During the summer months there is nothing we like more than to get outside! Patios are a way to bring the comforts of the indoors out! You can make a patio in the front of your home or tuck it away in your back yard. Your patio could be the private getaway you have always dreamed of. There are a few essentials in planning your patio decorating that will be reviewed in this lens.

Patio Lights

Lighting is an essential element of patio decoration. Of course its function is to provide necessary lighting to see at night, but it also can be used to create atmosphere. Soft lighting can create a warm and inviting effect. Colorful lights invite playfulness. Colored lights placed in the right way can be intriguing.
There are such a wide variety of ways to light your patio too. You can have lights actually in the flooring amongst your patio stones. You can hang lights on string from tree to tree or around your gazebo. With the invention of solar lighting there is no limit to the possibilities of lighting your deck or patio.

I didn't realize there were so many choices in solar lighting. We use our lanai year round here, so this would definitely save on the electric bill and they are much more attractive too.

We use the "tube lights"--the LED lights encased in a clear, flexible plastic tube about 12 feet long. Our patio is roofed, and we run them the length of the roof. Just enough light to see and socialize at night, but never glaring. I'd think they'd also be pretty on the ground, woven in and out between plants or shrubbery--but those would need to be safe for outdoor use

Patio Plants

A major component of a [patio is to decorate it with your favorite plants. You will need to pick out plants depending on the lighting situation on your patio, You will also have to take in consideration space. You don't want a plant that is too tall or too wide. Plants in a variety of colorful containers bring a warmth to the area. When thinking about plants you will have to choose according to the function of your patio. Is it for a informal gathering? Is a patio for parties? You want to think about the positions of plants. Is it best to plant them in gardens? Is it better to have them in containers so they can be moved around easier?
Remember that plants are a commitment so don't purchase more plants that you can take care of. If you are an avid gardener then this picture below might illustrate the types of plants you will want in or around your patio. This person put in a pergola to grow plants on. Pergolas are great for adding privacy to a patio. If you have any woodworking skills then I have no doubt you can pick up the materials and make one yourself!

If you are not fortunate enough to have someone build a pergola for you, then you can purchase one. There are several to choose from.
