Make it known on paper who you want to have the responsibility to take over ownership.
3. Take the time to socialize your bird with friends and family members including kids and grand kids. Protecting your bird takes going out of your way, spending your time to be absolutely certain your bird will not suffer should your time on earth come to an end.
Just consider your Blue And Gold Macaws care and its future and do your best to insure the remainder of the birds life is with somone the bird knows and shares affection. Your Macaw will thankyou and so will I.
Yeah! I know Leaving A Parrot In A Will Might Sound Silly To Most Folks.
