What Kind Of Bird Cage Is Right For Your Parrot? Should You Own a Parrot? Exotic Bird Pictures!

Ranked #787 in Pets & Animals, #21,410 overall

What size of Cage is right for my Parrot?

The right size of bird cage for your exotic bird or as I like to call it, your companion, depends on the size of your bird! There are many sizes of cages for birds, and a big range of prices also, depending on the size, brand, how durable it is! Cages can range from just $15.00, and can go up to a few thousand dollars and more! I hope this page informs you well on what is right for your friend.

What Size of Cage is Right for my Exotic Bird?

*So what size of cage is right for your new friend?

Well I have to agree with the experts on this one. You should buy as large of a cage as you can afford! However, as I said, cages can be expensive! My recommendation, if you can't spend a lot of money is to make sure the cage is big enough, so that the tail of your bird does not touch the bottom of the cage, or the side of the cage while sitting on a perch. The width at minimum should be at least one and a half (1 1/2) times the width of your birds wingspan! You know how good it feels when you stretch just before you go to bed, or right after you wake up? Yeah it feels good doesn't it! Well remember, your bird wants to stretch too, and needs the room to do this!

Another point when picking out a cage is to note the spacing between the bars on the cage! If the spacing to much, your bird could escape, or worse, stick his head through and become stuck. However, if the spacing is not far enough apart, your poor little bird won't be able to see out, nor will you be able to see in. So keep reading for the bar spacing recommendation!

*Bar Spacing Recommendation on Your New Bird Cage

Up to a maximum of 1/2" for the following birds...

*Parakeet or Budgie
*Canary
*Doves
*Finch
*Lovebirds

Medium Birds need 5/8" to 3/4" Bar spacing and include these birds

*Cockatiel
*Conure
*Quaker
*Parrotlet
*Lory

Large birds need 3/4" to 1" of bar spacing, and include the following birds

*African Grey
*Small and medium Macaws
*Cockatoos-umbrella and goffin
*Amazon

Really BIG birds need anywhere from 1" to 1 1/2" bar spacing! These HUGE birds consist of the following

*Cockatoo-such as the Moluccan
*Blue and Gold Macaw
*Scarlet Macaw
*Green Wing Macaw
*Hyacinth macaw

Okay, now we have the size of the cage, and the bar spacing down, but that isn't all there is to it! We still have one more thing to talk about on the cage for your new friend! The Bar Gauge! Don't know what the bar gauge is? Well Bar Gauge is basically the thickness of the bars on the cage! Because these bars are so tiny, we will measure them in millimeters!

*Small birds require 2mm or less.

*Medium birds require 2.5mm.

*Large birds require 3.5mm.

*Extra Large birds require 4.5mm or more of Bar Gauge.

Why is bar gauge important?

Bar Gauge is very important because if you don't choose the correct size and you have a large bird, but 2mm gauge, that large bird will bite right through the bars and escape! Then you get to have fun cleaning up the mess when you get home from work!

Please, before you buy a pet bird, make sure you have enough money to buy it a proper cage!!!

Do I Really Need to Cover My Birds Up at Night?

What is best, cover up a parrots cage at night, or not? Well if you want the quick answer, it depends! Do you like that answer? Probably not....But there is a reason why I say it depends. Just like humans, some birds can sleep through anything! Like me, an atom bomb could hit outside my house and I probably wouldn't wake up! However, other birds, just like humans, are very light sleepers and the slightest noise will wake them up.

How much sleep does a typical pet bird need, and how about an answer to that cover question!

The answer may surprise you! The typical bird needs about 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. That may seem like a lot, but if you have cat, it's not really that much. As I said earlier, I do own a cat, and she sleeps darn near 18 hours a day if not more! So 12 hours for a bird isn't to bad!

Okay, now getting to that, does my bird need a cover, question! Personally I do not cover my birds at night. They do not like the cover! And where
I live there isn't that much noise. We live out of town and away from the city, so they sleep soundly every night. They are also full of energy during the day. However, if you have a lot of traffic in your house, or a lot of noise, inside your house or outside, or lights on during all hours of the night, I recommend you cover the bird(s) up! When you cover a bird up completely, they think it's nighttime and time to go to sleep, and they will usually ignore all outside noise! Also, if your bird is sluggish and sleeping all day, then that should tell you, "HEY, I didn't get much sleep last night!" And you should cover the poor bird up! Remember, they need 12 hours of sleep!

