So You're Throwing a Bash...
what now?
Well, your first step is to pick a theme. Your choices are virtually limitless in this department. Most kids will flip over a theme featuring their favourite television character, although you may not want to throw 5 years worth of Thomas the Tank Engine parties.
Themes parties can be as subtle as a theme cake or you could cover every square inch of your space with theme decor. It is completely up to you, but for the sake of argument, if you're going with the theme party thing, why not make it big.

Fiesta!
Olé
For a basic fiesta you should have:
*several serape for adding colour and texture to your room
*pinata filled with anything you can think of. I found pre wrapped chili pepper gummies for a fiesta a few years ago and worked great with the theme.
*Chili peppers of any kind. Check out the links above for the inflatable chili pepper.
*Mexican foods- authentic or otherwise. Bowls of salsa and chips around the room ward off the munchies.
*So far, so obvious right? You would be surprised how well obvious and simple ideas work! Getting too complicated often spoils the effect, and little details you thought would be a smash hit, go unnoticed.
*if you have any fiesta type music, have it playing softly in the background. No need to have the guests battling a mariachi band to be heard.
*Menu: if it a kid party- go with anything they might eat, Soft tacos are safe bets. Skip the jalapenos. Adult parties- here is where you can get creative. Serve Sangria or chicken skewers done on the BBQ with chili spice.

First Birthday Ideas
Entertaining those who could really care less.
Here are a few 1st birthday survival tips:
*keep it small- too many people can turn a good time with a little one into a very, very crabby time.
*take the party outside. Take your child to the park, pack a picnic lunch for the guests.. Little ones can run and play, grown ups can visit and when the tears start, the party is over!
*At 1, the gifts are meaningless. Practical gifts do well for birthday #1. New parents want to shower baby with tons of toys, but honestly, a new spoon could be as well received as a bike.
*Decorating should be simple but should look great in pictures. Try the high chair decorating kit from Perfect Party. Includes banner for the tray and birthday drop cloth.
*This is the big one! As low key as a 1st birthday should be, it should also be meaningful for everyone involved. Parents, take pictures, spend time with your child, relax and enjoy the day. The happier you are, the happier your child will be.

Finding Nemo
Nemo fever has cooled somewhat, but we all know a little person who is still quite attached. "fish are friends, not food" is burned into my mind after hearing it from my own child roughly one zillion times. This Party Pack also comes with a plush shark hat- does it get any cooler than that?! No, it does not.

Treasure Hunt for Little Ones
Like the Pinata, the treasure hunt is old hat for most people, but kids love it! Note: treasure hunts are best done outside as they can get fairly rambuncious.
*For non-reading guests, use pictograms for clues. ie:if the clue is in the maibox, use clip art to depict an envelope and a box. Ask the kids "what kind of box does an envelope go in?" Keep nudging until someone guesses and then on to the next clue!
*If you know the exact guestlist beforehand (no surprise brothers or sisters attending) then you could have a personalized clue at each station. The clue could be sealed in an envelope with one guest's name on it and it is up to that guest to solve the clue.
*Variation: do your treasure hunt at the end of the party and have a loot bag at each station (put a guest's name on each bag to avoid the "It's mine song and dance). Great way to wrap up the party while you wait for parents to pick up their children. By doing this at the end of the party, you also avoid the dreaded "party winddown" when the cake is eaten, the presents opened and the guests are getting tired.
