New Book by Pat Conroy Released August 11, 2009

Pat Conroy has published a new novel, South of Broad.

Pat Conroy is one of my favorite authors and Pat Conroy books are always a great read. I was very excited when I read in this month's Southern Living Magazine that he had published a new book, South of Broad, which is based mainly in Charleston, South Carolina. I love to read his books while on our "Ladies Weekend at Edisto Beach" trip and am really looking forward to reading this one especially. My husband purchased it for my birthday the day it went on sale and it is all I can do to hold off reading it until our trip next month but I am really going to try. Edisto is an island not far from Charleston so it will be a perfect read for the trip.

The Publishing Event of the Season
The one and only Pat Conroy returns, with a big, sprawling novel - his first in fourteen years - that is at once a love letter to Charleston and ode to lifelong friendship.

Publishers Weekly Quote On South of Broad

The following quote was listed on the Press Release that I received from Doubleday Publicity:

"Leopold Bloom King narrates a paean to his hometown and friends in Conroy's first novel in 14 years. In the late '60s and after his brother commits suicide, then 18-year-old Leo befriends a cross-section of the city's inhabitants: scions of Charleston aristocracy; Appalachian orphans; a black football coach's son; and an astonishingly beautiful pair of twins, Sheba and Trevor Poe, who are evading their psychotic father. The story alternates between 1969, the glorious year Leo's coterie stormed Charleston's social, sexual and racial barricades, and 1989, when Sheba, now a movie star, enlists them to find her missing gay brother in AIDS-ravaged San Francisco. Some characters are tagically lost to the riptides of love and obsession, while others emerge from the frothy waters of sentimentality and nostalgia. Fans of Conroy's florid prose and earnest melodramas are in for a treat." Publishers Weekly

South of Broad by Pat Conroy

The long-awaited new novel from Pat Conroy is finally here! As beautiful and moving as his earlier books (The Prince of Tides, Beach Music), South of Broad tells the story of a a tightly knit group of friends whose liaisons ripple across two decades — from 1960s counterculture through the dawn of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. Set against the sumptuous backdrop of Charleston, South Carolina, South of Broad shows Conroy at his finest.

My entry:

Friendship is extremely important to me and I treasure all my friends. I belong to a group of friends called The Steel Magnolias and every fall we load up cars and head to Edisto for a long weekend. This group was officially formed in 1995 with 7 Pendleton ladies. We always have fun together! Through the years our activities have gone from shopping and sightseeing to being perfectly satisfied to curl up with a good book. Several of us will be reading Pat Conroy's South of Broad this time and I can't wait to hear the discussions that will take place. Good friends, beautiful South Carolina coast and a great book - it just doesn't get much better than that!