Should I Even Own or Buy a Parrot?

This is a very important question you need to ask yourself before you make your purchase. It upsets me when people just go buy an animal, and decide they can't make the commitment. So it ends up at the pound, in a shelter, or just let go and left to fend on its own!

If I buy a bird, will it really outlive me?

This is why you have to ask yourself, am I ready to make a life long commitment to this bird? And it won't be "just a bird," it will be your new companion. To answer the question, your bird may outlive you, depending on what you get! Exotic pet birds live anywhere from 10 years, up to 100 years and more! Your typical Parakeet will live about 15 years. However, if you are looking for a Cockatoo, or a Macaw, you ARE making a life long commitment! These large birds live to be an average of 60 to 70 years old, some up to 100 and beyond!

Am I really ready for a pet bird?

This is a question you have to answer yourself. Committing to a pet bird, is almost like committing to have a baby, and take care of that child, except this child will not grow up and move out! It will stay with you forever, and you will be paying out of your pocket for its food, shelter, and upkeep for its entire life! So make sure before you purchase a bird, once again, that you are willing to make the commitment!

If you are willing to make the commitment, OR you already have a companion, please scroll down and check out the different cages that are for sale! Also feel free to click on any links to teach your pet parrot tricks, how to talk, and how to keep it healthy!

I had a lot of fun writing this, and have decided I will write many more lenses about pet birds! This was my first, but won't be my last :)

I Love All Kinds of Birds!

Picture courtesy of Zyada from www.everystockphoto.comIt all started when I was about 12 years old. My brother asked us if we wanted a bird as a pet. One of his friends was giving it away and needed a home! Well I have loved animals all of my life, so when we decided to take the bird I was excited. Everybody has a cat, or a dog, but a bird, now that is different and exciting. Now mind you, I do own a cat and I love her just as much! Anyway, the bird we had gotten was very tiny. Not like the big birds you are used to like the Blue and Gold Macaw. This bird we had adopted was a Grey Cheeked Parakeet. Slightly bigger than your regual Parakeet! From day one of owning this beautiful bird named Charlie, I fell in love! Now here I am 14 years later and I still own a parakeet and a love bird! Charlie unfortunately passed away. Anyway, I am devoting this blog to the type of cages you might want to buy for your pet bird. Whether it's a parakeet, or a Blue and Gold Macaw, I hope I have showed you many cages to choose from, and have helped you decide was cage is right for your companion!

I like this lens of yours! I think I have never seen a real parrot in my life. I am always seeing doves and Eurasian tree sparrow scattered everywhere here. We used to have love birds, though they all gone now because a wild python entered their cage and ate them. Very sad.

This is an AWESOME post! From the pictures you've posted to the information, I'm seriously loving it. Thank you so much for sharing everything. My African Grey's cage is perfect, from the sounds of it. She HAS to be covered, at night. Personally, I think it's a matter of what you do from the get go. I guess she's just used to being covered, so now every night at 7pm she yells at me "I GO NIGHT NIGHT!".
  • filcaske1 Jan 22, 2012 @ 9:59 pm | delete
Thank you so much! I think you're right about covering up the bird, depends on what you do from the get go and what the bird is used to! That's cute your african grey yells I go night night and knows when its time for bed! They are very smart!
  • fugeecat Jan 22, 2012 @ 2:06 pm | delete
This is a great lens. The pictures of the birds are great and the section on whether or not you really want a pet bird is fantastic. I had a roommate that had a pet bird. She spent very little time with the bird and didn't like to clean the cage. I really don't think she thought through what owning that bird would mean.
  • filcaske1 Jan 22, 2012 @ 9:58 pm | delete
Hello and thank you :) About your friend, yes if you don't spend some quality time with them every day, the bird can become mean and start biting, and even start plucking its own feathers out! If you don't have time to spend with a bird, then either don't get one, or get a pair! Only get a pair if you are ready to accept they'll bond with each other and not you though :)

We used to keep domestic birds as well as outdoor birds like geese and chickens. Haven't had either type for many years and miss them often. Birds add so much joy to a home and farm.
