Join the Fun and Make a Card on the First Saturday in October

Every year, the first Saturday of October is World Card Making Day. Hobbyists, professional paper artists, merchants and manufacturers join the fun to create one or more hand made cards on this day.

According to the World Card Making Day web site, the purpose of the event is to "to connect with fellow card makers both near and far, to applaud the creativity that powers the craft, and to provide an opportunity for card makers to connect and find resources that will empower, inspire, and encourage them in their card making.

To participate, simply locate an event and plan to attend (either online or in your local craft store), or gather some friends and have your own event. If that doesn't appeal, why not make a card and give it to someone just for the fun of it?

If you have never made a hand made card before, this is a good way to learn. There are some tips for beginners on this lens, or see if your local craft store is hosting a Make and Take or a workshop.

Also, if you are hosting an event, or displaying your work online, please feel free to add the link yourself. Use the Link Module near the bottom of this page.

What Card Making Supplies to Use?

Hand Made Greeting Card

Card making and card making supplies can be as simple or elaborate as you want. In the video demonstration, I show a simple child's birthday card. It uses only card stock, scrapbook paper, a hand written or computer generated sentiment and a sticker.

The card shown here is a little more elaborate. It features a stamped image blocked on card stock and scrapbook paper, a double die cut shape, an eyelet and the stamped word, "Always".

Other card making tools could include:
*rubber stamps or acrylic stamps and inks
*die cuts and embossing folders
*ribbons, rick rack and lace
*buttons
*clip art
*paper flowers
*chipboard embellishments
* dried flowers and leaves (cold laminated)
* colored pencils, pens and markers
*brads and eyelets
*beads and rhinestones
*glitter
*and almost anything else that fits the paper size

Adhesives and cutting tools are imperative.

Be Original! Combine Two or More Crafts

When you're doing card making, if you know another craft or art form, why not combine the two? In the picture shown here, I have added small crocheted flowers to the card. The crochet pattern is found at this link: Hand Made Card with Crocheted Flowers.

If you knit, sew, crochet, paint with oils, acrylics or water colors, draw, sketch, bead, do quilling or parchment craft, why not incorporate that talent into your greeting cards?

If you write prose or poetry, consider adding that as well.

The important thing is to have fun and be creative.

I surely do love the little crochet flower embellishments with buttons on a card. Just the other day, I was talking with my neighbor who told me she was making some cards for her friends and family. Such a craft hobby. Love the idea of World Card Making Day.
