Do You Need a US Passport To Travel To the Bahamas? Find Out Now.

With 29 islands and several cays to visit, it's no wonder the Bahamas is one of the top tourist destinations among Americans. If you're planning to visit the Bahamas, it's important that we start with the essential stuff first. That way, all you need to think of when you get there is how to enjoy its beaches to the fullest. In this article, we'll talk about some of the most basic travel questions you have about the Bahamas, especially whether or not you need a passport to visit the Bahamas.

Head To Paradise In The Caribbean

The Bahamas is a part of the group called Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). And as such, to travel to this country from the United States you will need a US passport book, or your passport card. Either of these two documents will suffice. However, unlike some other WHTI sites, your State-issued enhanced driver's license is not accepted in this destination. You are not also required to apply for a visa to travel to the Bahamas. Using an american passport card will enable you to enter the Bahamas. First issued on July 14, 2008, this card is the cheaper and more convenient way of having an official travel document to this destination and the other WHTI member areas. Processing periods for this card is similar to the processing of regular passport books, so make sure you apply for this card way ahead of your travel date. Currently, it takes four to six weeks to complete the routine passport processing, and two to three weeks for the expedited passport option.

Simplicity vs. Flexibility
If you're after flexibility, however, get yourself a US passport book. Unlike the passport card, which you can only use in WHTI areas, you can use your passport book for any destination practically anywhere in the world. It is a little pricier than the card counterpart, but makes up for it with its wide range of uses. If you're a backpacker or a frequent traveler, the passport book is the option for you.

Cruising or Flying? It Matters
Keep in mind that you can only use a passport travel card to and from the Bahamas only if you are traveling by sea or land. If traveling by air, the use of a US passport book is recommended. For your convenience, you can also apply for both types of passports at a discount. You can then use the card for sea and land travel to WHTI areas, and your passport book for international air travel.

What Else Do You Need?
Aside from the passport, the government at the Bahamas may require additional documents for your entry. To confirm whether you need additional documents, checking with their Embassy in the US is recommended. Do this before you leave for the Bahamas.

It's normal to get really excited when you finally arrive at the Bahamas, especially if it's your first time there. However, make sure everything's safe first by registering at the US Embassy or Consulate that's nearest you. They will provide you with travel and safety information when you visit them to register. On top of that, registering also facilitates your communication with them in case of an emergency.

Head To The Tropics
As you will need a pass port to visit the Bahamas, make sure you visit your nearest US passport office immediately. They will provide you with more information on what you need to visit the Bahamas. They will also help you apply for a United States passport so you can visit the Bahamas' finest beaches as soon as possible.
