With advancements in technology on the rise, many new types of outdoor patio or aluminum umbrellas have taken the place of the traditional style market/wood umbrella due to their strength and resilience in the outdoor elements. Even if a wood type umbrella has been manufactured with one piece pole and has strong rib arms and sealed with many layers of varnish and protective sealant, it may not stand the test of time compared to the new style aluminum umbrellas on the market, strictly due to the flexibility in the aluminum materials. 

In recent years however, huge strides have been made in regards to types of materials and products used with wood to make the market style umbrella a much stronger shade structure. Some manufacturers are adding extra options like steel poles and shafts that are inserted internally into the wood pole to give added strength from wind gusts and inclement weather challenges caused by patrons abusing the umbrellas.
