A Childhood Scrapbook
It's been about twenty years since I last put on this old windbreaker, which I wore into my late teens in the late 1980s. I was never a Girl Scout, but I collected patches wherever my family travelled. So this jacket has a lot of memories sewn onto it. I took it with my to my undergraduate college interview as a conversation piece.
I'd like to share with you my "travel threads" -- a scrapbook of places I've visited and things I care about, with anecdotes, pictures and video clips, and recommended links and books on each topic. Since I have so many patches, I've grouped them on different lenses by theme.

Travel Threads: Space

My father was an aerospace engineer and my grandmother a planetarium director. So I've always had a personal relationship with the space program -- never as my career, but as something I followed avidly, the way children of military families are more...

Travel Threads: American West

Many summers, we'd camp for two weeks in the wilderness of Ontario north of New York State. I loved Canada. As a kid, I thought I needed a patch for each trip, and I agonzied over selecting the most interesting shape or most appropriate picture. Th...

Travel Picture Bingo by Imaginetics
This helped keep me busy on long drives, along with various toys. Of course, we didn't have DVDs or video games back then.

Eureka! Adventure Backpacking Tents Timberline 4 New
Awwww. This is the one-person-plus-lots-of-gear tent that I used for a good 20 years in snow, sun, rain and hail. Unless they've changed the floor you'll need a tarp or waterproof mat to keep moisture from wicking through the bottom. The top bends under a heavy load of snow but will pop back into shape. There's probably better-engineered tents now, as I got it in '83, but I can vouch for its dependability.

MSR Alpine Teapot
Essential part of my backpacking kit. Those freeze-dried meals use hot water poured right into the bag, so this may be the only pot you need.
