One benefit of having a US passport card is that it's cheaper than a regular US passport book. So if you're traveling to Cancun, Mexico on a budget, then you can simply apply for a passport card. Processing times would be a non-issue since passport cards take the same amount of time to process as passport books.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative
However, keep in mind that you will need to have a new passport book especially if you are planning of traveling outside the countries/areas covered by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). You can use your passport card to travel to Canada, Bermuda, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Otherwise, you will need a regular passport book to travel.
