2011-12 POLL: Which is your favourite make of soft pastels?

Are you as intrigued as me to know which particular make of soft pastels is liked by most pastel artists in 2011? This poll focuses on artist grade soft pastels which are available at the beginning of January 2011.

Sennelier is my favorite...with a few other misc. sticks. Very interesting info. I'll have to get mine out again. It's been awhile. Thanks

Too late for me to vote now, but Unison was the one I would vote for. It is my largest collection. Doesn't have the darks that Terry Ludwig has, but Ludwigs lack dark green and blue. Go figure.

I use just about every brand of soft pastel that there is (see the slide show at http://www.barbararachko.com/studio.html). Unison is the best in terms of the range and vividness of their colors. Plus, they feel so soft and buttery when you use them. No other brand comes close. Judging from Unison's big lead in the poll, this is not a secret.

I love both chalk pastels and oils. I have for a long time. I've been teaching my daughter how to use them. Great lens.

I have a very mixed bag, well box actually, of soft pastels. They have been aquired over many years and are of varying quality and hardness. I do not differentiate between them except for hardness. I always start a painting with my everyday pastels and work it up until very nearly complete. I do fix at regular intervals but at a certain point when nearly complete, I use the brighter colours of the softer Rembrandt pastels which I keep in a separate box. these are not fixed in order to retain the colours, especially the lighter colours. I usually cover the ground with several layers ( fixed as I said, to avoid mixing on the paper). This allows me to build up a very particular textured appearance. This works particularly well with landscapes.
