Tree Roses Add Structure and Height To Your Garden

Tree Roses come in a wide variety of forms and colors. I've recently started growing this lovely type of rose and I was surprised to discover that many of my rose favorites are available in tree form: Peace, Chrysler Imperial, and Mister Lincoln to name a few.

Try a Tree Rose or two to give height to a border planting, add them to a corner collection, plant them among your other roses for some height interest, or use them in containers to flank an entrance or patio.

Patio Tree Roses are more recent innovations, unlike the tall, spindly stems of regular Tree Roses which require staking and coddling (I was turned off by these for years). The sturdy, thick-stemmed Patio Tree Roses can be planted in tubs or containers and stored in protected locations in sub-zero winter areas. They can be planted directly in the ground in mild-winter areas. Try them out and you will be a convert like me! Mr. Lincoln patio tree rose pictured above.

Patio Tree Rose - Combo of Peace & Chrysler Imperial

This stunning head turner is the result of combining my favorite yellow rose with pink edging (the famous "Peace" rose) and the classic red exhibition rose, "Chrysler Imperial" into a patio tree rose. What a classy combo! This tree rose grows to 36" high on a sturdy 20" thick stem. Grows well in the ground or in a container. I have a pair of these in pots flanking our front door. Easy to grow just ensure they get enough sunlight - at least 6 hours a day to thrive.

Watering Tips for Patio Tree Roses

Follow These Guidelines for Healthy Roses

Water deeply, but infrequently. This will encourage strong root growth.

Water in the morning to help prevent black spot and mildew.

Avoid wetting the plant's leaves during regular watering, which can spread disease.

However, about once a week, give your rose a good shower or mist with a spray nozzle hose attachment. This not only adds water and humidity, it clears the leaves of dust, dirt and harmful insects.

Roses should receive 1 to 2 inches of water each week.

Container roses will need to be watered frequently because water evaporates more quickly from plants above ground. Initially, water the plant well to get it firmly established.

During growth cycles, stick a finger in the soil to check for moisture. If your finger comes out literally dry, it's time to add water. Muddy soil means the plant is getting too much water. Moist soil should be an indicator that the water amount is just about right.

Mulch (2 to 3 inches around a bush) to help retain moisture from watering and reduce future watering needs. Mulching also helps keep the soil cool and helps control weeds.

I love the purple and the pink ones! I love roses, despite what Bret Michaels sings about "every rose has its thorn" ... roses are truly beautiful.
