Freedom Fest 2010 In Pendleton, SC

The 20th annual Freedom Fest was held July 3, 2010 in Pendleton, SC. Our own Nancy Hellams organized this event with the help of many volunteers from the town.

I had the distinct pleasure of attending Freedom Fest in Pendleton. I got to meet three of my favorite lensmasters, OhMe, Joan4, and Wednesday_Elf. According to OhMe, Nancy Hellams, it was an official Squidoo MeetUp. I had such a great time and I hope you will enjoy my journey to Pendleton here on this page.

Nancy has dedicated herself tirelessly to promoting her town and has written many lenses about Pendleton and all that matters to her there. She is a warm-hearted lady with an infectious smile. I am so glad to have met her in person.

As Nancy would say, "Joan, my older sister", is a warm, light-hearted, delightful woman. She actually put her life in my hands by allowing me to drive her van from her home to Nancy's. I guess we have to add really brave to her accolades.

Pat Austin came to Freedom Fest for a short time. She is a spitfire! She has also won the June contest in the Fresh Wonders for her lens, How To Crochet A Baby Octopus. Congratulations, Pat!

I feel like I have known all three of these ladies forever. If you ever get the chance to visit Pendleton, I highly recommend it. You'll be treated like royalty!

Squidoo Summer Sunshine Award Nominee

For Friends of the Park

This lens was entered in the Squidoo Summer Sunshine Award for Charity challenge. Squidoo chose one lens everyday until August 27, 2010 and awarded the chosen charity with $99 and the author got an additional $99. Earnings from this page will continue to benefit Friends of the Park.

Thank you for your support!

An Official Squidoo MeetUp

With The Tate Sisters

Pendleton Squidoo MeetUp

June 10, 2010 was the Worldwide Squidoo MeetUp Day, but according to Nancy Hellams, our meeting was an official Squidoo MeetUp. At least that is what she told everyone in town as she introduced her sister, Joan, and I. Southern hospitality is embodied in the hearts of the Tate Sisters. This small little South Carolina town oozes southern charm and friendliness. Everyone says hello, they shake your hand when they meet you, and treat you like an old friend. You don't meet any "strangers" in Pendleton.

I can't thank these two ladies enough for showing me such a stupendous time in Pendleton. This was our first face-to-face meeting, but you would never have known it. I was made to feel at home and like a part of the family. Joan and Nancy, you are two very special ladies and I love you. Freedom Fest 2010 will remain in heart and memory forever! Thank you, again!

As you can see in the photo, Squid Lou was also there!

OhMe's Pendleton

Nancy truly loves her home town, her husband, Jim aka Doc, and her family. Here is just a sampling of her writings on these subjects. You can see all her lenses on her bio page.

Joan4 Writes About Pendleton, Too

And Other Things

Joan now lives in Rock Hill, SC, but grew up in Pendleton. It was so much fun and interesting to go down memory lane with her. Here are some of her pages on Pendleton and other areas of interest. Her husband is legally blind, but is still an active golfer. He even has 4 holes-in-one to his credit since he lost his sight. He had 7 before that. See all of Joan's lenses at Squidoo.

Pat Austin

aka Wednesday_Elf

Pat Austin came to live in Pendleton a little over a year ago and says she's glad she did. Pat has decided to move from Pendleton later this year to be closer to her children. I know this had to be a difficult decision for her, but family is family. I know Pendleton will miss her, too. She is a spitfire! You can see it in her eyes and in that brilliant smile of hers.

Here are a few of Pat's lenses. The first is the June award winner in the "Nail That Niche" contest. Way to go, Pat! See all of Pat's lenses here.

Barrett's Playground

At Veteran's Park

Barrett's Playground is part of the Tot Lot at Veteran's Park in Pendleton. You'll find photos of the play area and the entrance. People of Pendleton purchased plaques or bricks to be placed in the walkway and the children created tiles with their hand-prints and the paw prints of their pets. These tiles are part of the wall around the entrance of Tot Lot.

This is for anybody who has not been to Freedom Fest in Pendleton: They serve the best hamburgers (homemade on the spot) and hot dogs and chili (homemade too) and watermelon and brownies and all kinds of cakes--plus, you might get to sit and eat with somebody famous like I did... I got to sit with Nancy and Joan and Beth. It was great meeting you, Beth. I really like your lens. Freedom Fest is a good old home town celebration. I even got to throw a cream pie at the mayor! Fortunately for him, I am not athletic, and the pie went right over his head.

Beth, it was a 'treat' meeting you at Freedom Fest, and seeing Nancy & Joan too. It was definitely a "Party" in Pendleton with the 3 of you around. :). Thanks for the congrats on my "Nail that Niche" challenge award, and for featuring it, and some others, of my Squidoo efforts 'to date'. What a cool snapshot of our Pendleton "Meetup!"

Let me know if you need any more 'crochet' tips, Joan! Keep those 'Pendleton Happenings' going, Nancy. Have a safe 'move', Beth. I may have to return to Pendleton for a visit next year at "Freedom Fest" meet-up time!

We did have fun and yes, we need to make Freedom Fest an official Squidoo tradition! See you all right there next year. I will even buy you a snow cone! Super lens, Beth and a great recap of our weekend. Yes, nominating for Squidoo Sunshine Award. Thank you for coming to see us -- and for being so quickly "one of us". It was as if we had always known each other -- and I think that must be true of Squidoo folks. Kate and I both felt that same way. We all know each other very well through our writing. Meeting in person is, as Kate says, just adding another dimension to an already existing relationship!
