The city of Pasco is situated in Franklin County which is a part of Washington state. It is one of the zones which makes up the Tri Cities region in the state. The Census of April, 2006, estimated the population in this region to be approximately 46,494 which made it the fast growing city in Washington state.
Pasco is rich in history and heritage sites. The Sacagawea State Park is a tribute to the Lewis and Clark Expedition which had camped here in 1805. This area became a trading station eventually as lumbermen, gold traders and fur trappers frequented it once the Northern Pacific Railways was constructed in the 1880s. Subsequently economic boom ensued.
September 3, 1891 marked the day when Pasco was formally incorporated. Virgil Bogue, an engineer working with the NPR was responsible for the name. It started off as a miniscule railroad town, and by 1941 when the Grand Coulee dam was completed, agriculture, and irrigation brought greater prosperity.
Today, Pasco is famous for being in close proximity to the nuclear power plant at Hanford. Given this and the famed Manhattan Project of the 1950s, the region witnessed a veritable population boom though the phenomenon was largely concentrated in Kennewick and Richland as Pasco remained traditionally agrarian.
The 1990s saw a lot of development on real estate in the region and newly incorporated lands have been witnessing building boom with new housing and shopping complexes fast emerging on the skyline. A " West Pasco" as different from the east or older part of the city has also emerged now.
Climatically Pasco is situated in the rain shadow region of the Cascades mountains and so warm summers and chilly winters are the norm. There is little rain if any and the city is bordered on the south by the wide Columbia river.

The cost of living in a particular real estate area can dramatically affect a decision to purchase a home. It is clear that the cost of living varies diversely across suburbs and neighborhoods, and between cities and towns. Many factors effect living costs, the main one being geographical location - such as rural, urban or metropolitan areas. Wikipedia writes: "A cost-of-living index measures the cost of maintaining a certain standard of living over time. Price indexes, such as the United States Consumer Price Index, use cost-of-living as their conceptual basis."
The cost-of-living index has been developed to determine the minimum costs in North America to maintain a household in terms of sustenance and their income purchasing power. To work out
the likely cost of living in an area you need to consider several factors. For example, in the long-term, what are the likely costs of goods and services in the area? and What are the price indexes? The US Consumer Price Index is a great resource to start with to answer these questions. Next, what are the price changes of goods and services? as well as inflation? The Governments decisions that directly affect the economy will also affect the quality of goods and services available, and so modify the cost-of-living index.
Other factors to look at for cost of living are employment rates, the average salary, rental and housing costs, and of course the health of the real estate market. When considering Pasco real estate, try the website at Salary.com for local cost of living information.
